Effect Of Antisense Oligodeoxynucleotides For Icam-1 On Renal Ischaemia–Reperfusion Injury In The Anaesthetised Rat, L.V. Kiew, M. Abdul Sattar, C.H. Law, N.A. Abdullah, N. Abdul Rahman, K. Khalifah Sidik, E.J. Edward J. Johns
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
An antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (As-ODN) to the 3’ untranslated region of the mRNA sequence expressing the intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was employed to determine ICAM-1’s role in renal ischaemia–reperfusion injury in the rat. Wistar-Kyoto rats receiving I.V. either lipofectin–As-ODN (As-ODN group), lipofectin–reverse ODN (Rv-ODN group) or lipofectin (ischaemia control group) 8 h prior to study were anaesthetized and subjected to 30 min of renal artery occlusion. Renal haemodynamic and excretory parameters were monitored before and after renal ischaemia. On termination of the study renal tissue was subjected to histological and Western blot analysis. Renal blood flow decreased in the 3 h …

Occurrence Of Giardia Cysts And Cryptosporidium Oocysts In The Temuan Orang Asli (Aborigine) River System, Yvonne Ai Lian Lim, R.A. Ahmad
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
A survey of the river water frequently used by the Temuan Orang Asli (aborigine) indicated that 66.7 of the river water samples were Giardia cyst positive and 5.6 were Cryptosporidium oocyst positive. Although Giardia cysts were detected in samples from all the sites (e.g. upstream, midstream, and downstream), Cryptosporidium was only present in one river water sample taken from downstream from a village. The only sample of upstream water which contained Giardia cysts had a concentration of 0.7 cysts/l. All samples taken from midstream contained cysts with a mean concentration of 9.8 +/- 6.6 cysts/l (range = 1-20 cysts/l). Eighty-three …

Pharmacophore Based Synthesis Of 3-Chloroquinoxaline-2-Carboxamides As Serotonin(3) (5-Ht3) Receptor Antagonist, R. Mahesh, R.V. Perumal, P.V. Pandi
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
A series of 3-chloroquinoxaline-2-carboxamides were designed and prepared by the condensation of 3-chloro-2-quinoxaloylchloride with appropriate Mannich bases of the p-aminophenol in the microwave environment. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for serotonin(3) (5-HT3) receptor antagonistic activities in longitudinal muscle-myenteric plexus (LMMP) preparation from guinea pig ileum against the 5-HT3 agonist, 2-methyl-5-HT. Compound 3g exhibited comparable 5-HT3 antagonistic activity (pA(2) 6.4) to that of standard antagonist Ondansetron (pA(2) 6.9), while the other compounds exhibited mild to moderate 5-HT3 antagonistic activities.

Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis Of Multidrug-Resistant And -Sensitive Strains Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa From A Malaysian Hospital, Kwai Lin Thong, Kin Seng Lai, R. Ganeswrie, S.D. Puthucheary
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Over a period of 6 months from January to June 2002, an unusual increase in the isolation of highly resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains was observed in the various wards and intensive care units of a large general hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. An equal number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and drug-susceptible strains were collected randomly from swabs, respiratory specimens, urine, blood, cerebral spinal fluid, and central venous catheters to determine the clonality and genetic variation of the strains. Macrorestriction analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed that the 19 MDR strains were genetically very homogenous; the majority showed the dominant profile S1 …

Salmonellosis In Persons Infected With Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Report Of Seven Cases From Malaysia, S.D. Puthucheary, K.P. Ng, A. Hafeez, N.S. Raja, H. Hassan
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased risk of salmonellosis when compared to the general population. We describe seven such patients with Salmonella bacteremia, of whom two had recurrent salmonellosis. In the latter two cases the infection was unusually severe, characterized by widespread infection, bacteremia and relapse, despite standard antimicrobial therapy. HIV-infected individuals will benefit from education on the source of Salmonella, mode of acquisition and prevention through safe food handling and food preparation practices. Because of the difficulty of eradicating Salmonella infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, long-term suppressive treatment with antimicrobials is warranted.

