Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross
Post-Conciliar Models Of Sin And Reconciliation: Towards A Contemporary Paradigm, James Cross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The central proposal of this dissertation is that now, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), official Roman Catholic teaching on sin and sacramental reconciliation is not, but ought to be, based upon a contemporary paradigm of sin and reconciliation--i.e. a paradigm which is concordant with, and adequate in light of, the teachings and goals of this Council. According to the author, an existing "liturgical-narrational" model of sin and reconciliation ought to be elevated to the status of such a paradigm or supermodel.
The author arrives at this conclusion after examining two critical post-Conciliar documents--the revised Rite of …

Development Of A Biochemical Probe For Arsenate Respiring Bacteria Using Bacillus Selenitireducens Strain Mls10, Mirunalni Thangavelu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To date, eighteen phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes have been found to utilize arsenic as the terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration, converting arsenate into the more toxic and mobile arsenite. This process can lead to ground water contamination, making it imperative to detect in situ, active arsenate-respiring prokaryotes.
A biochemical probe that targets the catalytic subunit (ArrA) of the respiratory arsenate reductase (Arr) from Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS10 was developed. Polyclonal antibodies were raised against a fifteen amino acids long highly conserved sequence at the C-terminus of ArrA. Highly specific antibodies obtained by affinity purification using the synthesized ArrA polypeptide, reacted …

Abstract
Background
Minocycline, a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic, is an effective neuroprotective agent in animal models of cerebral ischemia when given in high doses intraperitoneally. The aim of this study was to determine if minocycline was effective at reducing infarct size in a Temporary Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion model (TMCAO) when given at lower intravenous (IV) doses that correspond to human clinical exposure regimens.
Methods
Rats underwent 90 minutes of TMCAO. Minocycline or saline placebo was administered IV starting at 4, 5, or 6 hours post TMCAO. Infarct volume and neurofunctional tests were carried out at 24 hr after TMCAO using …

A Study Of The Principle Of Subsidiarity In Catholic Social Thought: Implications For Social Justice And Civil Society In Nigeria, Simeon Iber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined the centrality of the principle of subsidiarity in Catholic social teaching, in bringing about social and moral reconstruction of society and in particular the Nigerian social context. The origin of this principle has been traced to the natural human inclination to build a healthy relationship between the individual and society, such that, the society will provide generous help and support to individuals to help themselves. Subsidiarity is a way of organizing individuals and social groups in community to help each other in pursuing their interests with common goals, the ultimate purpose being to assist one another and …
The Later Heidegger And Contemporary Theology Of God, Daniel Martino
The Later Heidegger And Contemporary Theology Of God, Daniel Martino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Martin Heidegger was a central figure in 20th century Western philosophy. In evaluating his work from the perspective of the early 21st century it is clear that his influence crossed disciplinary lines. This work aims to address one area where Heidegger's thinking has had tremendous impact -- theology. Specifically, Heidegger's later writings are selectively examined in order to determine the bearing they have on the issue of God.
The route to God, in a strict confessional sense, is neither easy nor direct in the Heideggerian corpus. As a result, the first methodological tack used throughout this study establishes Heidegger's abiding …
Assessment Of Constructs Related To Childhood Aggression, Susan B. Mclaughlin
Assessment Of Constructs Related To Childhood Aggression, Susan B. Mclaughlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study provides empirical support for the comprehensive theoretical model of aggression proposed by Meloy (2001) by examining characteristics of children who have a longstanding history of aggression across home and educational settings. The theoretical model first proposed by Meloy (2001) found attachment, anxiety, and attention difficulties in adults who evidenced severe aggression problems. The current study clarified how the adult model applies to children. That is, this study examined how attachment, anxiety, and attention are related to the overall functioning of children requiring treatment for aggression. Results are discussed in terms of child development issues, treatment selection, and intervention …
Evaluating Human Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Mg-63 Cells On Vitoss, Chronos Granulat And Chronos For Use In Bone Tissue Engineering, Hina Qidwai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The delivery of human adult mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSC) using bone void fillers is a novel approach for use in bone tissue engineering. The evaluation of hAMSC and osteoblast-like MG-63 cell activity on three β-tricalcium phosphate-based bone void fillers (Vitoss, ChronOS Granulat and ChronOS) has not been carried out. Human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63 cells), as well as hAMSCs, readily seed over 90% of the available biomaterials under static culture conditions, and the attached cells proliferate to extensively cover the biomaterials as seen by DAPI staining and LIVE/DEAD viability staining. The attached cells are over 90% viable after 7 days in …

