Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig Jordan
Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig Jordan
Internal Medicine Faculty Patents
Primitive or progenitor hematologic cancer cells have been implicated in the early stages and development of leukemia and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders, including acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Interleukin-3 receptor alpha chain (IL-3Rα or CD123) is strongly expressed on progenitor hematologic cancer cells, but is virtually undetectable on normal bone marrow cells. The present invention provides methods of impairing progenitor hematologic cancer (e.g., leukemia and lymphomic) cells by selectively targeting cells expressing CD123. These methods are useful in the detection and treatment of leukemias and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders. Also provided are compounds useful …

Medical conditions are treated by administering a therapeutically effective amount of exo-S-mecamylamine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, substantially free of its exo-R-mecamylamine, said amount being sufficient to ameliorate the medical condition. The medical conditions include substance addiction (involving nicotine, cocaine, alcohol, amphetamine, opiate, other psychostimulant and a combination thereof), Tourette's Syndrome, and neuropsychiatric disorders (such as bipolar disorder, depression, an anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, a seizure disorder, Parkinson's disease and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
A Stable Isotopic Examination Of Particulate Organic Matter During Karenia Brevis Blooms On The Central West Florida Shelf: Hints At Nitrogen Sources In Oligotrophic Waters, Julie Ann Havens
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Blooms of the red tide dinoflagellate Karenia brevis occur annually on the west Florida shelf. In the late summer/early fall months, background concentrations increase from 103 cells L-1 to excesses of 106 cells L-1. Blooms are most common between Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, and may be maintained for months. The region’s hydrography may play a role in the initiation, maintenance and termination of blooms.
The west Florida shelf is depauperate in inorganic nutrients. Inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus rarely exceed the limits of detection, whereas dissolved organic nitrogen is often present at concentrations of 15 …
Model Adjustments For Individual Patients Using Rocuronium, Rose Mills
Model Adjustments For Individual Patients Using Rocuronium, Rose Mills
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Neuromuscular blocking agents are used in the operating room to allow safe intubation and prevent dangerous movement during surgery. Six patients scheduled for laparoscopic surgery were monitored throughout the operation. We then adjusted the pharmacodynamic model parameters to better fit individual patient responses. Adjusting the models as the patient began to recover provided significantly better prediction of recovery from rocuronium when adjusted at a train-of-four ratio of 0.3. When these predictions are displayed to an anesthesiologist, or an astronaut who may be less trained in anesthesia, they may help in determining if another bolus of rocuronium or a reversal agent …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Registered Underground Baiting Products For Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia Rufa) Control , Wendy M. Arjo, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) is a fossorialrodent species endemic to the Pacific Northwest and portions of California. This herbivore inflicts millions of dollars of damage annually to forest seedling plantations. Currently, extensive trapping prior to planting is the most reliable method for reducing damage. With increasing restrictions placed on trapping, forest resource managers need alternative tools to minimize forest damage. This study assessed the potential of four toxicants registered for underground use to controlmountain beaver; zinc phosphide, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and strychnine. Zinc phosphide and strychnine are acute toxicants, whereas diphacinone and chlorophacinone are anticoagulants. Anticoagulants prevent the recycling of …

Particles In The Great Pinatubo Volcanic Cloud Of June 1991:The Role Of Ice, Song Guo, William I. Rose, Gregg J. S. Bluth, M. I. Watson
Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications
Pinatubo's 15 June 1991 eruption was Earth's largest of the last 25 years, and it formed a substantial volcanic cloud. We present results of analysis of satellite-based infrared remote sensing using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder/High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder/2 (TOVS/HIRS/2) sensors, during the first few days of atmospheric residence of the Pinatubo volcanic cloud, as it drifted from the Philippines toward Africa. An SO2-rich upper (25 km) portion drifted westward slightly faster than an ash-rich lower (22 km) part, though uncertainty exists due to difficulty in precisely locating the ash cloud. …

Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of my PhD study was to develop and characterize new methods and sensors based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for bioanalysis. Chapter 3 describes the use of FRET between donor fluorophores and acceptor labeled murine macrophage cells. FRET microscopy was used to determine whether the donor molecules truly permeate through the cell membrane or only adsorb to the cell surface. This method was found to be partially successful since the donor red tail fluorescence overlapped with the sensitized acceptor fluorescence and led to false reading of FRET. We found that is easier to monitor delivery of acceptor …

Effects Of Size And Exposure To Predation Threat On Mating Behavior And Predation Response In Male Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Alison Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Trade offs between mating and predator avoidance advantages were studied in the western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis: Poeciliidae). When tested with green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) predators, larger male G. affinis were found to have a higher number of escapes compared to smaller males. Smaller males were captured more often than larger males in groups of six and in both complex and simple habitat types. Large males, on average, were found to attempt more matings and spend a larger proportion of time near the female than smaller males. When trials with predators were compared to trials without predators, large males decreased mating …

Water Quality Study And Plume Behavior Modeling For Lake Pontchartrain At The Mouth Of The Tchefuncte River, Jeimmy C. Leal Castellano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Over the last several decades, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin has been impacted by the presence of high levels of Fecal Coliform bacteria following periods of rainfall. This is a potential problem for recreational uses of the area. In 2003 a field sampling study was initiated in the north shore area of the Lake at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. The objectives were to determine the water quality in the area and to simulate the plume patterns from the Tchefuncte River. Twenty eight stations at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River, and a station at the Madisonville Bridge were selected …
Technical And Economic Feasibility Considerations Of Alternative Energy Distributed Generation, Vishwanatha Raju Brahmandhabheri
Technical And Economic Feasibility Considerations Of Alternative Energy Distributed Generation, Vishwanatha Raju Brahmandhabheri
Theses and Dissertations
The pressing needs for cost effective electric power that provides both high reliability and high quality is creating an opportunity for alternative energy distributed generation (DG). To determine the economic and technical feasibility of such alternative energy distributed generation facilities, electric power customers must understand their electric usage patterns, economic considerations, local alternative fuel supplies and available DG technologies. This thesis discusses the economic and technical feasibility of establishing a distributed generation installation. As a part of technical feasibility, an evaluation has been done to compare DG size and location impact on the operation of the I 13 node test …
Outage Management Via Powerline Communication Based Automated Meter Reading Systems, Thirupathi Venganti
Outage Management Via Powerline Communication Based Automated Meter Reading Systems, Thirupathi Venganti
Theses and Dissertations
In many outage management systems, customer trouble calls have been used as the primary source of outages for distribution level outages. However the information from the trouble calls is not completely reliable as they lead to problems like okay-on-arrival reports, over escalation and extended outage times for the customers. But with the recent developments in communication and information technologies, utilities started to adopt Automated Meter Reading systems for their operational needs. In this thesis, an algorithm is developed and implemented that makes efficient use information available from the customers and powerline communication based AMR systems for outages. The work has …

Third Herring Brook Watershed
Watershed Access Lab Projects
Six freshman students from Norwell High School examined the Third Herring Brook Watershed during the spring of 2004. The students were split into three groups, each group taking a different topic. One set studied Nitrate and Phosphorus levels, another studied temperature, pH and physical characteristics of the watershed, while the third performed Fecal coliform tests. All levels were determined to be acceptable, although there is evidence that the contamination levels between site 1 (upstream) and site 2 (downstream) increase, possibly due to the stream passing by athletic fields, high school sewage treatment and a commercial use property.
Samples were sent …
