Northern Lacandon Maya Medicinal Plant Use In The Communities Of Lacanja Chan Sayab And Nahá Chiapas, Mexico, Ryan A. Kashanipour, R. Jon Mcgee Jan 2004

Northern Lacandon Maya Medicinal Plant Use In The Communities Of Lacanja Chan Sayab And Nahá Chiapas, Mexico, Ryan A. Kashanipour, R. Jon Mcgee

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The Lacandon Maya are rainforest farmers who inhabit the tropical jungles of southern Mexico and Guatemala. They number approximately 700 individuals and practice a traditional system of agriculture that incorporates introduced plants and the native flora of their environment. In this essay, we discuss a largely neglected aspect of Lacandon ethnomedicine. Our results include 47 medicinal plants used by the several Northern Lacandon living in the communities of Naha’ and Lacanja Chan Sayab. The plants are cultivated in three zones (house gardens, milpas, and secondary milpas) and wild plants are collected from the jungle. This method of healing exists amid …

Who Is An Environmentalist? The Polysemy Of Environmentalist Terms And Correlated Environmental Actions, Danielle Tesch, Willett Kempton Jan 2004

Who Is An Environmentalist? The Polysemy Of Environmentalist Terms And Correlated Environmental Actions, Danielle Tesch, Willett Kempton

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Conducting and interpreting an interview is more problematic when informants use a word that has multiple meanings and interpretations. In this case, the problematic word, “environmentalist,” labeled several socially-defined identities that were central to the study. The analysis is based on interviews with 156 members of 20 diverse environmental groups (and two comparison groups) in the Eastern United States, including their views on environmentalists, their history with the movement, their self-identification as an environmentalist, and their environmental actions. From these data, principles of classification and naming are used to distinguish the multiple meanings of the identity “environmentalist.” We found that …

Response Tier Development Document Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan, Martha Turner, Lisa O'Donnell Jan 2004

Response Tier Development Document Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan, Martha Turner, Lisa O'Donnell

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

The Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan describes when and how endangered salamanders would be protected or rescued should a catastrophic spill occur in the Barton Spring watershed. The best response to any particular spill depends on a variety of factors, thus an effective spill response plan requires a method to determine thresholds that will elicit each tier of salamander rescue efforts. This plan focuses primarily on developing response tiers for gasoline, since it is considered to be the most common problematic spilled material with high toxicity and the potential for very large spills., The method developed for gasoline is …

Water-Budget Analysis Of Medina And Diversion Lakes And The Medina/Diversion Lake System, With Estimated Recharge To Edwards Aquifer, San Antonio, Texas Scientific Investigations Report 2004-5209, Lisa D. Miller, Richard N. Slattery

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

The purpose of this study was to estimate groundwater outflow (recharge) from the Medina Lake/Diversion Lake system through the calculation of water budgets over a wide range of lake stages. Results of the study indicate that average monthly losses from the Medina Lake/Diversion Lake system are about 56 percent of the monthly recharge computed by previously used USGS methods. The study was completed in December 2004 by the United States Geological Survey, San Antonio, Texas. -- Authors Open Access - Permission by Publisher Edwards Aquifer Authority Collection See Extended description for more information.

Corporate Tax Avoidance, David A. Weisbach Jan 2004

Corporate Tax Avoidance, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This essay analyzes the problem of corporate tax avoidance. It shows how the marginal efficiency cost of funds and optimal elasticity of taxable income measures can be used to analyze the problem and determine the proper scope of allowable tax planning. It then analyzes the optimal form of tax laws addressing shelters, such as whether the law should use more detailed rules or broad standards.