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and antimicrobial susceptibility analysis were undertaken on twenty-three strains of Salmonella enterica serovar Tshiongwe, an unusual serovar, which recently emerged in Malaysia. Antimicrobial susceptibility analysis showed that all the strains were sensitive to ampicilin, chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, and kanamycin. Twenty (87) and 8 (3.5) strains had resistance to tetracycline and streptomycin respectively. PFGE analysis subtyped 23 strains into 10 profiles (Dice coefficient of similarity, F = 0.7-1.0). The predominant profile, X1 was found in both clinical and environmental isolates and was widely distributed in different parts of Malaysia during the study period. In addition, isolates recovered …

Teaching In And Against The Empire: Critical Pedagogy As Revolutionary Praxis, Peter Mclaren, Gregory Martin, Ramin Farahmandpur, Nathalia Jaramillo
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"All across the country, critical educators are fighting on dozens of fronts, searching in both form and content for a coherent pedagogical expression that captures their opposition to what they perceive as major developments of world-historical importance... Whilst we will mention some of these fronts in our discussion, our focus will be on expanding the concept so that it addresses both the urgency and the scope of the current crisis of capitalism in relation to the crisis of educational reform, and takes as its central aim the struggle against capitalism and imperialism."
Stygobites Are More Wide-Ranging Than Troglobites, John Lamoreux
Stygobites Are More Wide-Ranging Than Troglobites, John Lamoreux
KIP Articles
Stygobites are thought to be wider ranging than troglobites in the contiguous 48 United States. This assumption is confirmed by showing that stygobite species are recorded from more counties than troglobite species (Mann Whitney U = 80189, Z = −6.781, P < 0.0001). The properties of water flow through caves may allow greater dispersal opportunities for stygobites above the normal water table during floods and could be one reason for the larger ranges of these species.

Building Beef Cow Nutritional Programs With The 1996 Nrc Beef Cattle Requirements Model, G. P. Lardy, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein, H. H. Patterson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Designing a sound cow-calf nutritional program requires knowledge of nutrient requirements, diet quality, and intake. Effectively using the NRC (1996) beef cattle requirements model (1996 NRC) also requires knowledge of dietary degradable intake protein (DIP) and microbial efficiency. Objectives of this paper are to 1) describe a framework in which 1996 NRC-applicable data can be generated, 2) describe seasonal changes in nutrients on native range, 3) use the 1996 NRC to predict nutrient balance for cattle grazing these forages, and 4) make recommendations for using the 1996 NRC for forage-fed cattle. Extrusa samples were collected over 2 yr on native …
Phosphorus Fractionation In Manure From Swine Fed Traditional And Low-Phytate Corn Diets, Brian J. Wienhold, Phillip S. Miller
Phosphorus Fractionation In Manure From Swine Fed Traditional And Low-Phytate Corn Diets, Brian J. Wienhold, Phillip S. Miller
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Traditional corn (Zea mays L.) (TC), the primary grain used in swine (Sus scrofa) diets, stores a majority of its P as phytate, which is largely unavailable for digestion by nonruminant animals. Low- phytate corn (LPC) contains similar amounts of total P but a smaller percentage of P as phytate. When fed to swine, LPC increases P utilization and reduces P content of manure. While differences in P content between manure from animals fed TC and LPC diets have been documented, solubility and lability of manure P have not been compared. Manure P was characterized in manure …
Fat Supplementation And Reproduction In Beef Females, Richard N. Funston
Fat Supplementation And Reproduction In Beef Females, Richard N. Funston
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Inadequate dietary energy intake and poor body condition can negatively affect reproductive function. Supplemental lipids have been used to increase energy density of the diet and may also have direct positive effects on reproduction in beef cattle. Several fatty acid sources have been studied as they relate to reproductive function. Common sources include sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, rice bran, soybeans, fishmeal, animal tallow, and calcium salts of fatty acids. Fats have been fed before and after calving, during the breeding season, and during heifer development. Response to fat has been investigated through measuring body weight and body condition score, age at …
