Occupational Self-Direction, Intellectual Functioning, And Self-Directed Orientation In Older Workers: Findings And Implications For Individuals And Societies, Gary Oates, Carmi Schooler, Mesfin Samuel Mulatu
Sociology Faculty Publications
Using data from 1994-95 third-wave interviews, this study tests whether Kohn and Schooler's findings ( based on 1964 and 1974 interviews) that self-directed occupational conditions increase intellectual functioning and self-directed orientations hold when the respondents are 20 years older. Results confirm that even late in life self-directedness of work continues to affect intellectual functioning and self-directedness of orientation. These psychological characteristics, in turn, affect social-structural position in ways that increase disparities between the advantaged and disadvantaged. From a historical and societal perspective, the findings suggest that the occupational self-directedness of a society's workers may affect its social norms, values, and …
A Review Of Diseases Found In Cabbage And The Effects Of Ultraviolet -B On Black Rot., Dameion J. Crook
A Review Of Diseases Found In Cabbage And The Effects Of Ultraviolet -B On Black Rot., Dameion J. Crook
Theses (Pre-2016)
The objective of this study is to determine the effects of elevated UV-B (320 - 290 run) light on Xanthomonas campestris. Xanthomonas campestris is a bacterium that causes a disease commonly known as Black Rot. This disease affects crucifers a large variety of vegetable crops. The disease is easily recognized by the presence of yellow, V-shaped lesions extending inward from the margin of the leaf. The disease progresses, the yellow lesions tum brown and the tissue dies. Veins darken and the mid-rib of leaves tum black within in the infected area. The veins discoloration progresses toward the base of the …

The Free Movement Of Goods Within An Ec-Wide Market: Still A Work In Progress, Franz Leidenmühler
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
Right now, somewhere on the territory of a Member State of the European Community, a lorry carrying strawberries from another EC country is attacked by a group of masked men, who force the conductor off the road and render tons of strawberries unusable. Is it an ordinary criminal act to be treated within national criminal law or an invocation of the free movement of goods guaranteed by EC law? Not long ago, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in a landmark judgment that the free movement of goods requires the Member States to act against such private conduct that …

Graduate Research Papers
When educators, families, and communities work together, schools get better. As a result, students get the high quality education that they need to lead productive lives. Thirty years of research confirms that family development is a powerful influence on children's achievement in school (Eagle, 1989: Henderson & Berla, 1994: U.S. Department of Education; Ziegler, 1987). When families are involved in their children's education, children earn higher grades and receive higher scores on tests, attend school more regularly, complete more homework, demonstrate more positive attitudes and behaviors, graduate from high school at higher rates and are more likely to enroll in …

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Oil: Canadian And Gwich'in Indian Legal Responses To 1002 Area Development, Michael T. Delcomyn
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska contains an area commonly referred to as the 1002 area. This area contains millions barrels of oil but is currently protected from oil development by Congress. Many groups support opening the 1002 area for development, including the state of Alaska and the Bush administration. Those opposing any potential oil development include the Canadian government and the Gwich'in Indians. Were Congress to open the 1002 area for development, Canada and the Gwich'in would probably take legal action to prevent potential harms associated with the drilling. Both Canada and the Gwich 'in are concerned primarily …
Law, Terrorism, And Social Movements: The Tension Between Politics And Security In Germany's Anti-Terrorism Legislation, Shawn Boyne
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article explores Germany's approach to combating terrorism from the late 1960s to the 1980s, emphasizing the interplay between security measures and civil liberties. It argues that political power struggles, rather than the terrorist threat itself, often drove antiterrorism legislation. The analysis highlights how laws such as the Berufsverbot and criminal code revisions were used to suppress dissent, leading to public backlash and eventual reforms. In contrast to the U.S., which framed its post-9/11 response as war, Germany maintained judicial oversight and avoided suspending constitutional rights. Public opinion played a pivotal role in shaping these policies, ultimately fostering a stronger …

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 on feedlot profits. Fecal samples from 711 feedlot pens in 73 feedlots in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas were tested for E. coli 0157:H7. Average daily gain and feed-to-gain ratios were computed for each feedlot pen, and managers from each feedlot provided information on various feedlot management practices. Cattle performance and E. coli 0157:H7 prevalence are both affected by feedlot management practices. The indirect effect of E. coli 0157:H7 on potential feedlot profits was determined by measuring the effects of management practices on E. coli 0157:H7 …

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
This Term, the Supreme Court addressed several important questions regarding the role of law and legal institutions in the “war on terrorism.” Specifically, the Court issued important rulings concerning (1) the scope of the President’s war powers; (2) the rights of enemy combatants; and (3) the proper role of courts in time of war. Much remains unresolved by the Court’s opinions, but several basic propositions about the legal concept of “war” are reaffirmed. Presidents enjoy some extraordinary powers in time of war; the role of the judiciary is diminished in some important respects (but not extinguished) in time of war; …

A Theoretical Analysis Of Long-Term Bisphosphonate Effects On Trabecular Bone Volume And Microdamage, Jeffry S. Nyman, Oscar C. Yeh, Scott J. Hazelwood, R. Bruce Martin
Biomedical Engineering
Bisphosphonates increase bone mass and reduce fracture risk, but their anti-resorptive action may lead to increases in fatigue microdamage. To investigate how bisphosphonate effects influence changes in bone volume and microdamage in the long term, a strain-adaptive model of bone remodeling and microdamage balance was developed for a continuum-level volume of postmenopausal trabecular bone by invoking Frost's mechanostat hypothesis. Both disuse and fatigue microdamage were assumed to stimulate the activation frequency of basic multicellular units (BMUs) such that bone remodeling served to remove excess bone mass and microdamage. Bisphosphonate effects were simulated as follows: low, intermediate, high, or complete suppression …
