Psychotherapy Outcome Measures In A Client With A Childhood Disorder, Amy S. Lawrence

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this case study were to: (1) complete a thorough psychosocial assessment on a psychotherapy client, (2) to attribute the most accurate diagnosis, and (3) explain the most beneficial empirical treatment through research and review. The case study consisted of a single 17-year-old Hispanic male who resided in a group home. Data was obtained through individual therapy sessions and two self-report inventories. Findings indicated that client met criteria for Disruptive Behavioral Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (DBD, NOS). Treatment research was done on Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) for two reasons: (1) due to insufficient studies on DBD, NOS, and …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

IL-4 and IL-13 are multi-functional cytokines with overlapping roles in the host defense against infection. Equally important in the regulation of IL-4 and IL-13 are their associated receptors. Though, their functional receptor complexes and signaling pathways are intricate and in some cases, share common elements, the specificity of the responses, nonetheless, resides in the structure and binding of the a-chain components. This report presents the cloning of the swine receptors IL-4Ra and IL-13Ra1 and the effects of parasite infection on their transcription. Pairwise alignment of predicted amino acid sequences indicates that the swine IL-13Ra1 is 86, 83, and 72% similar …

Community And Land Attachment Of Chagga Women On Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Elizabeth Parnell Carr May 2004

Community And Land Attachment Of Chagga Women On Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Elizabeth Parnell Carr

Theses and Dissertations

Chagga women who control land on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, have a deep and profound sense of attachment to their lands and homes. This thesis compares their reasons for attachment to the systemic model. The systemic model states that community attachment is dependent on social ties and interactions. The three factors that lead to these ties are length of residence, social status, and age. In-depth interviews with women in 2002 and 2003, a survey from 2002, and field notes from 2002 and 2003 are used to explain the main factors of attachment of women in three villages on the mountain: Mbahe, …

Passive Stretch Inhibits Central Corelike Lesion Formation In The Soleus Muscles Of Hindlimb-Suspended Unloaded Rats, D. V. Baewer, Mark A. Hoffman, Janell Romatowski, J. L. W. Bain, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley May 2004

Passive Stretch Inhibits Central Corelike Lesion Formation In The Soleus Muscles Of Hindlimb-Suspended Unloaded Rats, D. V. Baewer, Mark A. Hoffman, Janell Romatowski, J. L. W. Bain, Robert H. Fitts, Danny A. Riley

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Hindlimb suspension unloading (HSU) is a ground-based model simulating the effects of microgravity unloading on the musculoskeletal system. In this model, gravity causes the hind foot of the rat to drop, opening the front of the ankle to 90–105° plantar flexion at rest. As HSU proceeds, the normal weight-bearing angle of 30° dorsiflexion is achieved progressively less, and the contraction range of soleus is abbreviated. Our laboratory reported that 12 days of HSU caused central corelike lesions (CCLs) of myofibril breakdown (Riley DA, Slocum GR, Bain JL, Sedlak FR, Sowa TE, and Mellender JW. J Appl Physiol. 69: 58–66, 1990). …

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

This proposal addresses the subject heading ‘Transmutation Fuel Development’ in the 2004 research topic list of the UNLV Transmutation Research Program (TRP) and DOE Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI). The large-scale deployment of remote fabrication and refabrication processes (with a capacity of approx. 100 metric tons of Minor Actinides (MA) annually) will be required for all transmutation scenarios. The objective of this project is the design, analysis, and evaluation of manufacturing processes for transmuter fuel fabrication. Fabrication processes for different fuel types differ in terms of equipment types, throughput, and cost. The evaluation of the fabrication processes will create a …

Do We See Feces?: Loon Pond 2003-2004

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Loon Pond is a small spring fed pond about thirty-two feet deep. The pond’s surface area is 0.69 square miles and the sub-basin is 3.10 square miles. The deepest point is thirty-eight feet. The pond provides the residents with recreational opportunities, such as swimming, fishing, and canoeing. Loon Pond’s shore is a mixture of forest and low density residential. There are 35 homes around the pond, the majority being summer residences.

This past summer (2003) the pond was closed to swimming due to an enterococci count of 121 colonies/100ml as reported in the New Bedford Department Laboratory Division Recreational Water …

Friedman's Bugwatch Water Quality Study - An Update

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Bugwatch is a water quality study program that has been conducted at Friedman and Martin Middle Schools in Taunton since 2000. Friedman volunteered to participate in this previously federally-funded water quality study of two local tributaries that discharge into the Taunton River. These tributaries are Church Brook and the Cotley River located in the eastern portion of Taunton. We may add the Three Mile River; which is located behind Friedman, to our study program at a later date.

