Primary Production And Nutrient Dynamics Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Taekeun Rho May 2004

Primary Production And Nutrient Dynamics Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Taekeun Rho

Marine Biology

Understanding the relationships between the distributions of organisms and oceanographic conditions was one of the major goals of the Southeastern Bering Sea Carrying Capacity (SEBSCC) study. As a part of SEBSCC, this study focused on the response of nutrients and primary production to the variations of physical conditions, the general distribution of primary production, and the dynamics of phytoplankton growth, and nutrient utilization over the middle shelf and shelf break regions. The concentration of nutrients and primary productivity were measured over the shelf during 1997-1999. Shipboard nutrient and iron addition experiments were conducted over the middle shelf and shelf break …

Effectiveness Of Twenty, Twenty-Five Diazacholesterol, Avian Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone, And Chicken Riboflavin Carrier Protein For Inhibiting Reproduction In Coturnix Quail, C.A. Yoder, W.F. Andelt, L.A. Miller, J.J. Johnston, M.J. Goodall

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Contraception may provide a useful nonlethal management tool when it is desirable to reduce populations of birds. We tested the efficacy of 20,25 diazacholesterol, and immunization with avian gonadotropin-releasing hormone (AGnRH-I) and chicken riboflavin carrier protein (cRCP) as contraceptives and investigated their modes of action in Coturnix quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Females that were paired with males treated with 20,25 diazacholesterol produced lower percentages of eggs that were fertile and hatched. Females treated with 20,25 diazacholesterol and paired with control males laid fewer eggs, and lower percentages of their eggs were fertile and hatched. Treatment with 20,25 diazacholesterol …

Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg May 2004

Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg

Biological Sciences

We isolated luminous bacteria from drying chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, reported by Alaska native fishermen to be 'glowing in the dark.' The salmon were harvested for subsistence use from the Yukon River, Alaska. We identified our luminous bacterial isolates as Photobacterium phosphoreum based on nutritional versatility, and 16S rDNA and luxA gene sequences. P. phosphoreum has previously only been isolated from the marine environment. We tested whether our strains, isolated from fish harvested in freshwater, represent cold-adapted, freshwater-tolerant strains of P. phosphoreum. We also analyzed lux operon composition and organization, and examined the 5' promoter region of the lux operon …

Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery May 2004

Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery

Fisheries

Country of origin provides the basis for allocating harvests of Yukon River chum salmon. The genetic divergence among Yukon River chum salmon populations adjacent to the international border as revealed by allozyme and micro satellite variation is insufficient to determine the country of origin of returning fish using mixed-stock analysis (MSA). Consequently, we investigated the resolution provided by alternative genetic markers in an attempt to detect levels of divergence that would be sufficient for MSA. We analyzed 10 Yukon River chum salmon populations for variation at 30 variable amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction …

Variation Of Agonistic Behavior And Morphology Among Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Of Hatchery, Wild, And Hybrid Origin Under Common Rearing Conditions, Maria Elena Lang Wessel May 2004

Variation Of Agonistic Behavior And Morphology Among Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Of Hatchery, Wild, And Hybrid Origin Under Common Rearing Conditions, Maria Elena Lang Wessel

Fisheries

Hatcheries play an important role in the enhancement of Pacific salmon (genus Oncorhynchus) as a resource, but genetic and phenotypic divergence trom wild populations may occur as a result of founder effects, genetic drift and/or domestication. In this study, agonistic behavior, ability to establish dominance, and morphology were compared among juveniles of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) that have experienced five generations of hatchery ranching culture, juveniles derived trom the wild founding stock, and second generation hybrids of the two lines. The parent generation of all lines was cultured in the same hatchery environment as the juveniles tested. Behavioral observations were …

Effects Of Inbreeding And Family Origin On Size Of Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Fry, Cara J. Rodgveller May 2004

Effects Of Inbreeding And Family Origin On Size Of Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Fry, Cara J. Rodgveller

Fisheries

We cultured separate lines of chinook salmon fry of Chickamin River, Southeast Alaska, ancestry in seven common garden enclosures. A parentage analysis based on variation of microsatellite alleles showed that within these lines seven brother sister matings created 35 inbred fish from 7 families (F = 0.25) and 37 outbred fish resulted from 10 matings between segregated lines. Outbred and inbred fish did not differ in length (P = 0.42), weight (P = 0.86), or condition factor (P = 0.16). There was significant variation among families for length (P = 0.01) and weight (P <0.01), but not for condition factor (P = 0.48). Because variation among families can be large, it can potentially confound the effects for which a study was designed. To avoid drawing improper conclusions, studies should estimate the amount of variation that can be attributed to family origin, or be certain that many families are sampled.

Antagonistic Allies: Bridging The Abyss Between Nietzsche And Democracy, Melinda Rosenberg May 2004

Antagonistic Allies: Bridging The Abyss Between Nietzsche And Democracy, Melinda Rosenberg

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the often tumultuous relationship between Friedrich Nietzsche and democracy. Nietzsche has always had an antipathy towards democracy. Nietzsche has claimed that democracy espouses a will to equality which levels the greatest men along with the most average men. For Nietzsche, his Ubermenschen must emerge from the muddle of mediocrity and similitude in order to set themselves apart from the herd. The herd is more than happy to live in a democratic society since no one will be rendered better or greater than anyone else.

I argue that Nietzsche does not realize democracy's …

Vegetation Reconstruction And Climate Evolution Of Lake Dood, Darhad Basin, Northern Mongolia, Over The Past 4,500 Years, Yiming Wang May 2004

Vegetation Reconstruction And Climate Evolution Of Lake Dood, Darhad Basin, Northern Mongolia, Over The Past 4,500 Years, Yiming Wang

Geosciences

A semi-quantitative pollen index and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen are used to reconstruct late Holocene changes in moisture availability in the Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia. Palynomorphs extracted from cores of lake Dood indicate that the surrounding Darhad Basin was much wetter at 4,200 cal. yrs B.P. Beginning at 2,900 cal. yrs B.P., humidity in the Darhad Basin decreased until 300 cal. yrs B.P. Humidity and warmth returned briefly during the Medieval Warm Epoch, from 1,370 to 930 cal yrs B.P. (AD. 580 to 892). Increasing proportions of forest to steppe pollen types suggests a response to warmer summer …

Solving The Punitive Damage Mismatch, Ari Behar May 2004

Solving The Punitive Damage Mismatch, Ari Behar

ExpressO

There are several reasons underlying the system of punitive damages. Application of these reasons to cases yields differing results. The reasons fall into two categories: those that support awarding additional damages to the plaintiff and those that support extracting more damages from the defendant. When the reasons in favor of extraction exceed those in favor of award, the award should be split between the plaintiff and a fund. This fund should be used to supplement awards when the reasons favoring award exceed those favoring extraction.

Drawing Lines In The Sand: Even Skipped Et Al. And Parasegment Boundaries., James B. Jaynes, Miki Fujioka

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The pair-rule segmentation gene even skipped (eve) is required to activate engrailed stripes and to organize odd-numbered parasegments (PSs). The protein product Eve has been shown to be an active repressor of transcription, and recent models for Eve function suggest that activation of engrailed is indirect, but these models have not been fully tested. Here we identify the forkhead domain transcription factor Sloppy-paired as the key intermediate in the initial activation of engrailed by Eve in odd-numbered parasegments. We also analyze the roles of the transcription factors Runt and Odd-skipped in this process. Detailed analysis of engrailed and pair-rule gene …
