All For One And One For All: Designing Web-Based Courses For Students Based Upon Individual Learning Styles, Michael K. Barbour, Morris Cooze

Education Faculty Publications

As e-learning begins to proliferate into secondary schools and is opened up to learners of all abilities, it is important that the effects different learning styles have upon how online instruction is provided are taken into consideration. In this study, students from a secondary-level business education class completed a learning styles inventory to determine their strengths in the traditional learning styles and in Gardner’s intelligences. A variety of web-based instructional methods were utilized throughout the school year and the students’ overall performance in the course was monitored.

We have investigated the detection, confirmation, and metabolism of the beta-adrenergic agonist ractopamine administered as Paylean to the horse. A Testing Components Corporation enzyme-linked imunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for ractopamine displayed linear response between 1.0 and 100 ng/ml, with an 1-50 of 10 ng/ml, and an effective screening limit of detection of 50 ng/mL. The kit was readily able to detect ractopamine equivalents in unhydrolyzed urine up to 24 h following a 300-mg oral dose. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) confirmation comprised glucuronidase treatment, solid-phase extraction, and trimethylsilyl derivatization, with selected-ion monitoring of ractopamine-tris(trimethylsilane) (TMS) m/z 267, 250, 179, and 502 …

Hierarchies Of Harm In Canadian Criminal Law: The Marijuana Trilogy And The Forcible “Correction” Of Children, Janine Benedet Jan 2004

Hierarchies Of Harm In Canadian Criminal Law: The Marijuana Trilogy And The Forcible “Correction” Of Children, Janine Benedet

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper examines the Supreme Court of Canada’s use of the concept of “harm” in its decisions in R. v. Malmo-Levine, which upholds the criminal prohibition on marijuana possession, and Canadian Foundation for Children, Youth and the Law v. Canada (Attorney General), which upholds the reasonable correction defense for parents and teachers charged with assaults against children in their care. The author argues that these decisions employ contradictory characterizations of the role of harm in determining the proper scope of the criminal law. Although the majority in Malmo-Levine cites protecting vulnerable groups from harm as a valid purpose of the …

R. V. Powley: Building A Foundation For The Constitutional Recognition Of Métis Aboriginal Rights, Lori Sterling, Peter Lemmond Jan 2004

R. V. Powley: Building A Foundation For The Constitutional Recognition Of Métis Aboriginal Rights, Lori Sterling, Peter Lemmond

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In R. v. Powley, the Supreme Court has provided a firm foundation upon which to build a Métis section 35 Aboriginal rights jurisprudence. This paper outlines the essential elements of the decision, emphasizing the fact that the Powley test modifies the Van der Peet approach to Aboriginal rights in one crucial respect: Instead of the Aboriginal community having to come into existence at or near the point of European contact, the Métis community may come into existence at a later date but before effective European control. The paper discusses other approaches to Métis aboriginal rights that were raised before the …

Institutional Boundaries And Judicial Review: Some Thoughts On How The Court Is Going About Its Business: Desperately Seeking Coherence, Danielle Pinard Jan 2004

Institutional Boundaries And Judicial Review: Some Thoughts On How The Court Is Going About Its Business: Desperately Seeking Coherence, Danielle Pinard

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper addresses the issue of the legitimacy of judicial review from a methodological perspective. It argues that unpredictability of approach is a very serious and dangerous form of judicial activism. It analyses an ambivalent judicial attitude to facts, and the confusion that exists between rules and provisions on the one hand, and interpretation and remedies on the other. It pleads in favour of greater conceptual consistency in the way the Supreme Court of Canada handles methodological issues.

Judges And Politics: An Essay From Canada, Allan C. Hutchinson Jan 2004

Judges And Politics: An Essay From Canada, Allan C. Hutchinson

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper addresses the central jurisprudential issue of the connection between judges’ political commitments and adjudication. Concentrating on the contested question of whether judges are and can ever not be “activist”, it argues that adjudication is inevitably and unavoidably political in nature: there is simply no other way for judges to fulfill their responsibilities other than by resort to basic political values. By examining the recent decision of the SCC in Doucet-Boudreau, the paper offers a very different account of how judges can meet constitutional expectations in contemporary Canada.

