Adaptive Intelligent User Interfaces With Emotion Recognition, Fatma Nasoz
Adaptive Intelligent User Interfaces With Emotion Recognition, Fatma Nasoz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is on creating Adaptive Intelligent User Interfaces to facilitate enhanced natural communication during the Human-Computer Interaction by recognizing users' affective states (i.e., emotions experienced by the users) and responding to those emotions by adapting to the current situation via an affective user model created for each user. Controlled experiments were designed and conducted in a laboratory environment and in a Virtual Reality environment to collect physiological data signals from participants experiencing specific emotions. Algorithms (k-Nearest Neighbor [KNN], Discriminant Function Analysis [DFA], Marquardt-Backpropagation [MBP], and Resilient Backpropagation [RBP]) were implemented to analyze the collected data signals …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In The Gallbladders Of Experimentally Infected Calves, William C. Stoffregen, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Fifteen weaned calves (age 89–141 days) were treated with dexamethasone (0.25 mg/kg, IV) for 3 days before, the day of, and the day after inoculation with 10 colony-forming units of either Escherichia coli O157:H7 (strain 86-24, which produces Shiga toxin 2 and intimin; n=13) or nonpathogenic E. coli (strain 123, which does not produce Shiga toxin or intimin; n=2). All calves were necropsied 4 days after inoculation. Histologic lesions of attaching and effacing bacteria were observed in the large intestine (12/13) and in the gallbladder mucosa (5/13) of calves inoculated with E. coli 86-24. Cholecystitis was present in 12 of …
Analysis Of Demographic Variables And Levels Of Stress In Law Enforcement Officers, Kathleen M. Jansen
Analysis Of Demographic Variables And Levels Of Stress In Law Enforcement Officers, Kathleen M. Jansen
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Employment in a law enforcement profession exposes an individual to potential stressors not experienced in most other professions. Sporadic efforts have been made to design stress management programs to assist officers in coping with the demands of their jobs. Much of the previous research on law enforcement stress has focused on examining the effectiveness of various coping skills; however, the training has focused on teaching a healthy lifestyle. This study seeks to add to the existing research by examining what elements of the job are perceived as the most stressful and what demographic variables, if any, may influence an individual's …
Relationship Between Cognitive Distortions And Psychological Disorders Across Diagnostic Axes, Bradley Michael Rosenfield
Relationship Between Cognitive Distortions And Psychological Disorders Across Diagnostic Axes, Bradley Michael Rosenfield
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this study was twofold: First, the study sought to determine whether or not cognitive distortions correlated with the number and severity of psychological disorders across diagnostic axes. Second, the study endeavored to assess further the validity and reliability of a promising new self-report measure, The Inventory of Cognitive Distortions (ICD), by correlating this instrument with clinical diagnoses as determined by the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III. The sample was selected from a heterogeneous adult outpatient population. Participants meeting inclusion criteria presented for psychological treatment or assessment. Excluded were participants who had less than an eighth grade education, or …

Detection And Characterization Of Amitraz Resistance In The Southern Cattle Tick, Boophilus Microplus (Acari: Ixodidae), Andrew Y. Li, Ronald B. Davey, Robert J. Miller, John E. George
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Amitraz, a formamidine acaricide, plays an important role in the control of the southern cattle tick, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini), and other tick species that infest cattle, dogs, and wild animals. Although resistance to amitraz in B. microplus was previously reported in several countries, the actual measurement of the level of amitraz resistance in ticks has been difficult to determine due to the lack of a proper bioassay technique. We conducted a survey, by using a newly reported technique that was a modification of the standard Food and Agriculture Organization larval packet test, to measure the levels of resistance to amitraz …
Temperature-Dependent Oxygen Limitation In Insect Eggs, H. Arthur Woods, Ryan I. Hill
Temperature-Dependent Oxygen Limitation In Insect Eggs, H. Arthur Woods, Ryan I. Hill
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
Most terrestrial insect embryos support metabolism with oxygen from the environment by diffusion across the eggshell. Because metabolism is more temperature sensitive than diffusion, embryos should be relatively oxygen-limited at high temperatures. We tested whether survival, development time and metabolism of eggs of a moth, Manduca sexta, were sensitive to experimentally imposed variation in atmospheric oxygen availability (5–50 kPa; normoxia at sea level is 21 kPa) across a range of biologically realistic temperatures. Temperature–oxygen interactions were apparent in most experiments. Hypoxia affected survival more strongly at warmer temperatures. Metabolic rates, measured as rates of CO2 emission, were virtually insensitive …
Establishing A Stable Democratic Constitutional Structure In Iraq: Some Basic Considerations, Paul Williams
Establishing A Stable Democratic Constitutional Structure In Iraq: Some Basic Considerations, Paul Williams
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
As the situation in Iraq continues to stabilize, the people of Iraq will turn to the task of reconstituting an Iraqi state. One of the first steps in this process will be to design, agree upon, and implement a new constitutional structure. While drafting a new constitution is a difficult and contentious process for any country, the challenges are substantially magnified for Iraq given its complex mosaic of ethnic and religious identities, the history of repression under Saddam Hussein, the necessary presence of American forces, and Iraq’s complex relations with its neighboring states. The overriding tension faced by the drafters …

Traditionally, mathematics like any other subject is being taught using books in school. The advancement technology and use of computer has made interactive learning and teaching possible. Interactive learning can be carried out anywhere as long as there's a computer. The students do not have to be at a classroom at a particular place or at a particular time. Thus, I have chosen my thesis title as "Interactive 30 Multimedia Courseware in Mathematics for Primary School Children" which I have names it as "3D Math Learning''. This courseware will create in CD-ROM based and will be suitable for primary school …

Magnetic Resonance Image Segmentation Using Pulse-Coupled Neural Network / Siti Shufinaz Mohd Zainudin, Mohd Zainudin Siti Shufinaz
Student Works (2000-2009)
The pulse-coupled neuron, which is significantly-different from the conventional artificial neuron, is a result of recent research conducted on the visual cortex of cats and monkeys. Pulse-coupled neural networks (PCNNs) are modeled to capture the essence of recent understanding of image interpretation processes in biological neural systems. Study indicates that the PCNN is capable of image smoothing, image segmentation and feature extraction. The PCNN reduces noise in digital images better than traditional smoothing techniques. As an image segmented the PCNN performs well even when the intensity varies significantly within regions, and adjacent regions have overlapping intensity ranges.
