Papers in Virology
Production of structural proteins from foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and bovine herpes virus (BHV-1) in Nicotiana benthamiana through the use of a tobacco mosaic virus-based vector (TMV-30B) has been reported previously. The development of the TMV-30B-HISc vector, a new version that adds a C-terminal histidine (His) sequence to the foreign protein expressed is described. Coding sequences from the FMDV VPl protein and the core protein, p24, from a clade C HIV-1 isolate from Zambia were cloned into the new vector and infective RNAs were generated for each construct to inoculate N. benthamiana plants. His-tagged proteins were purified from inoculated leaves …

Killing The Willing: "Volunteers," Suicide And Competency, John H. Blume
Killing The Willing: "Volunteers," Suicide And Competency, John H. Blume
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Of the 822 executions, in the modern era of capital punishment, 106 involved volunteers, or inmates who chose to waive their appeals and permit the death sentence to be carried out. The debate about volunteers, although intense, has primarily been polemic. Those who wish to curtail a death row inmate’s ability to waive his appeals refer to volunteer cases as nothing more than “state assisted suicide;” advocates of permitting inmates to choose execution reject the suicide label, instead focusing on respect for a death row inmate’s right to choose whether to accept his punishment.

Cancer Incidence Among Pesticide Applicators Exposed To Atrazine In The Agricultural Health Study, Jennifer A. Rusiecki, Anneclaire De Roos, Won Jin Lee, Mustafa Dosemeci, Jay H. Lubin, Jane A. Hoppin, Aaron Blair, Michael C. R. Alavanja
United States Public Health Resources
Background: Atrazine is the most heavily applied agricultural pesticide for crop production in the United States. Both animal and human studies have suggested that atrazine is possibly carcinogenic, but results have been mixed. We evaluated cancer incidence in atrazine-exposed pesticide applicators among 53 943 participants in the Agricultural Health Study, a prospective cohort study of licensed pesticide applicators in Iowa and North Carolina.
Methods: We obtained detailed pesticide exposure information using a self-administered questionnaire completed at the time of enrollment (1993–1997). Cancer incidence was followed through December 31, 2001. We used adjusted Poisson regression to calculate rate ratios (RRs) and …

Sperm Cryopreservation Of A Live-Bearing Fish, The Platyfish Xiphophorus Couchianus, Changjiang Huang, Qiaoxiang Dong, Terrence R. Tiersch
Faculty Publications
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of cryoprotectant, osmotic pressure, cooling rate, equilibration time, and sperm-to-extender ratio, as well as somatic relationships of body length, body weight, and testis weight to sperm density in the platyfish Xiphophorus couchianus. Sperm motility and survival duration after thawing were significantly different between cryopreservation with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and glycerol, with the highest motility at 10 min after thawing obtained with 14% glycerol. With subsequent use of 14% glycerol as cryoprotectant, the highest motility after thawing was observed with Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) across a range of 240-300 mOsm/kg. …

Oscillator Damped By A Constant-Magnitude Friction Force, Avi Marchewka, David S. Abbott, Robert J. Beichner
Oscillator Damped By A Constant-Magnitude Friction Force, Avi Marchewka, David S. Abbott, Robert J. Beichner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although a simple spring/mass system damped by a friction force of constant magnitude shares many of the characteristics of the simple and damped harmonic oscillators, its solution is not presented in most texts. Closed form solutions for the turning and stopping points can be found using an energy-based approach. A dynamical approach leads to a closed form solution for the position of the mass as a function of time. The main result is that the amplitude of the oscillator damped by a constant magnitude friction force decreases by a constant amount each swing and the motion dies out after a …
Headache Management For The Pain Specialist, Avi Ashkenazi, Stephen Silberstein
Headache Management For The Pain Specialist, Avi Ashkenazi, Stephen Silberstein
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Headache is a common symptom caused by a wide variety of diseases. Primary headaches include migraine, cluster headache, tension-type headache and other less common diseases. It is important to differentiate these headaches from secondary headaches caused by vascular, neoplastic, infectious, metabolic and toxic disorders. Most primary headaches have a genetic basis, with environmental factors acting as triggers. Recent advances in basic research resulted in the development of more specific and effective therapies. Medication overuse headache is a very common cause of chronic daily headache. Detoxification from the offending drug is essential for headache improvement. Cervicogenic headache is common and needs …

Perception Of Meaning And Usage Motivations Of Emoticons Among Americans And Chinese Users, Yujiao Wang
Perception Of Meaning And Usage Motivations Of Emoticons Among Americans And Chinese Users, Yujiao Wang
Theses
Do people of different cultures agree on the meaning and use of emoticons? This study addresses this question from an inter-cultural perspective and explores the use of emoticons in the American and Chinese Computer-mediated communication (CMC) communities. The research indicates that both the Americans and Chinese participants use emoticons for entertaining, informational and social interaction motivations but the Americans are more likely to use emoticons for information motivations than the Chinese and the Chinese participants are more likely to use emoticons for social interactions than the Americans participants. The results correspond to the cultural differences between the two countries in …