Development, Research And Validation Of Environmental Speciation Methods; And Evaluation By Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry In Mercury And Chromium Speciation Analysis, G. M. Mizanur Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The toxicity of an element depends upon its chemical forms, which also gives vital information for samples and their relevance. A sequential extraction method for mercury speciation in soil and sediments was established based on the mobility and toxicity of different mercury species and was proposed as a draft US EPA Method 3200. In order to finalize the method, an interlaboratory validation study was performed, and the final results verified the applicability of the method. Some of the widely used mercury speciation methods were evaluated during this study and the results were compared with those obtained from EPA draft Method …
Understanding The Organ Music Of Olivier Messiaen: Optical Illusions Versus Aural Realities, Krista Shinew
Understanding The Organ Music Of Olivier Messiaen: Optical Illusions Versus Aural Realities, Krista Shinew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I examine the organ music of Olivier Messiaen both from the viewpoint of a theorist and as an organist. I assert that not only his influences, but also his in-depth understandings of the mutations stops of the organ and what pitches are produced by using these stops inform Messiaen's music. Furthermore, the organ music requires more than mere visual inspection, but must be aurally experienced because of the registration requirements placed in the score by Messiaen. The utilization of mutations often does not produce concert pitch, but other pitches absent in the score. To demonstrate this I …
The Special Public Purpose Forum And Endorsement Relationships: New Extensions Of Government Speech, Mary Jean Dolan
The Special Public Purpose Forum And Endorsement Relationships: New Extensions Of Government Speech, Mary Jean Dolan
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The public and private sectors partner in a growing number of projects with expressive dimensions, as governments follow marketing trends and also leverage their resources to produce cultural programs. This creates ever more complex First Amendment issues because such joint enterprises exist at the intersection of two overlapping, but contradictory, paradigms: the limited public forum and government speech. Under the limited public forum test, government ostensibly may set reasonable content limitations when it opens up property and programs to private speakers, so long as its selections are viewpoint neutral. There is no clear line between viewpoint and content, however, and …

Communication Of Where An Event Occurred By A Gorilla (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla), Megan L. Hoffman
Modern Psychological Studies
Episodic-like memory for the "where" component of unique events was examined in an adult gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). The gorilla witnessed a unique event, performed by an experimenter (e.g. watching an experimenter blow bubbles) at one of three locations surrounding his enclosure. After a 4 to 17 minute retention interval, a tester presented the gorilla with photographs of the three locations, which were mounted on wooden cards, and asked the gorilla where the event had occurred. The gorilla communicated his choice by handing a card to the tester and was rewarded if correct. The gorilla was significantly above chance at …
Permafrost Thaw Accelerates In Boreal Peatlands During Late-20th Century Climate Warming, Philip Camil
Permafrost Thaw Accelerates In Boreal Peatlands During Late-20th Century Climate Warming, Philip Camil
Biology Faculty Work
Permafrost covers 25% of the land surface in the northern hemisphere, where mean annual ground temperature is less than 0◦C. A 1.4–5.8 ◦C warming by 2100 will likely change the sign of mean annual air and ground temperatures over much of the zones of sporadic and discontinuous permafrost in the northern hemisphere, causing widespread permafrost thaw. In this study, I examined rates of discontinuous permafrost thaw in the boreal peatlands of northern Manitoba, Canada, using a combination of tree-ring analyses to document thaw rates from 1941–1991 and direct measurements of permanent benchmarks established in 1995 and resurveyed in 2002. I …
Enhancement Of Cognitive And Electrophysiological Measures Of Hippocampal Functioning In Rats By A Low, But Not High, Dose Of Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (Dheas), David M. Diamond
Psychology Faculty Publications
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) is a steroid hornone that is synthesized, de novo, in the brain. Endogenous DHEAS levels correlate with the quality of mental and physical health, where the highest levels of DHEAS occur in healthy young adults and reduced levels of DHEAS are found with advanced age, disease, or extreme stress. DHEAS supplementation, therefore, may serve as a therapeutic agent against a broad range of maladies. This paper summarizes laboratory findings on dose-response relationships between DHEAS and cognitive and electrophysiological measures of hippocampal functioning. It was found that a low, but not a high, dose of DHEAS enhanced hippocampal …

