Differential Involvement Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Subregions In Conditioned Cue-Induced And Cocaine-Primed Reinstatement Of Cocaine Seeking In Rats, Rita A. Fuchs, K. Allison Evans, Macon P. Parker, Ronald E. See Jul 2004

Differential Involvement Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Subregions In Conditioned Cue-Induced And Cocaine-Primed Reinstatement Of Cocaine Seeking In Rats, Rita A. Fuchs, K. Allison Evans, Macon P. Parker, Ronald E. See

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) damage elicits impulsivity and perseveration, and impairments in OFC function may underlie compulsive drug seeking in cocaine users. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the effects of fiber-sparing lesions or functional inactivation of OFC subregions on cocaine seeking in rats. Rats were trained to lever press for intravenous cocaine (0.20 mg/infusion) paired with the presentations of light plus tone stimuli. Responding was then allowed to extinguish. Rats received bilateral NMDA (0.1 M) or sham lesions of the lateral OFC (lOFC) or medial OFC (mOFC) before self-administration training (experiment 1) or muscimol plus baclofen (0.1 and 1.0 mM) …

Transparency Tube Provides Reliable Measure Of Water Clarity And Suspended Solids Concentration In California Waterways, Gary M. Litton, R. Dahlgren, E. V. Nieuwenhuyse

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

We examined the efficacy of using transparency-tube measurements to estimate turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in several California waterways. Just as lowering a black-and-white disk (Secchi disk) into a lake provides a convenient way to measure its water clarity, a transparency tube offers a practical alternative for measuring water clarity and suspended solids concentrations in California streams and waterways. While transparency relationships with turbidity and TSS are strongest within a given sampling location, these relationships are relatively robust across a wide range of water bodies displaying contrasting conditions. However, transparency-tube measurements appear to have …

When you judge a horse—whether in a show, on an individual basis, or in a contest—you form an opinion or estimation about that horse. However, in order to form a valid opinion, you must have the following basic skills: 1) Be familiar with the horse. 2) Know the criteria used to judge horses. 3) Be able to recognize conformational faults.

Bald Eagle Nesting Status In Texas, Brent Ortego, Chris Gregory Jul 2004

Bald Eagle Nesting Status In Texas, Brent Ortego, Chris Gregory

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been tracking recovery of the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) since it was placed on the endangered species list. The number of Bald Eagles nesting in Texas has been rapidly increasing since 1987, with twenty (20) active nests documented at that time. The number of active nests increased to 37 in 1992, 54 in 1997, and 110 in 2002. Nineteen (19) new Bald Eagle nesting territories were located, and 117 of 159 nest territories observed were occupied in 2003. One hundred and fortyfour (144) young were fledged from 92 of the 117 occupied nests. Density …

Impact Of Cholinesterase-Inhibiting Pesticides On White-Winged Doves In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Jorge M. Pisani, William E. Grant, Miguel A. Mora

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

The White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica, WWDO) is considered one of the most important game birds of the southeastern United States. It generates important income in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas. This region is the historical natural breeding habitat of the species; however, since the 1920s, populations of WWDO have been declining. Reduction of WWDO density has been attributed to the loss of nearly 95% of the natural breeding habitat due to human disturbances, such as agricultural, industrial, and urban development. Nevertheless, some studies point out that native nesting habitat suitable for breeding is being underused, which suggests …

Suitability Of A Gps Collar For Grazing Studies, Carmen T. Agouridis, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Stephen R. Workman, Benjamin K. Koostra, Dwayne R. Edwards, Eric S. Vanzant

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The traditional means of tracking animal location in a field is by visual observation. Not only is this method labor intensive, it is also prone to error as the observer can alter cattle movement, observation periods are often too short to obtain confidence in general daily behavior patterns, and observer fatigue becomes an issue. In the 1990s, the University of Kentucky began using GPS collars on cattle to track their position with the goal of incorporating this information into cattle management practices. One of the key unanswered questions regarding the GPS collars is the accuracy of the position data recorded …

Blank Pages Of The Holocaust: Gypsies In Yugoslavia During World War Ii, Elizabeta Jevtic Jul 2004

Blank Pages Of The Holocaust: Gypsies In Yugoslavia During World War Ii, Elizabeta Jevtic

Theses and Dissertations

After a general overview of the persecution of Gypsies (Roma) during World War II, this thesis focuses on the situation of Gypsies on the territory of Serbia and Croatia. The two republics are chosen because of their unique structures during the years 1941 to 1945. Both republics had puppet regimes set up by Germany; however, Croatia was an ally to Germany and strove to mirror the Third Reich in all its policies. The regime's head, Ante Pavelic, was known as one of the most brutal and merciless men on the territory of Yugoslavia, and with him Croatian paramilitary forces committed …

Die Zauberflöte: What's In A Title?, Harrison Powley Jul 2004

Die Zauberflöte: What's In A Title?, Harrison Powley

BYU Studies

Scholars have argued over Die Zauberflöte for many years. Is it a fairy-tale opera, a metaphorical discussion of Masonic and Rosicrucian beliefs, or a contemporary political or philosophical commentary on the 1780s and the Enlightenment? It can be all these and more, but for many in the audience during fall 1791 it was entertainment, pure and simple. The audience at the Theater auf der Weiden came from all levels of society. The nobility and educated attended as well as the working and servant classes.

