Combined Adipocyte-Macrophage Fatty Acid-Binding Protein Deficiency Improves Metabolism, Atherosclerosis, And Survival In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice., Jeffrey Boord, Kazuhisa Maeda, Liza Makowski, Vladimir R Babaev, Sergio Fazio, Macrae F Linton, Gökhan S Hotamisligil

Hospital Medicine

BACKGROUND: The adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) aP2 is expressed by adipocytes and macrophages and modulates insulin resistance, glucose and lipid metabolism, and atherosclerosis. Insulin sensitivity is improved in obese but not in lean aP2-deficient mice. A second fatty acid-binding protein, mal1, also is expressed in adipocytes and macrophages, and mal1 deficiency produces similar effects on insulin resistance. We tested the hypothesis that combined aP2 and mal1 deficiency would produce synergistic effects on metabolism and reduce atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE-/-) mice.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Male and female apoE-/- mice null for both aP2 and mal1 (3KO) and apoE-/- controls …

Applications Of Decision And Utility Theory In Multi-Agent Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh Sep 2004

Applications Of Decision And Utility Theory In Multi-Agent Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

This report reviews the applications of decision-related theories (decision theory, utility theory, probability theory, and game theory) in various aspects of multi-agent systems. In recent years, multi-agent systems (MASs) have become a highly active research area as multi-agent systems have a wide range of applications. However, most of real-world environments are very complex and of uncertainty. An agent’s knowledge about the world is rather incomplete and uncertain. The actions of the agent are non-deterministic with a range of possible outcomes. The agent may have many desires that conflict each other. The agent also needs to know about other agents and …

Watershed Scale Impacts Of Buffers And Upland Conservation Practices On Agrochemical Delivery To Streams, Thomas G. Franti, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Mary Carla Mccullough, L. M. Stahr, Mike Dosskey, D. D. Snow, Roy F. Spalding, Alan L. Boldt Sep 2004

Watershed Scale Impacts Of Buffers And Upland Conservation Practices On Agrochemical Delivery To Streams, Thomas G. Franti, Dean E. Eisenhauer, Mary Carla Mccullough, L. M. Stahr, Mike Dosskey, D. D. Snow, Roy F. Spalding, Alan L. Boldt

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Conservation buffers are designed to reduce sediment and agrichemical runoff to surface water. Much is known about plot and field scale effectiveness of buffers; but little is known about their watershed scale impact. Our objective was to estimate the watershed scale impact of grass buffers by comparing sediment and agrichemical losses from two adjacent 141-165 hectare watersheds, one with conservation buffers and one without. Rainfall derived runoff events from 2002-2003 were monitored for water runoff, TSS, phosphorous and atrazine loss. A conservation-watershed included 0.8 km of grass buffers and 0.8 km of riparian forest buffer, ridge-tilled corn, corn-beans-alfalfa rotation, terraces …

agricultural area of eastern Nebraska. A topographic survey was conducted of a reach of Little Muddy Creek where beaver are known to have been building dams for twelve years. Results indicate that over this time period the thalweg elevation has aggraded an average of 0.65 m by trapping 1730 t of sediment in the pools behind dams. Beaver may provide a feasible solution to channel degradation problems in this region.

Mexico: Topographic Survey And Solutions To Lack Of Water, Paul Kosmerl, Chris Nieport Sep 2004

Mexico: Topographic Survey And Solutions To Lack Of Water, Paul Kosmerl, Chris Nieport

ETHOS Technical Reports

The Marianist mission’s base of operations in the Uxpanapa Valley of Southern Mexico runs a dormitory for students whose families live too far away from the valley’s middle and high schools for them to attend. This dormitory, in addition to other buildings onsite, consumes more water then the current well can provide in the dry season. After surveying the property and carrying out research, a number of appropriate technology solutions were suggested. These included conservation practices, improving existing wells so they will produce more water, digging a new well, rotating between the use of the two wells onsite to allow …
