Bayesian Herders: Optimistic Updating Of Rainfall Beliefs In Response To External Forecasts, Travis J. Lybbert, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak, Winnie Luseno Jun 2004

Bayesian Herders: Optimistic Updating Of Rainfall Beliefs In Response To External Forecasts, Travis J. Lybbert, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak, Winnie Luseno

Economics - All Scholarship

Temporal climate risk weighs heavily on many of the world's poor. Model based climate forecasts could benefit such populations, provided recipients use forecast information to update climate expectations. We test whether pastoralists in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya update their expectations in response to forecast information and find that they indeed do, albeit with a systematic bias towards optimism. In their systematic optimism, these pastoralists are remarkably like Wall Street's financial analysts and stockbrokers. If climate forecasts have limited value to these pastoralists, it is due to the flexibility of their livelihood rather than an inability to process forecast information.

Ghana's Vanishing Past: Development, Antiquities, And The Destruction Of The Archaeological Record, Benjamin W. Kankpeyeng, Christopher R. Decorse

Anthropology - All Scholarship

Ghana's past is being destroyed at a rapid rate. Although the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board has in some instances successfully intervened to stop the illicit trading of antiquities, the destruction of archaeological sites as a consequence of development over the past two decades has been staggering and the pace is accelerating. The potential of the legislation that established the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and empowered it to manage and preserve the country's archaeological past has not been realized. The lack of political action, limited relevant public education, insufficient funding, and the poverty of the majority of the Ghanaian …

Spiders In African Children's Stories, Dorothy N. Bowen

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The first literature that many American children come into contact with consists of Mother Goose rhymes. One of the very familiar ones is "Little Miss Muffet."Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, Eating her curds and whey; When along came a spider, who sat down beside her, And frightened Miss Muffet away.

Nitric Oxide Is Involved In Growth Regulation And Re-Orientation Of Pollen Tubes, Ana Margarida Prado, D. M. Porterfield, José A. Feijó Jun 2004

Nitric Oxide Is Involved In Growth Regulation And Re-Orientation Of Pollen Tubes, Ana Margarida Prado, D. M. Porterfield, José A. Feijó

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nitric oxide (NO) controls diverse functions in many cells and organs of animals. It is also produced in plants and has a variety of effects, but little is known about their underlying mechanisms. in the present study, we have discovered a role for NO in the regulation of pollen tube growth, a fast tip-growing cellular system. Pollen tubes must be precisely oriented inside the anatomically complex female ovary in order to deliver sperm. We hypothesized that NO could play a role in this guidance and tested this hypothesis by challenging the growth of pollen tubes with an external NO point …

Microcredit In Rural Bangladesh: Is It Reaching The Poorest?, Dipankar Datta Jun 2004

Microcredit In Rural Bangladesh: Is It Reaching The Poorest?, Dipankar Datta

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

During the last decade microcredit has exploded in Bangladesh, as well as in a large part of the third world. Empirical studies give strong evidence that microcredit has had positive effects on two vital areas of national development; namely, the alleviation of poverty and the empowerment of women. Despite these positive impacts, some critics question the efficacy of microcredit in reaching the extreme poor. Some argue that while microcredit has contributed positively to the well-being of the poor in general, it has failed to reach the poorest of the poor. This paper explores the reasons why microcredit programs rarely reach …

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal Jun 2004

Environmental Protection And Microenterprise Development In The Developing World: A Model Based On The Latin American Experience, Mark D. Wenner, Norman Wright, Abhishek Lal

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Microenterprises constitute the vast majority of business firms in low- and middle-income developing countries. In Latin America, the sector contributes significantly to employment and gross domestic product. Recently, the expansion of microlending programs has been viewed as an effective means of developing the microenterprise sector and alleviating poverty. However, the nexus between microenterprise development and environmental degradation has remained largely unexplored. It is suspected that the pervasive informality of the microenterprise sector, its sheer size, and the high incidence of poverty in the sector contribute to cumulative environmental degradation and low standards of occupational safety. This paper highlights commonly observed …

Reflections On The Historical Origins And Economic Structure Of The Law Merchant, Richard A. Epstein Jun 2004

Reflections On The Historical Origins And Economic Structure Of The Law Merchant, Richard A. Epstein

Chicago Journal of International Law

The purpose of this short essay is to make some introductory remarks to frame the debate about the historical evolution and economic structure of the Law Merchant. For these purposes the capitalization of the phrase should not mislead, for by the Law Merchant I mean nothing more pretentious than the commercial law rules-contractual, customary, and statutory-that govern transactions among merchants. It includes the rules governing sale, credit, insurance, transportation, and, probably, partnership. In approaching so salient a topic, it comes as something of a shock to realize that the first order of business in this venerable area is the extensive …

An Evaluation Of The Us High Production Volume (Hpv) Chemical-Testing Programme: A Study In (Ir)Relevance, Redundancy And Retro Thinking, Andrew Nicholson, Jessica Sandler, Troy Seidle Jun 2004

