Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on indices of oxidative stress and lipid profiles in maternal and cord blood samples. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 40 normal pregnant women and 46 women with GDM during the period 1998 through to 1999 at the Armed Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The GDM patients were subdivided into 2 groups: patients receiving insulin treatment (GDM-I, N=19) and patients under control diet (GDM-D, N=27). Plasma a- and y-tocopherols were estimated by high-performance liquid chromatography, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA) was analyzed by fluorometry. Serum lipids (low density lipoprotein, high …

Disseminated Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Khalifa E. Sharquie, Rafid A. Najim

Saudi Medical Journal

Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis DCL is a condition rarely seen in the Middle East. We report a case of disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis in a 60-years-old lady. The patient first presented 1996 with an initial lesion, which started on the butterfly area of the face and spread, probably due to immunosuppression, to involve the whole face. The lesions consisted of nodules, which did not ulcerate. The histology showed abundance of macrophages filled with amastigotes L-D bodies. The patient was started on oral zinc sulphate 10 mg/kg in 3 divided doses daily. The condition showed gradual improvement. Repeated biopsies showed upgrading of the …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Research on the western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population summering off northeastern Sakhalin Island, Russia, has been ongoing since 1995. This collaborative Russia-U.S. research program has produced important new information on the present day conservation status of this critically endangered population. This report reviews recent findings from 2003 research activities and combines such with data from previous years, in some cases ranging back to 1994. Photo-identification research conducted off Sakhalin Island in 2003 resulted in the identification of 75 whales, including 11 calves and two previously unidentified non-calves. When combined with data from 1994-2002, a catalog of 131 …

Relative Importance Of Heat-Labile Enterotoxin In The Causation Of Severe Diarrheal Disease In The Gnotobiotic Piglet Model By A Strain Of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli That Produces Multiple Enterotoxins, Emil M. Berberov, You Zhou, David H. Francis, Michael A. Scott, Stephen D. Kachman, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains that produce multiple enterotoxins are important causes of severe dehydrating diarrhea in human beings and animals, but the relative importance of these enterotoxins in the pathogenesis is poorly understood. Gnotobiotic piglets were used to study the importance of heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) in infection with an ETEC strain that produces multiple enterotoxins. LT- (ΔeltAB) and complemented mutants of an F4+ LT+ STb+ EAST1+ ETEC strain were constructed, and the virulence of these strains was compared in gnotobiotic piglets expressing receptors for F4+ fimbria. Sixty percent of the piglets …

Effect Of Hormonal And Temporal Factors On Captive Female Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Behavior, Chifuyu Horikoshi

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Activity patterns, spatial use and reproductive hormones of nine adult-female captive manatees at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (HSWSP) were studied from January 6 to August 10, 2003. This study probed two main topics: 1) activity pattern and spatial use of the facility by manatees over three times of day and three seasons (winter, spring and summer), and 2) correlation between manatees behavior and reproductive hormone concentrations collected via fecal samples. Activity patterns and spatial use of the manatees were affected by provisioned food availability over the day and natural vegetation over the study period. Five manatees had estrous cycle …

Comparison Of Medical Subject Headings And Text-Word Searches In Medline To Retrieve Studies On Sleep In Healthy Individuals, Elizabeth Sergeevna Jenuwine, Judith A. Floyd

Nursing Faculty Research Publications

Objective: The objective was to investigate the performance of two search strategies in the retrieval of primary research papers containing descriptive information on the sleep of healthy people from MEDLINE.

Methodology: Two search strategies - one based on the use of only Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), the second based on text-word searching - were evaluated as to their specificity and sensitivity in retrieving a set of relevant research papers published in the journal Sleep from 1996 to 2001 that were preselected by a hand search.

Results: The subject search provided higher specificity than the text- word search …

Intellectual Property, Laurence P. Colton, Nigamnarayan Acharya

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys case law developments in the area of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights, and trademarks, relevant to Georgia during the period from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2003. The authors have not attempted to include all cases that touch upon intellectual property, but instead they have selected some decisions that are of more significance or interest or that indicate a particular direction the areas of law may take.

Intellectual property law comprises several discrete yet overlapping areas of law. The four primary areas are patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret. Patent and copyright law are provided for …

Social Identity And Manipulative Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak Jul 2004

Social Identity And Manipulative Interhousehold Transfers Among East African Pastoralists, Marieke Huysentruyt, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak

Economics - All Scholarship

We model interhousehold transfers between nomadic livestock herders as the state-dependent consequence of individuals' strategic interdependence resulting from the existence of multiple, opposing externalities. A public good security externality among individuals sharing a social
(e.g., ethnic) identity in a potentially hostile environment creates incentives to band together. Self-interested interhousehold wealth transfers from wealthier herders to poorer ones may emerge endogenously within a limited wealth space as a means to motivate accompanying migration by the recipient. The distributional reach and size of the transfer are limited, however, by a resource appropriation externality related to the use of common property grazing lands. …

A Cost Effective Approach To Taxonomic Resolution For Bioassessment And Monitoring Programs In The State Of Georgia, Jodi Alene Williams Jul 2004

