Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer Jan 2004

Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer

Student Theses and Dissertations

A micron sized glass sphere is able to confine light to its interior volume. The trapped light describes an orbital trajectory circumnavigating just below the microsphere surface. Whenever the light ray tries to escape it is sent back on its circular path by total internal reflection. The light orbit closes in on itself several thousand times and thus creates an optical resonance. The unprecedented narrow linewidth of such a microsphere resonance (Q factors of up to 3x10⁹) allows precise measurement of its frequency. Dielectric microspheres of very high Q are thus the ideal choice for a resonant molecular sensor. Although …

Near Eastern Sources For The Palace Of Alkinoos, Erwin F. Cook Jan 2004

Near Eastern Sources For The Palace Of Alkinoos, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The last quarter century of archaeological discoveries have significantly enriched and nuanced our understanding of interactions between the Greek world and the Levant during the Greek Archaic period (conventionally defined as 776-479 B.C.E.). They have also allowed us to construct an increasingly detailed model explaining the diffusion of knowledge from Mesopotamia to Greece at this time. In addition, advances in our understanding of oral cultures, and the role of oral narrative traditions within them have cast valuable new light on the ways in which the Homeric epics appropriate, adapt, and preserve cultural knowledge. The palace of Alkinoos, described in Book …

Virtual Solar System / Chong Yee Wah, Yee Wah Chong

Student Works (2000-2009)

3D modelling is a three-stage process: First, obtain data and get it into computer; second, use the computer to interact with it, just as manipulating real object, but without annoyances like gravity and material strength· and third. output or store the modified data. Or, the data might subsequently be made 'real' again by automatically fabricating an object using. Deriving a solar system is much challenging as it involves creation of nine different sizes of planets, obtaining the images that can be combined to form a realistic 30 meshes, importing the sound files that can pronounce the name of the planets …

Variable Effects Of Mitochondrial Inhibitors And Uncouplers Related To Feeding Times In Colonial Hydroids, Robert Fletcher Jan 2004

Variable Effects Of Mitochondrial Inhibitors And Uncouplers Related To Feeding Times In Colonial Hydroids, Robert Fletcher

Honors Capstones

The mitochondria of a cell are the centers of oxidative phosphorylation in aerobic organisms. Certain compounds have been found to perturb the proton gradient created during energy metabolism causing an increase or decrease in the consumption of oxygen by a colonial hydroid. Azide, an inhibitor has been shown to decrease the consumption of oxygen while dinitrophenol, an uncoupler, has been shown to increase oxygen consumption. In colonial hydroids on non-feeding days, the gastrovascular flow of the colonies is inactive and the mitochondria are less responsive to environmental cues such as the presence of these compounds. Therefore, larger concentrations of the …

Children And Television : A Literature Review Of The Influence Of Television On Children From 1970-2000, Lisa Suwalski

Honors Capstones

This review focused on television's influences on children in the period from 1970 to 2000. This review is important because of the explanations it presents for the arguments made by numerous researchers about the effects of television on society, and how the influence changed society from 1970 to 2000. A valuable aspect of this review was that if television was considered a medium that changes, and was continually refined, why did only certain issues catch the attention of researchers? Often, in each separate decade, similar types of influences of television on children arose and were repeatedly studied by the researchers. …

The Case For Cautious Optimism: California Environmental Propositions In The Late Twentieth Century, Marie Bolton, Nancy Unger Jan 2004

The Case For Cautious Optimism: California Environmental Propositions In The Late Twentieth Century, Marie Bolton, Nancy Unger

History

The efficacy of direct democracy throughout California's history continues to be a subject of intense debate, a state-wide phenomenon with an international audience. California boasts the world's fifth largest economy, and plays a leadership role in national, and sometimes even international, politics. British scholar Wyn Grant, studying the politics of air quality management in California, succinctly sums up the burning issue for environmentalists worldwide who are striving to understand the efficacy of California's activists' efforts: in "Direct Democracy in California: Example or Warning?" Grant concludes that although direct democracy has its merits, its history in California ultimately provides more of …

Take-Off Mechanics In Hummingbirds (Trochilidae), Bret W. Tobalske, Douglas L. Altshuler, Donald R. Powers Jan 2004

Take-Off Mechanics In Hummingbirds (Trochilidae), Bret W. Tobalske, Douglas L. Altshuler, Donald R. Powers