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Amitraz (N′-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-N-[[(2,4-dimethylphenyl)imino] methyl]-N-methyl-methanimidamide) is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used in veterinary medicine primarily as a scabicide- or acaricide-type insecticide. As an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, it also has sedative/tranquilizing properties and is, therefore, listed as an Association of Racing Commissioners International Class 3 Foreign Substance, indicating its potential to influence the outcome of horse races. We identified the principal equine metabolite of amitraz as N-2,4-dimethylphenyl-N′-methylformamidine by electrospray ionization(+)-mass spectrometry and developed a gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method for its detection, quantitation, and confirmation in performance horse regulation. The GC-MS method involves derivatization with t-butyldimethylsilyl groups; selected ion monitoring (SIM) of m/z …

Phosphorylation Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Phosphoprotein P Is Indispensable For Virus Growth†, Subash C. Das, Asit K. Pattnaik Jan 2004

Phosphorylation Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Phosphoprotein P Is Indispensable For Virus Growth†, Subash C. Das, Asit K. Pattnaik

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The phosphoprotein (P) of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is an essential subunit of the viral RNAdependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) complex. It is phosphorylated at two different domains. Using defective interfering (DI) RNA or minigenomic RNA templates, we previously demonstrated that phosphorylation within the amino-terminal domain I is essential for transcription, whereas phosphorylation within the carboxyterminal domain II is necessary for replication. For the present study, we examined the role of the phosphorylation of residues in these domains in the life cycle of VSV. Various mutant P coding sequences were inserted into a full-length cDNA clone of VSV, and the virus …

Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Regulation Of Yeast Lifespan Reveals Reactive Oxygen Species-Dependent And -Independent Components Of Aging, Ahmet Koc, Audrey P. Gasch, Julian C. Rutherford, Hwa-Young Kim, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2004

Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Regulation Of Yeast Lifespan Reveals Reactive Oxygen Species-Dependent And -Independent Components Of Aging, Ahmet Koc, Audrey P. Gasch, Julian C. Rutherford, Hwa-Young Kim, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Aging is thought to be caused by the accumulation of damage, primarily from oxidative modifications of cellular components by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Here we used yeast methionine sulfoxide reductases MsrA and MsrB to address this hypothesis. In the presence of oxygen, these antioxidants could increase yeast lifespan and did so independent of the lifespan extension offered by caloric restriction. However, under ROS-deficient, strictly anaerobic conditions, yeast lifespan was shorter, not affected by MsrA or MsrB, and further reduced by caloric restriction. In addition, we identified changes in the global gene expression associated with aging in yeast, and they did …

Glycosyltransferases Encoded By Viruses, Nicolas Markine-Goriaynoff, Laurent Gillet, James L. Van Etten, Haralambos Korres, Naresh Verma, Alain Vanderplasschen

James Van Etten Publications

Studies of cellular biology in recent decades have highlighted the crucial roles of glycans in numerous important biological processes, raising the concept of glycomics that is now considered as important as genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. For millions of years, viruses have been co-evolving with their hosts. Consequently, during this co-evolution process, viruses have acquired mechanisms to mimic, hijack or sabotage host processes that favour their replication, including mechanisms to modify the glycome. The importance of the glycome in the regulation of host–virus interactions has recently led to a new concept called ‘glycovirology’. One fascinating aspect of glycovirology is the study …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Type III secretion systems are highly conserved among gram-negative plant and animal pathogenic bacteria. Through the type III secretion system, bacteria inject a number of virulence proteins into the host cells. Analysis of the whole genome sequence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 strain identified a locus, named HopPtoF, that is homologous to the avirulence gene locus avrPphF in P. syringae pv. phaseolicola. The HopPtoF locus harbors two genes, ShcFPto and HopFPto, that are preceded by a single hrp box promoter. We present evidence here to show that ShcFPto and HopFPto encode a type …
