A Prisoner's Right To Religious Diet Beyond The Free Exercise Clause, 51 Ucla L. Rev. 1151 (2004), Benjamin Liu Jan 2004

A Prisoner's Right To Religious Diet Beyond The Free Exercise Clause, 51 Ucla L. Rev. 1151 (2004), Benjamin Liu

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

Are religious prisoners entitled to dietary accommodations consistent with their religious beliefs? The current answer for this question derives from two 1987 cases, Turner v. Safley and O'Lone v. Estate of Shabazz, in which the U.S. Supreme Court articulated a factor-driven balancing test. Under this test, a prison regulation may burden an inmate's rights only if, on balance, the regulation reasonably serves a penological interest. However, the application of the Turner test often leads to conflicting results in the lower courts. The conflicting legal decisions stem from ambiguities in the concept of "reasonableness." In this Comment, I argue that the …

A Comparison Of Lexical Interventions On Early Grammatical Development : Does An Emphasis On Verbs Matter?, Jamie M. Murphy Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Lexical Interventions On Early Grammatical Development : Does An Emphasis On Verbs Matter?, Jamie M. Murphy

Honors Capstones

According to the current definition of Specific Language Impairment (SLI), the transition to word combinations can be a troublesome period for children with this impairment. The purpose of this study is to reveal if an emphasis on verbs during intervention really makes a difference in children's progress in language intervention. By examining two types of intervention - one a traditional lexicon therapy without an explicit focus on verbs, the other an intervention that included an explicit focus on facilitating the verb lexicon - this study highlights how intervention with verbs may foster a child's ability to produce word combinations. Two …

Mount Rainier - A Ticking Time Bomb, Justin Tureson

Honors Capstones

Mount Rainier, though beautiful, presents a major problem to the area around the Puget Sound. This includes the metropolitan area of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympus, Puyallup, and their suburbs. The problem is the threat of volcanic disaster. The purpose of this project was to look into the potential volcanic hazards to the area and the preparedness of the area in response to an eruption. This was done by looking at the history of the mountain, past eruptions, and emergency management plans in place. To predict an eruption now, the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was looked at for comparison. Research on …

Behavioural And Physiological Measurements Of Visual Performance In The Cuttlefish, Sepia Officinalis, Gillian Groeger Jan 2004

Behavioural And Physiological Measurements Of Visual Performance In The Cuttlefish, Sepia Officinalis, Gillian Groeger

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis investigated the behaviour and physiology of the visual system of Sepia officinalis by studying systematically its visual sensitivity and its spatial resolution. The cephalopod retina is composed of only photoreceptors and supporting cells, thereby providing a unique opportunity to study the interactions between photoreceptors, without the influence of other neurons, such as those typically found in the vertebrate retina. The minimum separable angle (MSA), a measure of spatial resolution, of S. officinalis was determined from behavioural experiments to be 42' for animals of 8 cm mantle length at 15 µW/cm² light intensity. As the animals grew in size …

The Benthic Ecology Of Marine Aggregate Deposits, Jamie Edward Robinson Jan 2004

The Benthic Ecology Of Marine Aggregate Deposits, Jamie Edward Robinson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Macrobenthic assemblages and sedimentary conditions of five areas were described and compared; the role of abiotic factors in shaping benthic distributions was also examined. Two of the study sites were actively dredged at the time of sample collection and the effects of this aggregate extraction were investigated. It was concluded that trailer dredging (at the level intensity employed at these sites) was not associated with any significant disruption to benthic community structure, despite the differences in abiotic and biotic characteristics of the two dredged areas. A meta-analysis of findings from published dredging impact studies revealed a differential response to dredging …

Biomarkers Of Xeno-Oestrogen Exposure In Decapod Crustaceans, Matthew Burton Sanders Jan 2004

Biomarkers Of Xeno-Oestrogen Exposure In Decapod Crustaceans, Matthew Burton Sanders

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Many anthropogenic chemicals, most notably xeno-oestrogens, are known to have the potential to disrupt vertebrate endocrine systems. Induction of the female-specific protein vitellogenin (Vtg) in male fish, for example, is a well-known effect of exposure to xeno-oestrogens and serves as a biomarker of such exposure. There have been few comparable studies of putative biomarkers of endocrine disruption in decapods. The current study aimed to establish if reproduction and development of two decapods, the prawn, Palaemon elegans and the crab, Carcinus maenas, were affected following exposure to known oestrogenic chemicals and whether a biomarker approach, analogous to that for vertebrates, could …

Speech Enabled E-Learning Technology For Adult Literacy Tutoring, Jason Meade Jan 2004

Speech Enabled E-Learning Technology For Adult Literacy Tutoring, Jason Meade

Theses

This research presents the work involved in developing a speech-enabled e-Learning prototype for use in literacy tutoring. As the main objective was to develop an interface for literacy learning, initial research concentrated on establishing a framework for literacy e-Leaming through the use of speech technology. Requirements for best practice e-Learning and the relevance of learning theories to an e-Learning application were also investigated. The technologies to facilitate this, such as text to speech technologies and mark-up languages, were addressed during the implementation of speech-enabled prototypes. Both server-side and client-side prototypes were implemented to investigate speech technology. Testing found the server-side …

Factors Influencing A Declining Pronghorn Population In Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, Jaret D. Sievers Jan 2004

Factors Influencing A Declining Pronghorn Population In Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, Jaret D. Sievers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) were reintroduced into Wind Cave National Park (WCNP) in 1914 and thus, have inhabited the park for almost a century. A decline in the population has raised concern for the continued existence of pronghorn inside the park. Historically, pronghorn numbers reached greater than 300 individuals but were estimated to be less than 50 individuals during this study. Knowledge of food habits, genetic structure, causes of mortality, survival rates, and information related to movements were important to developing an understanding of factors contributing to this decline. Past studies have described spatial relationships and breeding behavior of adults and …

Effects Of Fire On The Nutritional Ecology Of Selected Ungulates In The Southern Black Hills, South Dakota, Teresa J. Zimmerman Jan 2004

Effects Of Fire On The Nutritional Ecology Of Selected Ungulates In The Southern Black Hills, South Dakota, Teresa J. Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in the 1990s indicated that populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northern and central Black Hills had declined since the late 1970s likely due to habitat deterioration. In August 2000, the Jasper fire consumed nearly 35,000 ha of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest in the southern Black Hills. To ascertain the nutritional condition of white-tailed deer and mule deer (O. hemionus) and their response to fire, 5 adult white-tailed deer and 5 adult mule deer were collected in burned and unburned habitat, in February and August, 2002 and 2003. Collected deer were weighed and necropsied at a …

Influence Of Diets Formulated To Increase The Supply Of Ketones Or Ketone Precursors On The Carbohydrate Status And Performance Of Transition Dairy Cows, Jeffrey Michael Defrain Jan 2004

Influence Of Diets Formulated To Increase The Supply Of Ketones Or Ketone Precursors On The Carbohydrate Status And Performance Of Transition Dairy Cows, Jeffrey Michael Defrain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research to date has focused on increasing the supply of glucose precursors in transition dairy cows to reduce ketosis. Ketones and ketone bodies represent energy sources for body tissues; therefore, conserving blood glucose for lactose synthesis in the mammary gland. This led to the hypothesis that transition cows might benefit from diets formulated to stimulate rumen epithelial ketogenesis or dietary ingredients supplying ketone precursors. A series of experiments were conducted to study the impact of diets formulated to increase the supply of ketones (via feeding lactose, glycerol, or an alphaamylase enzyme preparation) or ketone precursors (feeding Ca soaps of longchain …