Walter J. Ong, S.J.: A Retrospective, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Communication Research Trends usually charts current communication research, introducing its readers to recent developments across the range of inquiry into communication. This issue, however, takes a different tack, looking back on the writings of Walter J. Ong, S.J., who died at the age of 90 in August 2003. Ong spent his scholarly career at Saint Louis University, where he served as University Professor of Humanities, the William E. Haren Professor of English, and Professor of Humanities in Psychiatry at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Skepticism And Freedom: The Intellectual Foundations Of Our Constitutional Order, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2004

Skepticism And Freedom: The Intellectual Foundations Of Our Constitutional Order, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

It is my great pleasure to have been invited by the Templeton Foundation to give this lecture dedicated to the articulation of the sound principles of constitutional law. Understanding the role of constitutional theory has become one of the most contentious problems of our times, as partisans on both sides of the political aisle seek to gain the rhetorical advantage in short-term political disputes by hurling epithets-which often relate to the question of judicial restraint- against the judicial nominees and judicial philosophy of the other side. I have no personal or political stake in the outcome of these disputes. But …

What Does The Public Get? Experimental Use And The Patent Bargain, Katherine J. Strandburg Jan 2004

What Does The Public Get? Experimental Use And The Patent Bargain, Katherine J. Strandburg

Faculty Articles

This article deals with the increasing tension between the tradition of protecting commercially valuable inventions through patenting and the need for a robust public domain of freely available technical information as a springboard for further research. The "experimental use exemption," permitting some unauthorized research uses of patented inventions, might be used to relieve some of this tension. However, the scope of the research exemption has been shrunk so far by recent Federal Circuit opinions that even basic university research is not excused from infringement liability. This article returns to the first principles of patent law - the incentives to invent …

Reflections On The Historical Origins Of Economic Structure Of The Law Merchant, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2004

Reflections On The Historical Origins Of Economic Structure Of The Law Merchant, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this short essay is to make some introductory remarks to frame the debate about the historical evolution and economic structure of the Law Merchant. For these purposes the capitalization of the phrase should not mislead, for by the Law Merchant I mean nothing more pretentious than the commercial law rules-contractual, customary, and statutory-that govern transactions among merchants. It includes the rules governing sale, credit, insurance, transportation, and, probably, partnership. In approaching so salient a topic, it comes as something of a shock to realize that the first order of business in this venerable area is the extensive …

In Defense Of The "Old" Public Health: The Legal Framework For The Regulation Of Public Health, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2004

In Defense Of The "Old" Public Health: The Legal Framework For The Regulation Of Public Health, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The traditional forms of public health law were directed largely toward communicable diseases and other externalities, such as pollution, with negative health impacts. The more modern view treats any health issue as one of public health so long as it affects large numbers of individuals, and this definition includes such matters as obesity and diabetes. This paper examines the historical and constitutional evolution of the public health principle as it moved from the narrower to the broader conception. It then argues that the narrower principle better defines the appropriate scope of coercive government intervention than the broader definition, which could …

Although it is commonly assumed that closely related animals are similar in body size, the degree of similarity has not been examined across the taxonomic hierarchy. Moreover, little is known about the variation or consistency of body size patterns across geographic space or evolutionary time. Here, we draw from a data set of terrestrial, nonvolant mammals to quantify and compare patterns across the body size spectrum, the taxonomic hierarchy, continental space, and evolutionary time. We employ a variety of statistical techniques including “sib-sib” regression, phylogenetic autocorrelation, and nested ANOVA. We find an extremely high resemblance (heritability) of size among congeneric …

Online Reverse Auctions: An Overview, Ching-Chung Kuo, Pamela Rogers, Richard E. White Jan 2004

Online Reverse Auctions: An Overview, Ching-Chung Kuo, Pamela Rogers, Richard E. White

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) is the fastest growing area in the U.S. economy with electronic procurement (e-procurement) being a major component, and online reverse auctions (ORAs) have emerged as a key e-procurement tool. Since the mid-1990s, ORAs have been gaining in popularity because of their potentially significant positive impact on the profitability of both the buyers and the sellers. Much has been written about the new purchasing paradigm and numerous stories have been reported recently. This paper is aimed at providing a critical review of ORAs by examining their historical developments, different forms, advantages, and disadvantages. In addition, 10 important factors …
