Nicotine Serves As A Feature-Positive Modulator Of Pavlovian Appetitive Conditioning In Rats, M. I. Palmatier, J. L. Peterson, J. L. Wilkinson, Rick A. Bevins Sep 2004

Nicotine Serves As A Feature-Positive Modulator Of Pavlovian Appetitive Conditioning In Rats, M. I. Palmatier, J. L. Peterson, J. L. Wilkinson, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present experiments examined whether a nicotine state could set the occasion for a pairing between visual cues and a rewarding outcome in rats. Following nicotine administration, presentation of a conditional stimulus (CS; light-on) was followed by brief access to a sucrose solution. When saline was administered, the same CS was presented but was not followed by any consequence. In Experiment 1, two groups assessed whether rats could acquire this Pavlovian feature-positive discrimination via different training procedures. An anticipatory food-seeking conditioned response (CR) developed during the CS on nicotine sessions but not on saline sessions in both groups. In Experiment …

Increasing Acceptance And Efficacy Of Zinc Phosphide Rodenticide Baits Via Modification Of The Carbohydrate Profile, J. J. Johnston, D. L. Nolte, B. A. Kimball, K. R. Perry, J. C. Hurley Sep 2004

Increasing Acceptance And Efficacy Of Zinc Phosphide Rodenticide Baits Via Modification Of The Carbohydrate Profile, J. J. Johnston, D. L. Nolte, B. A. Kimball, K. R. Perry, J. C. Hurley

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Toxicant coated grain-based baits are widely used to control rodent pests throughout the world, but where alternative food sources are available, bait acceptance and efficacy are often less than optimal. In an attempt to develop baiting strategies to increasebait acceptance and efficacy of zinc phosphide-coated baits, a sugar-enhanced rolled oat based zinc phosphide bait was evaluated. With pre-baiting, 100 and 60% mortality was achieved for California and Belding’s ground squirrels, respectively. A series of two choice tests with a variety of potential bait matrices indicated that rolled oats was a desirable base matrix for both species but the lecithin sticker …

In Vitro Expression Of Full-Length And Truncated Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus G Proteins And Their Antibody Responses In Balb/C Mice, Ryan P. Brady, Christina L. Topliff, Clayton L. Kelling Sep 2004

In Vitro Expression Of Full-Length And Truncated Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus G Proteins And Their Antibody Responses In Balb/C Mice, Ryan P. Brady, Christina L. Topliff, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a primary cause of lower respiratory tract disease in calves. Protection is incomplete following vaccination or natural infection, as re-infections are common. The objectives of this study were to create plasmid DNA constructs encoding the full-length, secreted, or conserved region of the BRSV G glycoprotein, and to compare and evaluate their expression in cell culture and potential to induce antibody responses in BALB/c mice. Transfection of COS-7 cells with plasmid DNA resulted in expression of the BRSV G region from each of the plasmid DNA constructs. Following inoculation of BALB/c mice with plasmid DNA, …

Use Of Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Measures In Conservation Biology Research: Considerations For Application And Interpretation, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Brian E. Washburn Sep 2004

Use Of Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Measures In Conservation Biology Research: Considerations For Application And Interpretation, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Brian E. Washburn

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Fecal glucocorticoid metabolite analyses are increasingly being used by a variety of scientists (e.g., conservation biologists, animal scientists) to examine glucocorticoid (i.e., stress hormone) secretion in domestic and wild vertebrates. Adrenocortical activity (i.e., stress response) is of interest to conservation biologists because stress can alter animal behavior, reduce resistance to disease, and affect population performance. The noninvasiveness of fecal-based assessments is attractive, particularly when studying endangered species, because samples can often be obtained without disturbing the animal. Despite such advantages, many confounding factors inhibit the utility of this technique in addressing conservation problems. In particular, interpretation of fecal glucocorticoid metabolite …

Brain Quirks And Courtroom Testimony, Michael Mcguire Sep 2004

Brain Quirks And Courtroom Testimony, Michael Mcguire

The Gruter Institute Working Papers on Law, Economics, and Evolutionary Biology

Selected findings from the neurosciences addressing ways in which the brain processes information are reviewed from the perspective: “Do the findings inform our understanding of courtroom testimony by witnesses attempting to give accurate accounts of observed events?” Answers to the question include: accurate recall is possible but difficult and infrequent; built-in and learned (possibly?) information processing systems which disrupt memory and bias interpretations are responsible for this outcome; witnesses are seldom aware of disruptions unless they are experiencing difficulty remembering.

Sales Of Livestock Insurance Scheduled To Resume, Darrell R. Mark Sep 2004

Sales Of Livestock Insurance Scheduled To Resume, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

USDAs Risk Management Agency (RMA) offered livestock producers in selected pilot states, including Nebraska, a new insurance product in 2003 called Livestock Risk Protection (LRP). It provided down-side price risk protection while allowing producers to take advantage of higher prices, similar to creating a floor price by purchasing put options. Premiums for LRP insurance changed daily and depended on current market prices and market volatility. Unlike put option premiums that change based on the current day’s futures trade, LRP premiums were determined using the previous days futures and options prices. Since LRP could be purchased until 8:00 p.m. based on …

Effect Of A Juvenile Hormone Analogue On Lipid Metabolism In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Endocrine-Biochemical Bases Of Life-History Trade-Offs, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao Sep 2004

Effect Of A Juvenile Hormone Analogue On Lipid Metabolism In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Endocrine-Biochemical Bases Of Life-History Trade-Offs, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao

Anthony Zera Publications

The wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, has a flight-capable morph (LW[f]: long winged with functional flight muscles) and a flightless morph (SW: short winged with reduced nonfunctional flight muscles) that differ genetically in many aspects of lipid metabolism. To determine whether these differences result from genetically based alterations in endocrine regulation, the juvenile hormone mimic, methoprene, was applied to the LW(f) morph. This hormone manipulation converted the LW(f) morph into a SW phenocopy with respect to all aspects of lipid metabolism studied; that is, methoprene application decreased in vivo biosynthesis of total lipid and triglyceride, increased absolute and relative biosynthesis of …

Intuitive Tools For Camera Manipulation, Nisha Sudarsanam, Cindy Grimm, Karan Singh

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present an image-space camera manipulation widget that sup-ports visualization of the relationship of the camera with respect tothe scene. The form of the widget presents the user with naturalaffordances for camera manipulation. Visual aids such as ghostingof the scene and preview animations are used to acquaint noviceusers with the functions of different parts of the widget. Mousegestures are used to transition between different perspective viewsof the scene in an intuitive way. Finally, we provide a novel methodfor visualizing camera bookmarks.
