Nf04-598 Rabies In Nebraska, Annette K. Bredthauer, David R. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Rabies is a deadly virus infection that can attack the central nervous system of most warm blooded animals, including humans. Rabies is a very old disease. The first recorded description of the disease dates from the 23rd century BC in Babylon. It was rampant in Europe in the 19th century and was carried to the Americas by animals on the early ships.

This NebFact describes rabies in animals and explains how people can protect themselves, as well as their pets or livestock from rabies exposure.

Statistical Procedures For Evaluating Daily And Monthly Hydrologic Model Predictions, Marilyn E. Coffey, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba, Alex W. Fogle

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The overall study objective was to evaluate the applicability of different qualitative and quantitative methods for comparing daily and monthly SWAT computer model hydrologic streamflow predictions to observed data, and to recommend statistical methods for use in future model evaluations. Statistical methods were tested using daily streamflows and monthly equivalent runoff depths. The statistical techniques included linear regression, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, nonparametric tests, t-test, objective functions, autocorrelation, and cross-correlation. None of the methods specifically applied to the non-normal distribution and dependence between data points for the daily predicted and observed data. Of the tested methods, median objective functions, sign test, autocorrelation, …

The Criminalization Of Survival Attempts: Locking Up Female Runaways And Other Status Offenders, Alecia Humphrey Jan 2004

The Criminalization Of Survival Attempts: Locking Up Female Runaways And Other Status Offenders, Alecia Humphrey

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

To control and help runaway children, courts have classified them as "status offenders" without getting to the real source of their runaway behavior, such as physical or sexual abuse at home. Instead, confining runaway children to the judicial system through the use of status offenses has further entrenched these runaways' behavior without helping them develop more effective copings skills; children often run away again, commit substantive crimes, once again become victims, or else are institutionalized or incarcerated on down the road. Indeed, girls are especially prone to this cycle, since their numbers are disproportionately higher than those of boys in …

A Comparison Of Drinking Water Contamination In Buried Slab Wells, Other Large-Diameter Wells, And Drilled Wells, Rita M. Gergely Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Drinking Water Contamination In Buried Slab Wells, Other Large-Diameter Wells, And Drilled Wells, Rita M. Gergely

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This study presents the results of a statewide water well survey conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Health from 1993 to 1995 to determine whether there were statistically significant differences between well water contamination in buried slab wells, other large-diameter wells, and drilled wells. Wells were sampled for total coliform bacteria, fecal coliform bacteria, nitrate, and atrazine. Staff collected water samples and completed a site survey at each well, which included an interview with the occupant or owner and actual observations of the wellhead and surrounding area.

The study included 293 buried slab wells, 287 other large-diameter wells, and …

[Review Of] Andrew Pilkington, Racial Disadvantage And Ethnic Diversity In Britain, Simboonath Singh Jan 2004

[Review Of] Andrew Pilkington, Racial Disadvantage And Ethnic Diversity In Britain, Simboonath Singh

Ethnic Studies Review

Andrew Pilkington's Racial Disadvantage and Ethnic Diversity in Britain (2003) is a comprehensive and systematic study of race and ethnicity in contemporary Britain. The approach taken is decidedly sociological but incorporates an inter-disciplinary perspective, drawing upon areas such as History, Politics, Geography and Cultural Studies. In Chapter 1 the author makes a fine conceptual distinction between core concepts such as race and ethnicity and theoretically subscribes to the more dynamic social constructionist approach to ethnicity as an acceptable alternative to previous models. Racialization is invoked as an alternative problematic of racism to alert the reader to the dangers of reification …

Effects Of Modified Constraint Induced Therapy On Upper Limb Function In Subacute Stroke Patients., Abdul-Alim A. Atteya Jan 2004

Effects Of Modified Constraint Induced Therapy On Upper Limb Function In Subacute Stroke Patients., Abdul-Alim A. Atteya

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility and efficacy of a modified constraint induced therapy protocol on stroke patients. METHODS: This study was carried out during the period from August 2001 to January 2002 at the Riyadh Medical Complex, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Six stroke patients with subacute cerebrovascular accident (<6 months) were included in the study. Three male and 3 female patients with a mean age of 54.3+/-6.9 years (range 45-67 years), and mean duration of hemiparesis of 4.7 months (range 2.3-5.8 months). They were divided randomly into 3 groups of 2 patients. The first 2 patients (constraint induced therapy group) participated in half an hour of physical and occupational therapy sessions 3 times per week for 10 weeks. During the same period, their unaffected arms and hands were restrained 5 days per week for 5 hours identified as times of frequent use. The second 2 patients (traditional therapy group) received regular therapy administered after 10 weeks. The last 2 patients (control group) received no therapy. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Recovery After Stroke (Fugl), Action Research Arm Test (ARA), Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), and Motor Activity Log (MAL) were administered to the patients. RESULTS: Patients receiving modified constraint induced therapy exhibited substantial improvement on the Fugl, ARA, and WMFT, as well as increases in amount and quality of use of the limb using the MAL. While patients receiving traditional physical and occupational therapy, and no therapy patients exhibited few improvements. CONCLUSION: Modified constraint induced therapy may be an efficacious method of improving function and use of the affected arms in stroke patients exhibiting learned nonuse.

Sharing And Stealing, Jessica Litman Jan 2004

Sharing And Stealing, Jessica Litman

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The purpose of copyright is to encourage the creation and mass dissemination of a wide variety of works. Until recently, most means of mass dissemination required a significant capital investment. The lion's share of the economic proceeds of copyrights were therefore channeled to publishers and distributors, and the law was designed to facilitate that. Digital distribution invites us to reconsider all of the assumptions underlying that model. We are still in the early history of the networked digital environment, but already we've seen experiments with both direct and consumer-to-consumer distribution of works of authorship. One remarkable example of the difference …

Reproductive Health

In October 1999, the Frontiers in Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) program began a three-year collaboration with the World Health Organization, the Senegal Ministries of Health, Education, and Youth, the Center for Research and Training in Health and Population, and the Population Training Group to test interventions to improve the reproductive health of youth aged 10–19. The community-based intervention included sensitization on adolescent reproductive health for community and religious leaders, reaching parents through women’s groups, and education sessions led by peer educators using a life-skills curriculum. As part of the clinic-based intervention, providers and peer educators were trained to offer youth-friendly services. …

Retention And Viability Characteristics Of Mammalian Cells In An Acoustically Driven Polymer Mesh, Zhaowei Wang, Paul Grabenstetter, Donald L. Feke, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A processing approach for the collection and retention of mammalian cells within a high porosity polyester mesh having millimeter-sized pores has been studied. Cell retention occurs via energizing the mesh with a low intensity, resonant acoustic field. The resulting acoustic field induces the interaction of cells with elements of the mesh or with each other and effectively prevents the entrainment of cells in the effluent stream. Experiments involving aqueous suspensions of polystyrene particles were used to provide benchmark data on the performance of the acoustic retention cell. Experiments using mouse hybridoma cells showed that retention densities of over 1.5 × …

Paradise Lost And The Concept Of Creation, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2004

Paradise Lost And The Concept Of Creation, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

On his visit to Eden, Raphael informs Adam and Eve that the universe was not created ex nihilo but rather de deo: everything was fashioned from out of the singular substance of God. This consubstantial connection to God proves universally ennobling by conferring upon each existent a divine origin and a divine composition. Milton's materialist monism, however, prevents him from participating in orthodox ideas of God that differentiate deity from all else on the basis of a divine ousia unique to him. Unable to locate God's divinity in a material difference, Milton sets God off from every other existent on …
