Situated Cellular Agents For Crowd Simulation And Visualization, Stefania Bandini, Sara Manzoni, G. Vizzari Jul 2004

Situated Cellular Agents For Crowd Simulation And Visualization, Stefania Bandini, Sara Manzoni, G. Vizzari

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The paper presents a Multi Agent Systems (MAS) approach to crowd modelling, based on the Situated Cellular Agents (SCA) model. This is a special class of Multilayered Multi Agent Situated System (MMASS), rooted on Cellular Automata, providing an explicit spatial representation and the definition of adjacency geometries. The model also defines a concept of autonomous agent, provided with an internal architecture and individual state and behaviour, capable of different means of space–mediated interaction (synchronous, between adjacent agents, and asynchronous among distant entities). Heterogenous entities may be modelled through the specification of different agent types, defining different behaviours and perceptive capabilities. …

Generic Process-Based Plant Models For The Analysis Of Landscape Change, B. Reineking, A. Huth, C. Wissel Jul 2004

Generic Process-Based Plant Models For The Analysis Of Landscape Change, B. Reineking, A. Huth, C. Wissel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The analysis of landscape change impacts on community composition and dynamics is difficult for species rich plant communities, because of their high complexity. One approach to deal with this challenge are generic process-based models. In these models, the species are described by a common set of parameters and functional responses. Thus, they allow both the integration of knowledge on key processes, and a common description for several ecological patterns. An important aspect of these models are trade-offs in the species’ physiological and life-history traits, which prevent ‘super-species’ that dominate under all environmental conditions. We compare process-based models with two other …

There is also an important tourist zone near Setúbal withimportant beaches and tourist activities. The main pollutants considered in this study were SO2, Particles,NOx, CO, and VOC. A range of numerical models there was used …

Assessing Management Systems For The Conservation Of Open Landscapes Using An Integrated Landscape Model Approach, M. Rudner, R. Biedermann, B. Schröder, M. Kleyer Jul 2004

Assessing Management Systems For The Conservation Of Open Landscapes Using An Integrated Landscape Model Approach, M. Rudner, R. Biedermann, B. Schröder, M. Kleyer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The aim of the MOSAIK-project is to test alternative management systems regarding theirefficiency in maintaining the characteristic species composition of dry grasslands. We present an integratedlandscape model approach to test an alternative management system for applicability in preserving drygrasslands. By rototilling, i.e. cyclic, massive disturbance in the vegetation cover, we established a controlledmosaic cycle comprising a successional series from heavily disturbed areas to grassland and shrubs. Thedisturbance regime affects the landscape on different temporal and spatial scales. The resulting shiftingmosaics determine the habitat qualities for plant and animal species. Changes in habitat quality may reducethe survival of local or regional …

A Model Based On Cellular Automata For The Simulation Of The Dynamics Of Plant Populations, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi Jul 2004

A Model Based On Cellular Automata For The Simulation Of The Dynamics Of Plant Populations, Stefania Bandini, Giulio Pavesi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We present a Cellular Automata based model for the simulation of the dynamics of plant populations. The evolution of a plant population in a given area mainly depends on the resources available on the territory(in turn influenced by other factors like sunlight, rain, temperature, and so on) and how different individuals(plants) compete for them. Traditional methods used in this field are continuous and based on differentialequations that model the global evolution of the system: unfortunately, most of the data needed to providereliable parameters for these models are usually scarce and difficult to obtain. The model we present is insteadthought in a …

Anticipated Effects Of Re-Allocation Of Intensive Livestock In Sandy Areas In The Netherlands, A. P. Van Wezel, R. O. G. Franken, J. D. Van Dam, P. Cleij Jul 2004

Anticipated Effects Of Re-Allocation Of Intensive Livestock In Sandy Areas In The Netherlands, A. P. Van Wezel, R. O. G. Franken, J. D. Van Dam, P. Cleij

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Currently plans are developed for a large-scale 'reconstruction' of the rural area in the Netherlands. Goals of the reconstruction are to diminish veterinary risks and to improve the quality of environment, nature and landscape. Spatial separation of land-use is an important instrument. The plans are prepared at a regional scale, involving stakeholders. We present an ex-ante analysis of the effects of these plans, including cost-effectiveness and integration with related spatial plans. Scenarios for the autonomous development of intensive livestock, spatial data-rich analysis and research in the field of public administration are integrated in the ex-ante analysis.

