"[N]Ot A Story To Pass On": Constructing Mothers Who Kill, Susan Ayres Jan 2004

"[N]Ot A Story To Pass On": Constructing Mothers Who Kill, Susan Ayres

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Society is horrified and shocked when mothers kill their children. While this reaction may be justified, the reasons behind infanticide are never fully explored. Motherhood has very specific definitions in our society which makes it difficult to understand the motivations behind infanticide. Social institutions, such as the legal system and the media, are responsible for constructing motherhood in such a way that we view mothers who kill their children as simply insane and deficient. This article asserts another possible viewpoint regarding infanticide. Instead of specularizing women, the author urges people to view mothers who kill their children within the context …

Control Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Γ2 Stability And Activity By Sumoylation, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jan 2004

Control Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Γ2 Stability And Activity By Sumoylation, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Objective: To determine whether small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO)ylation of lysine 107 plays a role in regulating the activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). Research Methods and Procedures: Transient expression of wild-type and K107R-PPARγ2 in the NIH 3T3 fibroblast cell line was carried out in conjunction with half-life studies, luciferase activity assays, and indirect immunofluorescence localization studies. Additional in vitro analysis was carried out using recombinant SUMOylation pathway proteins along with in vitro transcribed and translated wild-type or K107R-PPARγ2 to examine the SUMO-1 modification state of wild-type and SUMO-deficient K107R-PPARγ2. Results: While examining PPARγ2 for potential ubiquitylation sites, we identified …

The Effects Of Gestational Perchlorate Exposure On Development And Behavior In Rats, Sally Ann Hopper Jan 2004

The Effects Of Gestational Perchlorate Exposure On Development And Behavior In Rats, Sally Ann Hopper

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Pregnant Long Evans rats were exposed to ammonioum perchlorate in their drinking water at doses of 0.8 mg/kg-day and 8.7 mg/kg-day (or at concentrations of 5.0 mg/L perchlorate and 50.0 mg/L perchlorate) from GD 7-GD 21. The offspring were observed for developmental landmarks and tested in a battery of behavior trials. Dams exposed at the 5.0 mg/kg-day perchlorate exhibited delayed or deficient responses in the number of pups per dam, pinna unfolding, negative geotaxis, startle response IP on PND 61, figure 8 maze on PND 21, and a more reactive tactile startle response on PND 21. Pups exposed at the …

Pottery And Mobility: A Functional Analysis Of Intermountain Brownware, Britt J Betenson Jan 2004

Pottery And Mobility: A Functional Analysis Of Intermountain Brownware, Britt J Betenson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Intermountain Brownware, is a late prehistoric ceramic type made by mobile hunter-gatherers that is found throughout southern Nevada, western Utah and northern Arizona. Most hunter-gather groups around the world are not pottery producers. Through interdisciplinary analysis, I examine the physical and morphological characteristics to understand the amount of labor invested in the construction and production of Intermountain Brownware. I then evaluate these results amongst environmental, historical, ethnological, and archaeological data to conclude that Intermountain Brownware possesses lower porosity, and is thinner and stronger than commonly reported. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is performed to empirically characterize food residues remaining in the …

Effect Of Dietary Phosphorus On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows: Milk Production And Cow Health, H. Lopez, F. D. Kanitz, V. R. Moreira, M. C. Wiltbank, L. D. Satter Jan 2004

Effect Of Dietary Phosphorus On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows: Milk Production And Cow Health, H. Lopez, F. D. Kanitz, V. R. Moreira, M. C. Wiltbank, L. D. Satter

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to measure cow response to feeding of two dietary concentrations of P, one of which was close to recent National Research Council requirements, and the other of which was well in excess of the requirement. Diets containing 0.37 or 0.57% P (dry basis) were fed to Holstein cows for the first 165 d of lactation, and occasionally longer until cows were confirmed pregnant approximately 60 d after insemination. At calving, cows were randomly assigned to experimental diets. The number of cows completing a minimum of 165 d of lactation was 123 for the 0.37 …

Reproductive Performance Of Dairy Cows Fed Two Concentrations Of Phosphorus, H. Lopez, F. D. Kanitz, V. R. Moreira, L. D. Satter, M. C. Wiltbank Jan 2004

Reproductive Performance Of Dairy Cows Fed Two Concentrations Of Phosphorus, H. Lopez, F. D. Kanitz, V. R. Moreira, L. D. Satter, M. C. Wiltbank

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary P concentrations of 0.37 (recommended) or 0.57% (excess; dry matter basis) on reproductive performance. At calving, Holstein cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments (n = 134 for 0.37% P and n = 133 for 0.57% P). Cows were fitted with a radiotelemetric transmitter (50 d in milk [DIM]) to record mounting activity during estrus and bred to natural estrus from 50 to 100 DIM, then to synchronized estrus (Ovsynch protocol) after 100 DIM. Weekly ultrasonography was performed from 50 DIM until pregnancy was diagnosed …

Comparison Of Conventional Linted Cottonseed And Mechanically Delinted Cottonseed In Diets For Dairy Cows, V. R. Moreira, L. D. Satter, B. Harding Jan 2004

Comparison Of Conventional Linted Cottonseed And Mechanically Delinted Cottonseed In Diets For Dairy Cows, V. R. Moreira, L. D. Satter, B. Harding

Faculty Publications

Performance of lactating dairy cows fed diets containing either mechanically delinted whole cottonseed (DWCS; 3.7% lint) or linted whole cottonseed (LWCS; 11.7% lint) was measured. Forty primiparous (86 ± 39 d in milk) and 40 multiparous (88 ± 30 d in milk) cows were fed a total mixed ration containing 13% (dry matter basis) DWCS or LWCS in two blocks of 112 d (n = 53 and 27, respectively). Other total mixed ration ingredients (dry matter basis) were corn silage (28.1%), alfalfa silage (23%), high moisture shelled corn (27.8%), soybean meal (1.8%), expeller soybean meal (1.8%), blood meal (2%), and …
