Creating Rights In The Age Of Global Governance: Mental Maps And Strategic Interests In Europe, Francesca Bignami
Creating Rights In The Age Of Global Governance: Mental Maps And Strategic Interests In Europe, Francesca Bignami
ExpressO
This Article takes a first step towards developing a positive theory of rights in institutions of global governance through a study of the European Commission, one of the oldest and most powerful international organizations in existence today. I draw on the extensive political science theory on the European Union, in particular historical institutionalism, to explain the constellation of rights that European citizens are guaranteed today in their relations with their executive branch. Rights against government were created in three phases, each of which was the product of a strategic move by one or more European institutions to preserve authority in …

The Benefit Of Using Simulation To Improve The Implementation Of Lean Manufacturing Case Study: Quick Changeovers To Allow Level Loading Of The Assembly Line, Jack J. Mcclellan
The Benefit Of Using Simulation To Improve The Implementation Of Lean Manufacturing Case Study: Quick Changeovers To Allow Level Loading Of The Assembly Line, Jack J. Mcclellan
Theses and Dissertations
In today's competitive manufacturing environment, companies are constantly looking for ways to improve. Because of this, many companies are striving to become "lean" by implementing lean manufacturing, which is a difficult process. To aid in the implementation of lean manufacturing, simulation was used to reduce the trial-and-error period of lean manufacturing and find to optimum approach to implement the lean manufacturing principle. In this research, a case study of implementing level loading of the production schedule for BullFrog International, L.C. will be examined. To make it possible to implement level loading, the thermo-former machine at the beginning of the operations …

Reframing For Decisions: Transforming Talk About Literacy And Assessment Among Teachers And Researchers, Loukia K. Sarroub
Reframing For Decisions: Transforming Talk About Literacy And Assessment Among Teachers And Researchers, Loukia K. Sarroub
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Education research in the 21st century can be characterized by at least four dynamic, interpretive movements that include the critical analysis of pedagogy, schools, and communities; the politics of representation; the textual analyses of literary and cultural forms; and the ethnographic study of the production, consumption, and distribution of these forms in everyday life. Although these issues are beyond the scope of this chapter (see Denzin & Lincoln, 2000, for an extensive discussion), in large part the basis of these movements in the field of education grows out of a struggle among researchers and educators to make sense of competing …
Virtual Markets For Virtual Goods: The Mirror Image Of Digital Copyright?, Peter D. Eckersley
Virtual Markets For Virtual Goods: The Mirror Image Of Digital Copyright?, Peter D. Eckersley
ExpressO
The Internet and Copyright Law are particularly ill-suited to each other. One is designed to give as much information as possible to everyone who wants it; the other allows authors, artists and publishers to earn money by restricting the distribution of works made out of information. The beneficiaries of copyright law are lobbying for the re-design of computers and the Internet to instate "content control" and "digital rights management" (DRM). These technologies are intended to make copyright workable again by re-imposing limits on access to information goods, but they carry high direct and indirect social costs.
One alternative, which has …
Corporate Defendants And The Protections Of Criminal Procedure: An Economic Analysis, Vikramaditya S. Khanna
Corporate Defendants And The Protections Of Criminal Procedure: An Economic Analysis, Vikramaditya S. Khanna
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
Corporations are frequently treated as “persons” under the law. One of the fundamental questions associated with this treatment is whether corporations should receive the same Constitutional protections and guarantees as natural persons. In particular, should corporations receive the Constitutional protections of Criminal Procedure? After all, corporations cannot be sent to jail so the sanctions they face are essentially the same as in civil proceedings. If so, then why not have the same procedural protections for corporate defendants in civil and criminal cases? Little scholarly analysis has focused on this issue from an economic perspective and this article aims to fill …

Optimal Sampling Times In Bioequivalence Studies Using A Simulated Annealing Algorithm , Leena Choi, Brian Caffo, Charles Rohde
Optimal Sampling Times In Bioequivalence Studies Using A Simulated Annealing Algorithm , Leena Choi, Brian Caffo, Charles Rohde
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
In pharmacokinetic (PK) studies, blood samples are taken over time on subjects after the administration of a drug to measure the time-course of the plasma drug concentrations. In bioequivalence studies, the trapezoidal rule on the sampled time points is often used to estimate the area under the plasma concentration-time curve, a quantity of principle interest. This manuscript investigates the choice of sampling time points to estimate the area under the curve. In particular, we explore the relative merits of several objective functions, those functions which are minimized with respect to the sampling times to obtain an optimal study design. We …

Eosinophils are often dominant inflammatory cells present in the lungs of asthma patients. Nonetheless, the role of these leukocytes remains poorly understood. We have created a transgenic line of mice (PHIL) that are specifically devoid of eosinophils, but otherwise have a full complement of hematopoietically derived cells. Allergen challenge of PHIL mice demonstrated that eosinophils were required for pulmonary mucus accumulation and the airway hyperresponsiveness associated with asthma. The development of an eosinophi-less mouse now permits an unambiguous assessment of a number of human diseases that have been linked to this granulocyte, including allergic diseases, parasite infections, and tumorigenesis.

Heme Oxygenase-2 Gene Deletion Attenuates Oxidative Stress In Neurons Exposed To Extracellular Hemin., Raymond F Regan, Jing Chen, Luna Benvenisti-Zarom
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Hemin, the oxidized form of heme, accumulates in intracranial hematomas and is a potent oxidant. Growing evidence suggests that it contributes to delayed injury to surrounding tissue, and that this process is affected by the heme oxygenase enzymes. In a prior study, heme oxygenase-2 gene deletion increased the vulnerability of cultured cortical astrocytes to hemin. The present study tested the effect of HO-2 gene deletion on protein oxidation, reactive oxygen species formation, and cell viability after mixed cortical neuron/astrocyte cultures were incubated with neurotoxic concentrations of hemin. RESULTS: Continuous exposure of wild-type cultures to 1-10 microM hemin for 14 …