Diese Aufnahme Ist Bezaubernd Schön: Deutsche Grammophon's 1964 Recording Of The Magic Flute, Aaron Dalton

BYU Studies

Singing speaks most eloquently for itself in real time and doesn't fall into words on paper very easily," writes a former voice teacher of mine. "It is either beautiful or it isn't. If it's beautiful, words aren't adequate. If it isn't, words about it have to be either false or cruel." Why, then, would I offer the following dissection of what I believe to be the greatest recording of arguably the greatest opera? And how, with a glut of Magic Flute recording on the market (I aborted my tally at over forty casts on dozens of labels), can I presume …

From Narrative To Number: A Role For Quantitative Models In Scenario Analysis, Eric Kemp-Benedict Jul 2004

From Narrative To Number: A Role For Quantitative Models In Scenario Analysis, Eric Kemp-Benedict

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

There is growing concern that the predictive mathematical models conventionally used in policy analysis are too limiting to serve as tools in futures studies, because they cannot reproduce the sudden changes seen in real societies. The field of complex systems has successfully produced similar changes in simplified model systems, but has been less successful in practical futures work. Some recent scenario exercises (such as the IPCC scenarios, UNEP’s GEO-3 scenarios, the work of the Global Scenario Group and the European VISIONS project) have addressed this issue by combining wide-ranging narratives with quantitative models, demonstrating that a synthesis between qualitative and …

An Integrated System For The Forest Fire Dynamics Hazard Assessment Over A Wide Area, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi Jul 2004

An Integrated System For The Forest Fire Dynamics Hazard Assessment Over A Wide Area, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An integrated approach is presented for the assessment of forest fire hazard over a wide geographical area on the basis of real-time information, meteorological forecasts, and territorial data stored in a geographical information system. The paper describes the architecture of a comprehensive system that can be designed in order to manage the overall forest fire risk. Specifically, vegetation modelling, in connection with local meteorological conditions and topography, allows obtaining forecast of the dynamics of moisture contents of the different kinds of dead and live fuels over a wide geographical area. Besides, a semi-physical fire propagation model gives a quantitative evolution …

The Coexistence Of Plankton Species With Various Nutrient Conditions: A Lattice Simulation Model, T. Miyazaki, T. Togashi, T. Suzuki, T. Hashimoto, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura Jul 2004

The Coexistence Of Plankton Species With Various Nutrient Conditions: A Lattice Simulation Model, T. Miyazaki, T. Togashi, T. Suzuki, T. Hashimoto, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In aquatic ecosystems, species diversity is known to be higher in poor nutrient conditions. Theenrichment of nutrition often induces the loss of biodiversity. This phenomenon is called the paradox ofenrichment, since higher nutrient levels can support more species. Furthermore, the species diversity isusually high in most natural communities of phytoplankton. However, the niches of planktonic algae seemalmost identical in apparently homogeneous, aquatic environments. Therefore, the high species diversity ofphytoplankton is incomprehensible and called the paradox of plankton. Mathematical studies show that localcoexistence of competitive species is rare. In a competitive community, the most superior species eliminatesall the inferior species in …

Towards An Environmental Dss Based On Spatio-Temporal Markov Chain Approximation, Gerard Balent, Marc Deconchat, Sylvie Ladet, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Regis Sabbadin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The aim of this paper is to provide a mathematical model for assessing the influence of forest fragmentation on the dynamics of animal biodiversity in a changing landscape. The model is based on a stochastic, spatially explicit population dynamics model which takes both temporal and spatial dynamics of biological processes into account. Unfortunately, this model is not tractable, so we will use a Monte Carlo simulation method in order to approximate the multidimensional random variables involved. The main strength of our approach is its ability to model generic biological and socio-economic dynamic processes, which are both explicitly spatial and stochastic. …

Implications Of Uncertainty And Variability In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Pig Farming Systems, C. Basset-Mens, H.M.G. Van Der Werf, P. Durand, Ph Leterme Jul 2004

Implications Of Uncertainty And Variability In The Life Cycle Assessment Of Pig Farming Systems, C. Basset-Mens, H.M.G. Van Der Werf, P. Durand, Ph Leterme

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In a case study of pig production systems we propose a simple quantification of the uncertainty of LCA results (intra-system variability) and we explored inter-system variability in order to produce more robust LCA outcomes. Our quantification of the uncertainty took into account the variability of technical performance (crop yield, feed efficiency) and of emission factors (for NH3, N2O and NO3) and the influence of the functional unit (FU) (kg of pig versus hectare used). For farming systems, the inter-system variability was investigated through differentiating by the production mode (conventional, quality label, organic (AB)), and farmer practices (Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) …

A Patch Hath Smaller Patches: Delineating Ecological Neighborhoods For Parasites, Derek Zelmer, John R. Seed Jul 2004

A Patch Hath Smaller Patches: Delineating Ecological Neighborhoods For Parasites, Derek Zelmer, John R. Seed

