On The Accelerated Failure Time Model For Current Status And Interval Censored Data, Lu Tian, Tianxi Cai Sep 2004

On The Accelerated Failure Time Model For Current Status And Interval Censored Data, Lu Tian, Tianxi Cai

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper introduces a novel approach to making inference about the regression parameters in the accelerated failure time (AFT) model for current status and interval censored data. The estimator is constructed by inverting a Wald type test for testing a null proportional hazards model. A numerically efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based resampling method is proposed to simultaneously obtain the point estimator and a consistent estimator of its variance-covariance matrix. We illustrate our approach with interval censored data sets from two clinical studies. Extensive numerical studies are conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of the new estimators.

Human Stick Balancing: Tuning Lèvy Flights To Improve Balance Control, Juan Luis Cabrera, John Milton Sep 2004

Human Stick Balancing: Tuning Lèvy Flights To Improve Balance Control, Juan Luis Cabrera, John Milton

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

State-dependent, or parametric, noise is an essential component of the neural control mechanism for stick balancing at the fingertip. High-speed motion analysis in three dimensions demonstrates that the controlling movements made by the fingertip during stick balancing can be described by a Lévy flight. The Lévy index, , is approximately 0.9; a value close to optimal for a random search. With increased skill, the index does not change. However, the tails of the Lévy distribution become broader. These observations suggest a Lévy flight that is truncated by the properties of the nervous and musculoskeletal system; the truncation decreasing as skill …

The Frat Volume 102 Number 03 July, August & September 2004, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

2001-2006

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Utilizing Learning Styles For Interactive Tutorials, Magnus Aase, Franz J. Kurfess Sep 2004

Utilizing Learning Styles For Interactive Tutorials, Magnus Aase, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Developing successful Web-based learning environments has shown to be a challenging and difficult endeavor [7][11] that requires knowledge from multiple domains like pedagogy, psychology, knowledge engineering, software engineering, and Web technologies. Their lack of individual preferred ways of instruction is a challenge we address in this paper. We introduce a Web-based learning environment that teaches concepts from Artificial Intelligence to college students. This environment is intended to be used as a complementary tool for the standard lectures. By adapting the instruction and learning material to the individual student’s learning style the tutorial gives the student a personal learning experience and …

Role Of Programmed Cell Death In Defining Zebrafish Development, Nathaniel Abraham Sep 2004

Role Of Programmed Cell Death In Defining Zebrafish Development, Nathaniel Abraham

Faculty Dissertations

Embryogenesis takes place by cell proliferation, cell growth and Programmed Cell Death (PCD). Two pathways of PCD, apoptosis (or PCD-I) involving caspases, and autophagy (or PCD-II) involving lysosomes, have been well characterized in several species. Using the zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) model, we asked whether apoptosis or autophagy was a default program of death across organs and tissues with the other pathway playing a complementary role, or, whether they were parallel pathways independently active in different tissues.

To answer this, we used light and fluorescence microscopy techniques and investigated autophagy and apoptosis as functions of time and location during …

Wild Justice And Fair Play: Cooperation, Forgiveness, And Morality In Animals, Marc Bekoff Sep 2004

Wild Justice And Fair Play: Cooperation, Forgiveness, And Morality In Animals, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

In this paper I argue that we can learn much about ‘wild justice’ and the evolutionary origins of social morality – behaving fairly – by studying social play behavior in group-living animals, and that interdisciplinary cooperation will help immensely. In our efforts to learn more about the evolution of morality we need to broaden our comparative research to include animals other than non-human primates. If one is a good Darwinian, it is premature to claim that only humans can be empathic and moral beings. By asking the question ‘What is it like to be another animal?’ we can discover rules …

A motion-sensitive en-face-scanning 3-D optical coherence microscope (OCM) has been designed and constructed to study critical events in the early development of plants and animals. We describe the OCM instrument and present time-lapse movies of frog gastrulation, an early developmental event in which three distinct tissue layers are established that later give rise to all major organ systems. OCM images constructed with fringe-amplitude data show the mesendoderm migrating up along the blastocoel roof, thus forming the inner two tissue layers. Motion-sigma data, measuring the random motion of scatterers, is used to construct complementary images that indicate the presence of Brownian …

Folate Biofortification In Tomatoes By Engineering The Pteridine Branch Of Folate Synthesis, Rocio Diaz De La Garza, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Sebastian M. J. Klaus, Gilles J. C. Basset, Jesse F. Gregory Iii, Andrew D. Hanson

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Plants are the main source of folate in human diets, but many fruits, tubers, and seeds are poor in this vitamin, and folate deficiency is a worldwide problem. Plants synthesize folate from pteridine, p-aminobenzoate (PABA), and glutamate moieties. Pteridine synthesis capacity is known to drop in ripening tomato fruit; therefore, we countered this decline by fruit-specific overexpression of GTP cyclohydrolase I, the first enzyme of pteridine synthesis. We used a synthetic gene based on mammalian GTP cyclohydrolase I, because this enzyme is predicted to escape feedback control in planta. This engineering maneuver raised fruit pteridine content by 3- …