An Evaluation Of The Us High Production Volume (Hpv) Chemical-Testing Programme: A Study In (Ir)Relevance, Redundancy And Retro Thinking, Andrew Nicholson, Jessica Sandler, Troy Seidle

Experimentation Collection

Under the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge Programme, chemical companies have volunteered to conduct screening-level toxicity tests on approximately 2800 widely-used industrial chemicals. Participating companies are committed to providing available toxicity information to the EPA and presenting testing proposals for review by the EPA and posting on the EPA Web site as public information. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and a coalition of animal protection organisations have reviewed all the test plans submitted by the participating chemical companies for compliance with the original HPV framework, as well as with animal welfare guidelines …

Ideology Masquerading As Science: The Case Of Endocrine Disrupter Screening Programmes, Troy Seidle Jun 2004

Ideology Masquerading As Science: The Case Of Endocrine Disrupter Screening Programmes, Troy Seidle

Experimentation Collection

The global move to develop novel testing methods and strategies to identify suspected endocrine disrupting chemicals offers a unique opportunity to move away from traditional animal testing paradigms in this new area of regulatory concern. Regrettably, the programmes under development, both in the USA and internationally through the OECD, have thus far failed to consider in vitro and other nonanimal test methods as more than “pre-screening” or “priority-setting” tools in a larger, animal-based testing strategy. Validation efforts to date have focused almost exclusively on the modification of existing animal tests to detect “endocrine effects”, with no demonstrable effort to promote …

Animal Model Research: The Apples And Oranges Quandary, Kenneth J. Shapiro Jun 2004

Animal Model Research: The Apples And Oranges Quandary, Kenneth J. Shapiro

Experimentation Collection

In this paper, I explore the premises underlying the problem of the evaluation of animal models. I argue that the presence of similarities and differences between the model and the modelled, although historically and currently a dominant antinomy framing evaluation, is not a bottom-line consideration. What is critical is 1) whether we learn and 2) whether we improve treatment through the animal model research. Similarity between model and modelled and the closely related concept of validity are not coterminus with these critical evaluative measures. In fact, differences between the model and modelled also can provide impetus to new understanding and …

The Use Of Turnips For Extending The Grazing Season, Alexander Smart, Peter Jeranyama, Vance Owens Jun 2004

The Use Of Turnips For Extending The Grazing Season, Alexander Smart, Peter Jeranyama, Vance Owens

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The use of short-season crops, such as turnips, is effective for extending the grazing season, following the harvest of small grains. A system of double cropping works particularly well if the intent is to provide a break in crop rotation. Turnips, which are in the brassica family, are fast growing and tolerate cold temperatures. Therefore, they are good for providing high quality and quantity forage for grazing livestock well into the fall (Figure 1).

Use Of By-Products In Growing Dairy Heifer Diets, K. F. Kalscheur, A. D. Garcia Jun 2004

Use Of By-Products In Growing Dairy Heifer Diets, K. F. Kalscheur, A. D. Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The goals of a heifer-feeding program are to reach a target freshening weight by 24 months of age or less, to improve feed efficiency and reduce costs, and to do this while allowing the animals to express their full genetic potential for milk production. Feed costs remain the single largest expense in raising dairy heifers; therefore, a feed cost reduction that does not sacrifice production improves net income. Feed costs may be reduced by the use of locally available by-product feeds. Nutritional composition of by-product feeds, however, may vary from the animal’s nutritional requirements, making the incorporation of such feeds …

The Pseudomonas Syringae Hopptov Protein Is Secreted In Culture And Translocated Into Plant Cells Via The Type Iii Protein Secretion System In A Manner Dependent On The Shcv Type Iii Chaperone, Misty D. Wehling, Ming Guo, Zheng Qing Fu, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae depends on a type III protein secretion system and the effector proteins that it translocates into plant cells to cause disease and to elicit the defense-associated hypersensitive response on resistant plants. The availability of the P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000 genome sequence has resulted in the identification of many novel effectors. We identified the hopPtoV effector gene on the basis of its location next to a candidate type III chaperone (TTC) gene, shcV, and within a pathogenicity island in the DC3000 chromosome. A DC3000 mutant lacking ShcV was unable to secrete detectable amounts …

Nhep Monitoring Plan 2004, Version 4- 6/30/04, Trowbridge, P, Phil Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

The NHEP Management Plan presents a series of goals, objectives, and specific actions designed to improve, protect, and enhance the environmental quality of the state’s estuaries, and outlines a process for implementing the Plan’s most critical actions (NHEP, 2000). Measuring the effectiveness of these actions in achieving NHEP goals is an essential part of implementation that will be achieved through a suite of environmental and administrative indicators. This Monitoring Plan describes the methods and data for the indicators that will be used to answer the following question accurately and unambiguously: Are the goals and objectives of the Management Plan being …