Bugwatch is one major educational activity conducted in our Outdoor Education Program each year. During the fall, our Outdoor Education students capture …

Geomorphic Analysis Of Tidal Creek Networks, Karyn Inez Novakowski, Raymond Torres, L Robert Gardner, George Voulgaris May 2004

Geomorphic Analysis Of Tidal Creek Networks, Karyn Inez Novakowski, Raymond Torres, L Robert Gardner, George Voulgaris

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine if concepts in terrestrial channel network analysis provide insight on intertidal creek network development and to present new metrics for their analysis. We delineated creek network geometry using high-resolution digital images of intertidal marsh near Georgetown, South Carolina. Analyses reveal that intertidal creek networks may be topologically random. Length-area relationships suggest that salt marsh and terrestrial networks have similar scaling properties, although the marsh networks are more elongate than terrestrial networks. To account for recurrent water exchange between creek basins at high tide, we propose that the landscape unit of geomorphic analyses …

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander May 2004

Margaret Cavendish And Scientific Discourse In Seventeenth-Century England, Alisa Curtis Bolander

Theses and Dissertations

Although the natural philosophy of Margaret Cavendish is eclectic and uncustomary, it offers an important critique of contemporary scientific methods, especially mechanism and experimentalism. As presented in Observations upon Experimental Philosophy and Blazing World, Cavendish's natural philosophy incorporates rationalistic and subjective elements, urging contemporary natural philosophers to recognize that pure objectivity is unattainable through any method of inquiry and that reason is essential in making sense and use of scientific observation.

In addition to its scientific implications, Cavendish's three-tiered model of matter presents interesting sociopolitical associations. Through her own use of metaphor and her theoretical fusion of matter and motion, …

Extraterritoriality Of The Sherman Act And Deterrence Of Private International Cartels, John M. Connor May 2004

Extraterritoriality Of The Sherman Act And Deterrence Of Private International Cartels, John M. Connor

ExpressO

This paper argues that the facts in the vitamins cartel support decisions in the 2nd and DC circuits to permit wholly foreign direct buyers of globally cartelized products standing to sue in U.S. courts. Such an interpretation of the Sherman Act is justified by conduct that is essentially linked to the management of successful international cartels, namely, the prevention of geographic arbitrage. This paper shows that the degree of injuries imposed on U.S. consumers could not have occurred were it not for coordinated price increases in countries with weak or nonexistent anticartel laws. Moreover, this paper endeavors to demonstrate that, …

Prevalence Of Parasites In Amphipods Diporeia Spp. From Lakes Michigan And Huron, Usa, Gretchen A. Messick, Robin M. Overstreet, Thomas F. Nalepa, Sue Tyler May 2004

Prevalence Of Parasites In Amphipods Diporeia Spp. From Lakes Michigan And Huron, Usa, Gretchen A. Messick, Robin M. Overstreet, Thomas F. Nalepa, Sue Tyler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Amphipods of Diporeia spp. have declined considerably during the last decade in the Great Lakes. We examined the possibility that disease may be affecting these populations. A histological survey assessed the parasites in species of Diporeia within Lakes Huron and Michigan, USA, and the host response to some of them and to unknown factors. Amphipods were found to have an intranuclear inclusion body, and were hosts to a rickettsia-like organism, fungi, a haplosporidian, a microsporidian, epibiotic ciliates, a gregarine, a cestode, acanthocephalans and nodule formations. Epibiotic ciliates were most common (37% prevalence of infection), but a microsporidian (3.8%), a rickettsia-like …

Fiber Type And Temperature Dependence Of Inorganic Phosphate: Implications For Fatigue, Edward Patrick Debold, H. Dave, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Elevated levels of Pi are thought to cause a substantial proportion of the loss in muscular force and power output during fatigue from intense contractile activity. However, support for this hypothesis is based, in part, on data from skinned single fibers obtained at low temperatures (≤15°C). The effect of high (30 mM) Pi concentration on the contractile function of chemically skinned single fibers was examined at both low (15°C) and high (30°C) temperatures using fibers isolated from rat soleus (type I fibers) and gastrocnemius (type II fibers) muscles. Elevating Pi from 0 to 30 mM at saturating …