A Cost Effective Approach To Taxonomic Resolution For Bioassessment And Monitoring Programs In The State Of Georgia, Jodi Alene Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The Georgia Ecoregions Reference Sites Project has developed biological criteria for streams in Georgia according to the Rapid Bioassessment Protocols For Wadeable Streams and Rivers. Streams will ultimately be classified into categories of impairment so that management decisions can be made in accordance with the Clean Water Act. A cost-effective approach to accomplish mandates set forth by the Clean Water Act must be employed, as state budgets are limited. One means of examining costs is to assess taxonomic resolution. Taxonomic resolution not only assesses the sensitivity of biocriteria, it also allows one to make recommendations to state agencies regarding the …

Teabag: A Debugger For Curry, Stephen Lee Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes TeaBag, which is a debugger for functional logic computations. TeaBag is an accessory of a virtual machine currently under development. A distinctive feature of this machine is its operational completeness of computations, which places novel demands on a debugger. This thesis describes the features of TeaBag, in particular the handling of non-determinism, the ability to control nondeterministic steps, to remove context information, to toggle eager evaluation, and to set breakpoints on both functions and terms. This thesis also describes TeaBag's architecture and its interaction with the associated virtual machine. Finally, some debugging sessions of defective programs are …

Effects Of Natal Departure And Water Level On Survival Of Juvenile Snail Kites (Rostrhamus Sociabilis) In Florida, Victoria J. Dreitz, Wiley M. Kitchens, Donald L. Deangelis Jul 2004

Effects Of Natal Departure And Water Level On Survival Of Juvenile Snail Kites (Rostrhamus Sociabilis) In Florida, Victoria J. Dreitz, Wiley M. Kitchens, Donald L. Deangelis

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Survival rate from fledging to breeding, or juvenile survival, is an important source of variation in lifetime reproductive success in birds. Therefore, determining the relation-ship between juvenile survival and environmental factors is essential to understanding fitness consequences of reproduction in many populations. With increases in density of individuals and depletion of food resources, quality of most habitats deteriorates during the breeding season. Individuals respond by dispersing in search of food resources. Therefore, to understand the influence of environmental factors on juvenile survival, it is also necessary to know how natal dispersal influences survival of juveniles. We examined effects of various …

On Cary Wolfe's Animal Rites And Zoontologies, Matthew Wolf-Meyer

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The question of the category of the animal and its relation to that of the human is one that has recently surfaced in the work of such theorists as Jacques Derrida, Donna Haraway and Giorgio Agamben; this recent concern with the speciesism that underlies scientific categorization, and the faulty structure such speciesism lends for philosophical investigations into the qualities of Man, has largely been framed within the context of humanism and the problematic of articulating posthumanist ethics. Reductively, the concerns of the above authors are the ways in which the difference that has been constructed between the human …

Cyborg Bodies And Digitized Desires: Posthumanity And Phillip K. Dick, Jennifer Attaway Jul 2004

Cyborg Bodies And Digitized Desires: Posthumanity And Phillip K. Dick, Jennifer Attaway

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

The interaction between human beings and intelligent machines has challenged the traditional understanding of what it means to be human. In his novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, phillip k. dick rethinks human identity through the positioning of human beings within a technologically mediated reality that displaces the biological body and the spontaneity of human sensation. Written in 1968, dick's novel anticipates the effect of a technologically mediated culture on the formation of a posthuman identity. dick's fictional juxtaposition of the human being and the organically anthropomorphic android complicates conventional implications of embodiment. Androids are physically …

Dead Astronauts, Cyborgs, And The Cape Canaveral Fiction Of J. G. Ballard: A Posthuman Analysis, Melanie Rosen Brown

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In Dead Astronauts, Cyborgs, and the Cape Canaveral Fiction of J.G. Ballard: A Posthuman Analysis, Melanie Rosen Brown explores the ways in which the so-called Cape Canaveral short stories of J.G. Ballard anthologized in the collection Memories of the Space Age exemplify the promises of posthumanity as articulated by posthuman theorists such as Donna Haraway and N. Katherine Hayles. Although Ballard's fiction is viewed by many as a needlessly pessimistic and derogatory portrayal of NASA's space program, viewed through a posthuman lens, Ballard's fiction instead reveals him to be optimistic about the future of space exploration -- cautiously …

Probing The Posthuman: Richard Powers' Galatea 2.2 And The Mind-Body Problem, Miranda Campbell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In this paper, Miranda Campbell discusses Richard Powers' novel Galatea 2.2 and argues that this work is situated at the intersection of the posthumanist and humanist discourses. Campbell examines Powers' approach to the mind-body problem, his interrogation of the limits and limitations of posthumanism, and its dissolution of the importance of the body, difference, and agency. In the posthuman setting of the Center for Advanced Science of this novel, scientists integrate the mind into the body through its designation as a mechanically functioning brain. At the Center, the binary of human and machine begins to erode with the …

[First paragraph]

Jacking In to the Matrix Franchise is the red pill that makes us understand the world of the Matrix in ways we could not while we were immersed in it, since the volume's essays serve as a comprehensive look into the Matrix franchise, not just the film trilogy composed by The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Matrix: Revolutions. For the Matrix directors, Andy and Larry Wachowski, orchestrated an array of artistic endeavors, including a collection of short anime stories entitled The Animatrix, the video game Enter The Matrix and the The Matrix comics …