Faculty Publications

Use of the host individual as a boundary for parasite populations and communities provides an unambiguous spatial unit that is useful for pattern description, but this framework precludes consideration of the host landscape and within-host population dynamics. Recognizing host individuals as spatially and temporally complex landscapes requires modified concepts of parasite populations and communities. An outline of the currently accepted hierarchies of parasite populations and communities is provided on the basis of ecological neighborhoods that are delineated by discrete habitat patches or functional dynamics (or both), as opposed to host individuals. This parasite-based framework accommodates consideration of both within- and …

Taxes, Efficiency, And Redistribution: Discriminatory Taxation Of Villages In Ottoman Palestine, Southern Syria And Transjordan In The Sixteenth Century, Metin M. Cosgel Jul 2004

Taxes, Efficiency, And Redistribution: Discriminatory Taxation Of Villages In Ottoman Palestine, Southern Syria And Transjordan In The Sixteenth Century, Metin M. Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Governments can tax productive activities with either uniform or discriminatory rates among taxpayers. Although discriminatory rates can cause productive inefficiency and require high cost of administration, they can be preferred because of their advantage in distributional flexibility. This paper studies the discriminatory taxation of production in the Fertile Crescent. Using information from the Ottoman tax registers, it examines the basis, distortionary effects, and distributional consequences of discriminatory rates quantitatively. The results challenge widely held beliefs about the basis for discriminatory rates in this region and the Ottoman government's motivation in adapting systems of taxation in newly conquered lands.

Genetic Analysis Of The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Ul20 Protein Domains Involved In Cytoplasmic Virion Envelopment And Virus-Induced Cell Fusion, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Timothy P. Foster, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Jul 2004

Genetic Analysis Of The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Ul20 Protein Domains Involved In Cytoplasmic Virion Envelopment And Virus-Induced Cell Fusion, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Timothy P. Foster, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

The herpes simplex virus type 1 UL20 protein (UL20p) is an important determinant for cytoplasmic virion morphogenesis and virus-induced cell fusion. To delineate the functional domains of the UL20 protein, we generated a panel of single and multiple (cluster) alanine substitutions as well as UL20p carboxyl-terminal truncations. The UL20 mutant genes could be broadly categorized into four main groups: Group I UL20 mutant genes complemented for both virus production and virus-induced cell fusion; Group II UL20 mutant genes did not complement for either virus-induced cell fusion or infectious virus production; Group II UL20 mutant genes complemented for virus-induced cell fusion …

Initial Studies On Sperm Cryopreservation Of A Live-Bearing Fish, The Green Swordtail Xiphophorus Helleri, Changjiang Huang, Qiaoxiang Dong, Ronald B. Walter, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Swordtails and platyfish of the genus Xiphophorus are valuable models for biomedical research and are also commercially raised as ornamental fish valued by aquarists. While research use and commercial interest increases yearly in these fish, cryopreservation of sperm is unexplored in this genus. Xiphophorus are live-bearing fishes characterized by small body sizes, limited sperm volumes, and internal fertilization, an atypical reproductive mode for fish. These attributes make research involving cryopreservation of Xiphophorus germplasm challenging. To explore methods for sperm cryopreservation, this study evaluated the effect of different loading volumes of sperm suspension in 0.25-ml French straws, different dilution ratios of …

Genetics: The Not-So-New Thing, Dena S. Davis Jul 2004

Genetics: The Not-So-New Thing, Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Practical knowledge of heredity predates history. Indigenous peoples laid the foundations of modern agriculture by developing plants such as corn. However, the language and metaphors of the Human Genome Project treat modern genetics as if it had no historical antecedents and fail to acknowledge these early contributions to the science of heredity. The results of this blindness are twofold: it exacerbates reluctance of native peoples to take part in genetic research and to garner the benefits of genetic medicine, and it encourages "biopiracy," as modern scientists "discover" and patent native plants.

Toward An Anthropology Of Apotheosis In Mozart's Magic Flute: A Demonstration Of The Artistic Universality And Vitality Of Certain "Peculiar" Latter-Day Saint Doctrines, Alan F. Keele

BYU Studies

It seems there are certain notions held by Latter-day Saints, deviating almost diametrically from those promulgated by orthodox Christianity, that have the power to evoke form certain conservative Christian quarters the most vituperative fulminations. One thinks immediately of the idea expounded by Joseph Smith at King Follett's funeral that humans have the potential to become gods through a process of perfection experienced by the gods themselves. The orthodox response to this notion in the form of the Godmakers films and other manifestations of righteous indignation has been extraordinary. The paradox, however, is this: Scratch the orthodox surface of Christianity, explore …