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Initiating flight is challenging, and considerable effort has focused on understanding the energetics and aerodynamics of take-off for both machines and animals. For animal flight, the available evidence suggests that birds maximize their initial flight velocity using leg thrust rather than wing flapping. The smallest birds, hummingbirds (Order Apodiformes), are unique in their ability to perform sustained hovering but have proportionally small hindlimbs that could hinder generation of high leg thrust. Understanding the take-off flight of hummingbirds can provide novel insight into the take-off mechanics that will be required for micro-air vehicles. During take-off by hummingbirds, we measured hindlimb forces …

The Impact Of Social Interactions On Torpor Use In Hummingbirds, Donald R. Powers Jan 2004

The Impact Of Social Interactions On Torpor Use In Hummingbirds, Donald R. Powers

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Measurements of metabolic rate and fat deposition were made on a three-species hummingbird guild in southeastern Arizona to determine if the energetic advantage gained by a dominant territorial species (Lampornis clemenciae) over subordinate competitors (Archilochus alexandri and Eugenes fulgens) resulted in less frequent use of torpor. Results showed that L. clemenciae was able to store enough fat during the day to avoid nocturnal torpor. Restricted access to food limited fat storage in both competitors, resulting in frequent torpor use. Avoidance of torpor by L. clemenciae supports the notion that use of nocturnal torpor by hummingbirds comes with a cost, and …

Variation In The Antipredator Responses Of Three Sympatric Plethodontid Salamanders To Predator-Diet Cues, Aaron M. Sullivan, Dale M. Madison, Jason R. Rohr

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Organisms may reduce the risk of predation by responding to chemical cues from predators. Recent research shows that many species vary their antipredator response depending on the diet of the predator. We examined the responses of three plethodontid species of salamander (Plethodon cinereus, Eurycea bislineata, and Desmognathus ochrophaeus) to chemical cues from a shared snake predator (Thamnophis sirtalis). At the time of the study, Eurycea bislineata showed overlap in habitat with Plethodon cinereus and Desmognathus ochrophaeus, but Plethodon cinereus and Desmognathus ochrophaeus showed no overlap with one another. Each salamander species was presented with chemical cues from snakes fed Desmognathus …

The Just War Tradition And Natural Law, Jean Bethke Elshtain Jan 2004

The Just War Tradition And Natural Law, Jean Bethke Elshtain

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay is divided into three parts. First, it briefly discusses Augustine on the notion of a "naturalistic morality" implanted in human minds and hearts. Second, it traces the ways in which such notions as human nature figure in Augustinian and post-Augustinian arguments concerning war and peace. Third, it takes the measure of our current international crises and challenges from the perspective of human dignity the "naturalistic morality" Augustine addresses when he insists that there is, in fact, a nature we share, trails in its wake far-reaching ethical complications.

The Law Of Words: Standing, Environment, And Other Contested Terms, David N. Cassuto Jan 2004

The Law Of Words: Standing, Environment, And Other Contested Terms, David N. Cassuto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services (TOC), Inc., 528 U.S. 167 (2000), exposes fundamental incoherencies within environmental standing doctrine, even while it ostensibly makes standing easier to prove for plaintiffs in environmental citizen suits. According to Laidlaw, an environmental plaintiff needs only to show personal injury to satisfy Article III's standing requirement; she need not show that the alleged statutory violation actually harms the environment. This Article argues that Laidlaw's distinction between injury to the plaintiff and harm to the environment is nonsensical. Both the majority and dissent in Laidlaw incorrectly assume that there exists an objective …

Facts About Footrot - A Special Booklet For Neighbours Of Properties Which Have Been Quarantine For Footrot, Or Farmers Wanting To Know More About Footrot, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

Footrot is a contagious disease of sheep and goats caused by a mix of different bacteria, with the essential one being Dichelobacter nodosus. The bacterial infection can cause varying degrees of damage to the horn of the foot, leading to lameness, and significant loss of body weight and wool production.

There are two main forms of footrot - virulent and benign. Both are caused by D. nodosus. Footrot is diagnosed using two methods; inspecting sheep's feet, and testing skin scrapings in the laboratory

Whose Music Is It Anyway? How We Came To View Musical Expression As A Form Of Property, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2004

Whose Music Is It Anyway? How We Came To View Musical Expression As A Form Of Property, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Many participants in the music industry consider unauthorized transmissions of music files over the Internet to be theft of their property. Many Internet users who exchange music files reject this characterization. Prompted by the dispute over unauthorized music distribution, this Article explores how those who create and distribute music first came to look upon music as their property and when in Western history the law first supported this view. By analyzing the economic and legal structures governing music making in Western Europe from the classical period in Greece through the Renaissance, the Article shows that the law first granted some …
