Recognizing And Overcoming Difficult Site Conditions For Afforestation Of Bottomland Hardwoods, William Conner, J A. Stanturf, E S. Gardiner, C J. Schweitzer, A W. Ezell Sep 2004

Recognizing And Overcoming Difficult Site Conditions For Afforestation Of Bottomland Hardwoods, William Conner, J A. Stanturf, E S. Gardiner, C J. Schweitzer, A W. Ezell

Publications

In the last decade, about 370,000 acres (150,000 ha) of economically marginal
farmland in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) have been restored to
bottomland hardwood forests (Stanturf and others 1998, King and Keeland 1999,
Schoenholtz and others 2001). Planting of this considerable acreage is due to several federal programs, such as the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), that assist landowners by financing afforestation (Figure 1). Unfortunately, these operational plantings have not performed as well as smaller plantings or research plots (Stanturf and others 2001a). For example, a recent survey of WRP plantings in westcentral Mississippi revealed that more than 90 …

Historical Evidence Of Riparian Forests In The Great Plains And How That Knowledge Can Aid With Restoration And Management., Elliot West, Greg Ruark Sep 2004

Historical Evidence Of Riparian Forests In The Great Plains And How That Knowledge Can Aid With Restoration And Management., Elliot West, Greg Ruark

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

While some argue that the Great Plains were dominated by grasslands and that riparian woodlands were rare, others contend that trees would logically have occurred in riparian areas due to favorable microenvironment conditions. Historically, what native plant communities were found in riparian zones of the Great Plains? The answers to this question depend to a large extent on what time period is used as a reference of pre-settlement conditions.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1981) drew upon conditions in 1905 for insight and concluded that trees were “wholly absent” or consisted of scattered cottonwood and willow. However, such a …

Weaving Words And Pictures: Allen Say And The Art Of Illustration, Christina M. Desai Sep 2004

Weaving Words And Pictures: Allen Say And The Art Of Illustration, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Text and illustration in childrens literature can interact in many ways, sometimes complementing, sometimes contradicting each other. Picture books for children now receive considerable critical attention, yet the illustrations are seldom analyzed as seriously as the text. This article explores the dynamics between words and pictures in three fiction works: The Boy of the Three-Year Nap, by Dianne Synder, El Chino, and Emma's Rug, both by Allen Say. Say brings varied artistic techniques, such as visual metaphor, cartoon elements, and irony, as well as a multicultural perspective, to the development of character and meaning.'

The Alluring Simplicity And Complex Reality Of Genetic Rescue, David A. Tallmon, Gordon Luikart, Robin Waples

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A series of important new theoretical, experimental and observational studies demonstrate that just a few immigrants can have positive immediate impacts on the evolutionary trajectory of local populations. In many cases, a low level of immigration into small populations has produced fitness benefits that are greater than those predicted by theoretical models, resulting in what has been termed ‘genetic rescue’. However, the opposite result (reduced fitness) can also be associated with immigration of genetically divergent individuals. Central to our understanding of genetic rescue are complex interactions among fundamental concepts in evolutionary and population biology, including both genetic and non-genetic (environmental, …

Extracting More Out Of Relocation Data: Building Movement Models As Mixtures Of Random Walks, Juan Manuel Morales, Daniel T. Haydon, Jacqui Frair, Kent E. Holsinger, John M. Fryxell Sep 2004

Extracting More Out Of Relocation Data: Building Movement Models As Mixtures Of Random Walks, Juan Manuel Morales, Daniel T. Haydon, Jacqui Frair, Kent E. Holsinger, John M. Fryxell

EEB Articles

We present a framework for fitting multiple random walks to animal movement paths consisting of ordered sets of step lengths and turning angles. Each step and turn is assigned to one of a number of random walks, each characteristic of a different behavioral state. Behavioral state assignments may be inferred purely from movement data or may include the habitat type in which the animals are located. Switching between different behavioral states may be modeled explicitly using a state transition matrix estimated directly from data, or switching probabilities may take into account the proximity of animals to landscape features. Model fitting …

On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell Sep 2004

On The U.S. Aversion To Ritual Behavior And The Vocation Of The Liturgical Theologian, Martin F. Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

This three-part essay reflects on the vocation of liturgical theologians in a culture in which there is a general antipathy toward the influence of religious rituals on personal formation and decision-making.1 Part ι considers a few foundational nineteenth-century authors of the American Renaissance for reflections on the aversion to Christian ritual behavior. Part 2 takes up the sermons of a few nineteenth-century revivalist preachers. Part 3 suggests five challenges to liturgical theologians who teach and think in the complex social and religious environment of the United States.

Long-Term Correction Of Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency By Wpre-Mediated Overexpression Using A Helper-Dependent Adenovirus, Asad Mian, W. Michael Mccormack Jr, Viraj Mane, Soledad Kleppe, Philip Ng, Milton Finegold, William E. O'Brien, John R. Rodgers, Arthur L. Beaude, Brendan Lee Sep 2004

Long-Term Correction Of Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency By Wpre-Mediated Overexpression Using A Helper-Dependent Adenovirus, Asad Mian, W. Michael Mccormack Jr, Viraj Mane, Soledad Kleppe, Philip Ng, Milton Finegold, William E. O'Brien, John R. Rodgers, Arthur L. Beaude, Brendan Lee

Department of Emergency Medicine

The urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are important models for developing gene replacement therapy for liver diseases. Long-term correction of the most common UCD, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, has yet to be achieved in clinical or preclinical settings. The single human clinical trial using early-generation adenovirus (Ad) failed to show any biochemical correction. In adult OTC-deficient mice, an E1/E2-deleted Ad vector expressing the mouse OTC gene, but not the human, was only transiently therapeutic. By using post-transcriptional overexpression in the context of the less immunogenic helper-dependent adenoviral vector, we achieved metabolic correction of adult OTC-deficient mice for >6 months. Demonstrating this …