The Song Sparrow And The Child: Claims Of Science And Humanity, Joseph Vining
The Song Sparrow And The Child: Claims Of Science And Humanity, Joseph Vining
Books
For centuries public claims on behalf of science have been made about our nature and the nature of the world as a whole. Over the twentieth century such claims on behalf of science have grown deeper and stronger. More and more they are total claims, cosmological in the largest sense, and they have evoked opposition equally deep and strong.
There is the scientist in all of us. There is, too, the lawyer and law in all of us, which we realize the moment we serve as a witness or citizen juror. This book explores what the legal mind and ear …
Story-List-Sanction: A Cross-Cultural Strategy Of Ancient Persuasion, James W. Watts
Story-List-Sanction: A Cross-Cultural Strategy Of Ancient Persuasion, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
Persuasion motivated the creation of many ancient Near Eastern texts. Persuasion was not limited to particular genres of discourse and literature but was frequently a stimulus leading authors to combine gemes to create more persuasive forms. In this process, the rhetorical capacities of many different kinds of liiterature were harnessed for overtly persuasive purposes. One such rhetorical strategy combined three kinds of materials-stories, lists and sanctions-to influence its audience's ideas and behaviors. It shaped the form and content of texts from a wide variety of periods and cultures in the ancient Near East and eastern Mediterranean, including the foundational scriptures …

2003-2004 Survey Of International Law In The Second : Recognition Of Foreign Judgments, P. C. Kulp
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
In Films By Jove, Inc. v. Berov, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York recognized the sovereignty and independence of the United States judiciary in the international arena. In its decision, the Court acknowledged the pervasive corruption in the Russian legal system and revealed an interest in protecting United States business interests. In disregarding the decision of the High Arbitrazh Court of the Russian Federation, Russia's court of last resort, the Court discounted international principles of comity. In doing so, the Court conveyed intolerance for corruption. Future opinions will therefore rely on this decision in …

The Legal Implications Of Living With Hiv/Aids In A Developing Country: The Afican Story, Florence Shu-Acquaye
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
This article looks at customary and statutory laws, such as polygamy, widow inheritance, and other cultural practices that have contributed to the entrenchment of the disease in Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. 7 It also provides a discussion of the African dilemma with recommendations. The article further looks at how weak human rights laws are and how the stigmatization associated with HIV/AIDS has contributed to the multi-faceted and complex nature of this disease in Africa. Additionally, it evaluates the possibility of changing or amending some of the related existing laws by offering a checklist for policy makers and legislators. Finally, the …

Optimal Beaver Population Management Using Reduced Order Distributed Parameter Model And Single Network Adaptive Critics, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Using a distributed parameter model for beaver population that accounts for their spatial and temporal behavior, an optimal control for a desired distribution of the animals is presented. Optimal solutions are obtained through a "single network adaptive critic" (SNAC) neural network architecture. The objective of this research is to design an "optimal" beaver harvesting scheme for a region of interest.
