Wear Mechanisms In Ceramic Hip Implants, M. Slonaker

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

The wear in hip implants is one of the main causes for premature hip replacements. The wear affects the potential life of the prosthesis and subsequent removals of in-vivo implants. Therefore, the objective of this article is to review various joints that show lower wear rates and consequently higher life. Ceramics are used in hip implants and have been found to produce lower wear rates. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of ceramics compared to other implant materials. Different types of ceramics that are being used are reviewed in terms of the wear characteristics, debris released, and their size …

Los Angeles News Service V. Reuters: Damages For Extraterritorial Copyright Exploitation, Johnathan Penkower

University of San Francisco Law Review

IN 1992, THE acquittals of four police officers in the Rodney King beating trial led to widespread rioting and looting in Los Angeles. Rodney King, an African-American motorist, was beaten by white Los Angeles Police Department officers after he led the officers on a highspeed chase and then allegedly resisted arrest. A videotape of the incident led to the trial of the accused four officers. After a threemonth trial and seven days of deliberation, the jury acquitted the officers, and the city of Los Angeles reacted with violence.

Judges As Film Critics: New Approaches To Filmic Evidence, Jessica M. Silbey Jan 2004

Judges As Film Critics: New Approaches To Filmic Evidence, Jessica M. Silbey

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article exposes internal contradictions in case law concerning the use and admissibility of film as evidence. Based on a review of more than ninety state and federal cases dating from 1923 to the present, the Article explains how the source of these contradictions is the frequent miscategorization of film as "demonstrative evidence, "evidence that purports to illustrate other evidence, rather than to be directly probative of some fact at issue. The Article further demonstrates how these contradictions are based on two venerable jurisprudential anxieties. One is the concern about the growing trend toward replacing the traditional testimony of live …

Golf Course Pollution Prevention Guide, Iowa Waste Reduction Center Jan 2004

Golf Course Pollution Prevention Guide, Iowa Waste Reduction Center

Iowa Waste Reduction Center Book Gallery

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pollution prevention can be defined as: “The use of materials, processes, or practices that reduces or eliminates the creation of pollutants or wastes at the source.” Pollution prevention represents a shift away from the old school of thought, “pollution control,” in which waste was not dealt with until after it was generated. Through pollution prevention, we look at the processes that generate the waste to see if we can avoid creating a waste in the first place, or at least reduce the hazardous nature of the waste. When this is not possible, the …

The Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Boone River, North Central Iowa, Ellet Hoke Jan 2004

The Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Boone River, North Central Iowa, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of the freshwater mussels of the Boone River conducted in September 1982 documented a fauna consisting of seventeen then extant or relict species. Analysis of museum records yielded one additional species unrecovered since 1937. Subsequent to the 1982 study, additional surveys were conducted in the region in 1984-1985 and 1998-1999 as a part of two statewide surveys. A comparison of the results of the three studies suggests a significant decline in the unionid fauna in the Boone River since 1982. While it is almost certain that a real decline in the fauna has occurred, the extent of this …

Remembrance Of Things Past? The Relationship Of Past To Future In Pursuing Justice In Mediation, Carrie J. Menkel-Meadow Jan 2004

Remembrance Of Things Past? The Relationship Of Past To Future In Pursuing Justice In Mediation, Carrie J. Menkel-Meadow

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

What must be remembered and acknowledged before we can move forward to create a future together, whether individually or collectively? Or, as Avishai Margalit has recently put it, is there an ethics of memory - must some things be remembered; what can be forgiven or forgotten in a moral sense? I have long been worried about the emphasis in mediation to focus on the future, to seek ''solutions" to problems in which the parties are guided to "move forward," even while "reorienting the parties to each other," in crafting a more productive relationship. With the growing use and adaptation of …