Adaptation, Enactment, And Ingmar Bergman's Magic Flute, Dean W. Duncan Jul 2004

Adaptation, Enactment, And Ingmar Bergman's Magic Flute, Dean W. Duncan

BYU Studies

For all of its manifold musical glories, The Magic Flute was and is a theatrical work, meant for production and performance, and that repeatedly. As such, I will be concentrating on the opera's theatrical and cinematic elements. This article treats Ingmar Bergman's felicitous 1975 film adaptation of opera. Those inclined can find much to complain about in Bergman's cinematic version of Mozart's opera, but I would like to suggest that, with sympathy and openness, this complaining could give way to approval and great gratitude. In this Magic Flute, we have an interpretation worthy of its source, which is saying …

Impacts Of Invasive Exotic Grasses On Avian Communities During The Breeding Season In South Texas, Aron A. Flanders, William P. Kuvlesky Jr., Donald C. Ruthven Iii Jul 2004

Impacts Of Invasive Exotic Grasses On Avian Communities During The Breeding Season In South Texas, Aron A. Flanders, William P. Kuvlesky Jr., Donald C. Ruthven Iii

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

The adverse impacts of exotic vegetation on native flora and fauna are well documented in many ecosystems. However, there is little data on the effects of exotic vegetation on native wildlife in the South Texas Plains. The objective of this study was to determine if the abundance and diversity of breeding birds and native flora differed between areas dominated by native grasses and areas dominated by the exotic grasses Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana) and bufflegrass (Cenchrus ciliaris). Three native and 3 exotic grass dominated sites were selected for study on the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area and Piloncillo Ranch. Point counts …

Developing Scientific Talent In Students With Special Needs: An Alternative Model For Identification, Curriculum, And Assessment, Carolyn R. Cooper, Susan M. Baum, Terry W. Neu

Education Faculty Publications

Can students with learning and attention difficulties in school actually be talented scientists in disguise? This article presents a model that was highly successful in identifying and developing scientific talent in these special students. The factors that contributed to the success of the model were the following: The emphasis was on helping students become creative producers. The model also featured a strong mentoring component that included role-modeling and problem solving within specific scientific domains and provided students with authentic, discovery-based, experiential, advanced level subject matter of the domain. Finally, the alternate means of assessing student achievement focused on a student’s …

Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper outlines a component of a study currently being undertaken to provide a new tool for the holistic management of dryland salinity. The Little River catchment in the upper Macquarie River basin of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is used as a case study. The model uses a Bayesian Decision Network (BDN) approach to integrating the various system components – biophysical, social, ecological, and economic. The method of integration of the system components is demonstrated through an example application showing the impacts of various scenarios on terrestrial and riparian ecology. The paper outlines these scenarios and demonstrates the way …

Combining Dynamic Economic Analysis And Environmental Impact Modelling: Addressing Uncertainty And Complexity Of Agricultural Development, Heikki Lehtonen, Ilona Bärlund, Sirkka Tattari, Mikael Hilden Jul 2004

Combining Dynamic Economic Analysis And Environmental Impact Modelling: Addressing Uncertainty And Complexity Of Agricultural Development, Heikki Lehtonen, Ilona Bärlund, Sirkka Tattari, Mikael Hilden

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this study the impacts of different agricultural policies on agricultural production and nutrient leaching from agricultural lands are evaluated using the economic DREMFIA agricultural sector model and a field scale nutrient transport model ICECREAM. DREMFIA includes an evolutionary scheme of technology diffusion which considers farm investments, evolving farm size structure and technological change explicitly. The technology diffusion model allows self-inforcing patterns of technical change driven by the spread of information and farmers’ knowledge related to different technological alternatives. Hence the long-term changes in agriculture due to policy changes may be essentially larger than those predicted by traditional static equilibrium …

Robustness Against Different Implementation Of Uncertainty In A Contingency Dss: The Prestige Oil Spill Revised, K. W. Wirtz, S. Adam, X. Liu, N. Baumberger

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The dramatic consequences of oil or chemical spills for coastal ecosystems and economic uses make contingencymanagement a politically sensitive task. We here propose a new Decision Support System (DSS)consisting of a combination of modeling and evaluation methods with which different containment strategiescan be compared in the light of a variety of potential ecological and economic damages. In this study, the DSSis tested by hindcasting the Prestige accident off the coast of Spain in 2002. In particular, an oil spill contingencysimulation model coupled with multi-criteria analysis techniques was used to assess oil spill impacts forweather and current forecasts available at that …

On The Local Coexistence Of Species In Plant Communities, J. Yoshimura, K. Tainaka, M. Shiyomi, T. Suzuki Jul 2004

On The Local Coexistence Of Species In Plant Communities, J. Yoshimura, K. Tainaka, M. Shiyomi, T. Suzuki

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Coexistence of many competitive species is very common in natural plant communities. For example, almost all forests and grasslands consist of various species. Extremely high biodiversity is seen in tropical rain forests. Grassland communities also often consist of many species. In plant communities, spatially competitive species of plants coexist in a mosaic pattern. Communities with a single species are very extremely rare in nature. However, mathematical studies show that the local coexistence of spatially competitive species is rarely achieved even with two competitive species. Many studies have introduced external factors to promote coexistence, such as immigration of seeds, seed dormancy, …
