Schizophrenics, Cyborgs And The Pitfalls Of Posthumanism, Angela Woods Jul 2004

Schizophrenics, Cyborgs And The Pitfalls Of Posthumanism, Angela Woods

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In Schizophrenics, Cyborgs and the Pitfalls of Posthumanism, Angela Woods invites us to revisit two canonical analyses of the postmodern: Fredric Jameson's Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism and Donna Haraway's A Manifesto for Cyborgs: Science, Technology and Socialist Feminism in the 1980s. Jameson and Haraway introduced to contemporary cultural criticism two posthumanist icons: the schizophrenic, a pathologized victim of postmodernity, and the cyborg, a vision of strategic posthuman subjectivity. In her timely and critical analysis of these articles, Woods challenges the established notion of an oppositional relationship between the schizophrenic and the cyborg. She turns …

Toward A Posthuman Ethics, Dongshin Yi Jul 2004

Toward A Posthuman Ethics, Dongshin Yi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editor's Introduction]

Setting a posthuman ethics as a goal toward which the collaboration of posthumanism and ethics must move, Yi in his essay, Toward a Posthuman Ethics, points out that the collaboration is detained because current debates on the cyborg harbor on the question of representations and consider how political, social and cultural problems of the human are reconfigured, and possibly resolved, by the cyborg. Thus, the debates are bound to be retrospective in approach and circular in direction, as they fail to recognize new possibilities that the cyborg may present. Arguing that the failure indicates the cyborg is being …

X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism, Geoff Klock Jul 2004

X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism, Geoff Klock

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

Continuing his work in How to Read Superhero Comics and Why Geoff Klock, in “X-Men, Emerson, Gnosticism,” argues that two writers of the superhero comic book the X-Men suggest a whole new definition of the Post-Human, an alternative to what Hayles, Haraway, and Moravec have to offer. He begins by connecting a moment in Mark Millar’s Ultimate X-Men with a passage in Ralph Waldo Emerson: an ancient heretical second-century sect of Christianity called Gnosticism is the common factor. Klock argues that Millar’s X-Men incorporates Gnosticism’s radical notion of subjectivity into its Post-Human narrative, but not without cost: Millar’s …

Sadb Is Required For The Transition From Reversible To Irreversible Attachment During Biofilm Formation By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pa14, Nicky C. Caiazza, George A. O'Toole Jul 2004

Sadb Is Required For The Transition From Reversible To Irreversible Attachment During Biofilm Formation By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pa14, Nicky C. Caiazza, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Current models of biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa propose that (i) planktonic cells become surface associated in a monolayer, (ii) surface-associated cells form microcolonies by clonal growth and/or aggregation, (iii) microcolonies transition to a mature biofilm comprised of exopolysaccharide-encased macrocolonies, and (iv) cells exit the mature biofilm and reenter the planktonic state. Here we report a new class of P. aeruginosa biofilm mutant that defines the transition from reversible to irreversible attachment and is thus required for monolayer formation. The transposon insertion carried by the sadB199 mutant was mapped to open reading frame PA5346 of P. aeruginosa PA14 and encodes …

The Smugglers' Landscape: Geography, Route Selection And The Global Heroin Trade, James Dallis Medler Jul 2004

The Smugglers' Landscape: Geography, Route Selection And The Global Heroin Trade, James Dallis Medler

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This study focuses on transnational smuggling, and puts forth an analytical framework from the smugglers' perspective with respect to route selection, focusing primarily on aspects of economic, political, and human geography. It is predicated on three interconnected decision-making domains that constitute the smuggler's operational landscape, namely access, risk and connectivity, which interact to drive the smugglers' perceptions of route attractiveness. The first two domains operate reciprocally, primarily at the national level of analysis, and together both shape and are shaped by the third at the transnational level to form a feedback loop. With respect to connectivity, the convention of the …

Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century, Karl M. Lorenz Jul 2004

Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century, Karl M. Lorenz

Education Faculty Publications

The paper discusses the ideas of Rui Barbosa on the importance of teaching science in the primary schools of nineteenth-century Brazil. Barbosa was one of the great parliamentarians of his time and one of Brazil’s most vocal advocates of educational reform in the nineteenth century. In 1882, Barbosa was directed to provide a written assessment of the1878 educational reform of Minister Leonçio de Carvalho. In the document that resulted, Barbosa states his rationale for why and how the natural sciences should be taught in the primary school. This paper relates Barbosa’s ideas on science teaching and argues that he was …

The Nonprofit Hospital: A Call For New National Guidance Requiring Minimum Annual Charity Care To Qualify For Federal Tax Exemption, Gabriel O. Aitsebaomo

Campbell Law Review

This article begins with an examination of the origin of the federal tax exemption of the tax-exempt hospital, the current statutory frame-work for federal tax exemption, and the community benefits standard. Next, the article discusses the rationale for the exemption and the regulatory changes in the standards of exemption that paved the way for the current movement away from charity care by the tax-exempt hospital and the need for new national guidance. Thereafter, the article discusses some state initiatives aimed at making the tax-exempt hospital more accountable. Finally, the article recommends that the Internal Revenue Service (the "Service") issue a …

