The Spell Of Speech, Bruno Ruviaro Jun 2004

The Spell Of Speech, Bruno Ruviaro

Music

This text is a complement to the musical composition The Spell of Speech, a piece for actress, electro-acoustic sounds and live-electronics composed in 2004 as part of the requirements to conclude the Master’s degree in Electro-Acoustic Music at Dartmouth College. The core of this research is the relationship between speech and music composition. The first chapter presents a theoretical framework comprising evolutionary musicology and music cognition. The second chapter contains a historical survey of electro-acoustic music in which human voice plays a fundamental role. Finally, the third chapter analyzes the composition The Spell of Speech, presenting the main techniques used …

Nebraska’S Informal Economy, Marilyn R. Schlake Jun 2004

Nebraska’S Informal Economy, Marilyn R. Schlake

Cornhusker Economics

Any measurement of Nebraska’s informal economy is questionable at best, given the nature of the businesses that comprise this economic segment. Economists estimate the size of the nations informal economy as a percentage of the GNP to range from 4.4 percent to 27 percent, with most estimates falling around 10 percent. If this figure holds true for Nebraska, we can measure Nebraska’s informal economy to be $5.6 million or 10 percent of Nebraska’s 2001 Gross State Product of $56,967 million.

Adaptation Of The State Trait Anxiety Inventory In Arabic: A Comparison With The American Stai, Qutayba A. Abdullatif Jun 2004

Adaptation Of The State Trait Anxiety Inventory In Arabic: A Comparison With The American Stai, Qutayba A. Abdullatif

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main goal of the present study was to develop an Arabic adaptation of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI, Form Y, Spielberger, 1983). In addition, cultural and linguistic influences on the experience and expression of anxiety were assessed. The American STAI and fifty initial Arabic items were administered to 286 university students at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. The American STAI was also administered to 336 university students at the University of South Florida.

Item and factor analyses were conducted on responses of the calibration sample to obtain the final set of Arabic items, which was validated using …

The Lessons Stem Cells Provide Vis-À-Vis Patents: Working Towards An International/Universal Patent Regime. , Charles F. Hall Jun 2004

The Lessons Stem Cells Provide Vis-À-Vis Patents: Working Towards An International/Universal Patent Regime. , Charles F. Hall

ExpressO

Biotechnology research has much to promise human society. Beyond the obvious benefits of being able to clone rare animal species or potentially to revitalize extinct species , there are many practical applications that are beneficial to human society directly. Rare blood types might be created from specialized stem cells. The tragedies of Christopher Reeve and others like him who have suffered paralysis from spinal cord trauma may be reversible by using stem cells to replenish damaged and severed nerve cells in the spinal column. The dire shortage of organs for those needing transplants can be reduced by creating an organ …

First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain Jun 2004

Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: There are differences in the literature regarding outcomes of premature small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and appropriate-for gestational-age (AGA) infants, possibly due to failure to take into account gestational age at birth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare mortality and respiratory morbidity of SGA and AGA premature newborn infants.

DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospective study was done of the 2,487 infants born without congenital anomalies at

RESULTS: Controlling for GA, premature SGA infants were at a higher risk for mortality (Odds ratio 3.1, P = 0.001) and at lower risk of respiratory distress syndrome (OR = 0.71, p = 0.02) than AGA infants. However multivariate logistic regression …

Moving From Pattern To Process: Coexistence Mechanisms Under Intermediate Disturbance Regimes, Katriona Shea, Stephen H. Roxburgh, Emily Rauschert

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Coexistence mechanisms that require environmental variation to operate contribute importantly to the maintenance of biodiversity. One famous hypothesis of diversity maintenance under disturbance is the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH). The IDH proposes patterns of peaked diversity under intermediate disturbance regimes, based on a tension between competitively superior species and species which can rapidly colonize following disturbance. We review the literature, and describe recent research that suggests that more than one underlying mechanism can generate this unimodal diversity pattern in disturbed environments. Several exciting emerging research areas are identified, including interactions between disturbance types, operation of the IDH in multi-trophic systems, …