Genetic Divergence Among Tomato Leafminer Populations Based On Aflp Analysis, Fábio Akiyoshi Suinaga, Vicente Wagner Dias Casali, Marcelo Picanço, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The objective of this work was to determine the genetic differences among eight Brazilian populations of the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), from the states of Espírito Santo (Santa Tereza), Goiás (Goianápolis), Minas Gerais (Uberlândia and Viçosa), Pernambuco (Camocim de São Félix), Rio de Janeiro (São João da Barra) and São Paulo (Paulínia and Sumaré), using the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique. Fifteen combinations of EcoRI and MseI primers were used to assess divergence among populations. The data were analyzed using unweighted pair-group method, based on arithmetic averages (UPGMA) bootstrap analysis and principal coordinate analysis. Using a …

Prion Infection Of Skeletal Muscle Cells And Papillae In The Tongue, Ellyn R. Mulcahy, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard Bessen Jul 2004

Prion Infection Of Skeletal Muscle Cells And Papillae In The Tongue, Ellyn R. Mulcahy, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard Bessen

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The presence of the prion agent in skeletal muscle is thought to be due to the infection of nerve fibers located within the muscle. We report here that the pathological isoform of the prion protein, PrPSc, accumulates within skeletal muscle cells, in addition to axons, in the tongue of hamsters following intralingual and intracerebral inoculation of the HY strain of the transmissible mink encephalopathy agent. Localization of PrPSc to the neuromuscular junction suggests that this synapse is a site for prion agent spread between motor axon terminals and muscle cells. Following intracerebral inoculation, the majority of PrP …

The Sweet Tooth Of Adult Parasitoid Cotesia Rubecula: Ignoring Hosts For Nectar?, Gitta Siekmann, Michael A. Keller, Brigitte Tenhumberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Investing time and energy into survival and reproduction often presents a trade-off to many species of animals. In parasitic wasps, both hosts and sugar sources contribute to the forager’s fitness but are often found in different locations. The decision to search for hosts or for food can have a strong impact on fitness when the forager’s lifetime is short and resources are not abundant. We investigated the tendency of flowers and hosts to attract 1-day-old female Cotesia rubecula Marshall (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) with different feeding histories in a wind tunnel. Only well-fed wasps exhibited a preference for hosts. In comparison, unfed …

A Nebraska Odor Footprint Tool For Planning Pork Facilities, Richard Koelsch Jul 2004

A Nebraska Odor Footprint Tool For Planning Pork Facilities, Richard Koelsch

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Pork producers and rural communities are struggling to balance air quality issues (primarily odors) with the presence and growth of the industry. Currently the type of pork facility, odor control measures, prevailing wind direction, atmospheric conditions, and a community's tolerance to some degree of odor are largely ignored in the planning process because scientific tools that incorporate this information are lacking. Without such tools, decisions on setback distances and acceptable type and size of facilities are influenced by a range of arguments, often emotional in nature. In addition, pork producers lack tools to assist in evaluating impact on a rural …

The Role Of The Putative Virulence Markers (Caga And Vaca ) Of Helicobacter Pylori In Peptic Ulcer Disease, Barik A. Salih Jul 2004

The Role Of The Putative Virulence Markers (Caga And Vaca ) Of Helicobacter Pylori In Peptic Ulcer Disease, Barik A. Salih

Saudi Medical Journal

Helicobacter pylori is genetically diverse and certain strains are more virulent and cause more severe diseases than others and such diversity is reflected on the clinical outcome. The cytotoxin-associated gene (cagA) and vacuolating cytotoxin (vacA) gene are 2 putative markers that were associated with peptic ulcer disease. The basis for the epidemiological association between the cagA and vacA genes is not known. In this review, the molecular characteristics of these markers, and its role in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer are discussed.

The Crisis Of Antibiotic-Resistance In Bacteria, Ahmedtarif A. El-Tahawy Jul 2004

The Crisis Of Antibiotic-Resistance In Bacteria, Ahmedtarif A. El-Tahawy

Saudi Medical Journal

Significant increases in the prevalence of resistance to antibiotics have been observed in common pathogen of humans worldwide. The consequences of the appearance and spread of antimicrobial resistance have included increasing morbidity, mortality, and cost of health care. The increasing use of antimicrobial agents promotes the appearance and spread of bacterial resistance. Strict clinical guidelines on antibiotic prescribing and firm guidance on the optimum length of treatment is required. These strategies can be utilized as a part of a multidisciplinary approach to limit the appearance and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance, in addition to, surveillance of antibiotic resistance rates both locally …

Circle Formation Algorithm For Autonomous Agents With Local Sensing, Andrew Mario Michael Jul 2004

Circle Formation Algorithm For Autonomous Agents With Local Sensing, Andrew Mario Michael

Theses

Research on cooperative robotics has increased radically over the past decade due to its simplicity and applicability in a variety of fields. Shape formation plays an important role in such cooperative behavior. Our work deals with the formation of a circle by a group of mobile agents (robots) that initially are randomly spread and randomly oriented in an unmapped terrain. The agents have simple characteristics and limited capabilities. They are autonomous, homogeneous, anonymous, and memory-less. They do not communicate with each other, but are able to measure the inter-agent distances and angels. The agents follow the same distributed algorithm synchronously …
