An exchange regarding the article: Bradley, K. L., E. I. Damschen, L. M. Young, D. Kuefler, S. Went, G. Wray, N. M. Haddad, J. M. H. Knops, and S. M. Louda. 2003. Spatial heterogeneity, not visitation bias, dominates variation in herbivory. Ecology 84:2214–2221.
Cahill et al. write:
Here we show that the experimental design and statistical analysis used by Bradley et al. (2003) do not adequately control for Type II experimental error (accepting the null hypothesis when it is in fact false). This is particularly important when responses have low effect sizes such as those previously demonstrated for visitation effects …
A Morph-Specific Daily Cycle In The Rate Of Jh Biosynthesis Underlies A Morph-Specific Daily Cycle In The Hemolymph Jh Titer In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Zhangwu Zhao, Anthony J. Zera
A Morph-Specific Daily Cycle In The Rate Of Jh Biosynthesis Underlies A Morph-Specific Daily Cycle In The Hemolymph Jh Titer In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Zhangwu Zhao, Anthony J. Zera
Anthony Zera Publications
A previous study documented a high amplitude, morph-specific daily cycle in the hemolymph JH titer in the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus. The JH titer rose and fell 10–20 fold in the flight-capable [LW(f), long-winged] morph during the late-photophase- early scotophase, while it was relatively constant during that time in the flightless (SW, short-winged) morph. In the present study we documented a dramatic morph-specific daily cycle in the in vitro rate of juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis that was tightly correlated with the hemolymph JH titer on days 5–7 of adulthood. Biosynthetic rates rose and fell 1–2 fold between the late …
Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg
Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg
Saudi Medical Journal
In the past 25 years, the world has witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious diseases. In the early stages of their emergence, isolation and quarantine may be the only and last resort to effectively control infectious diseases when we are confronted with limited or no knowledge of a newly identified and previously unknown contagious disease, which causes a serious public health threat either locally or internationally. The article traces back the origins of isolation and quarantine; defines precisely the terms isolation and quarantine as they are currently used in the modern era; compare and contrast these terms; identifies …
Abdominal Cocoon. An Unusual Cause Of Intestinal Obstruction, Abdulla Al-Abassi, Mohammed Emad
Abdominal Cocoon. An Unusual Cause Of Intestinal Obstruction, Abdulla Al-Abassi, Mohammed Emad
Saudi Medical Journal
We report a case of abdominal cocoon in a young male patient, presenting with acute intestinal obstruction and abdominal mass. This is a rare acquired condition of the peritoneum in which the small bowel is encased either partially or totally by a dense fibrous membrane. Operative findings, perioperative imaging and treatment guidelines are discussed. A better awareness of this condition may facilitate preoperative diagnosis; prevent inadvertent bowel damage at laparoscopy and unnecessary bowel resection at laparotomy.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Two new species of Cinclotaenia (Cyclophyllidea: Dilepididae) are described from the small intestine of Cinclus leucocephalus (Aves: Passeriformes: Cinclidae) collected in the Yungas region of Bolivia. Cinclotaenia minuta n. sp. is characterized by possessing a minute strobila with a maximum body length of 1.58 mm, consisting of 5–10 proglottids, 19–22 rostellar hooks with lengths from 16 to 17 mm, 12–17 testes per proglottid, and eggs forming packets without filaments. Cinclotaenia boliviensis n. sp. has bandlike strobila with a length up to 26 mm with 67–74 proglittids, 22 rostellar hooks with length 39–42 mm, 43–68 testes, and eggs forming packets possessing …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Members of 2 species of Synhimantus (Dispharynx) live under the lining of the gizzard in passerine birds from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Synhimantus (Dispharynx) nasuta (Rudolphi, 1819) occurs in Thraupis episcopus, Turdus grayi, Caryothraustes poliogaster, Platyrinchus cancrominus, Ramphocaenus melanurus, Vermivora peregrina, and Geothlypis poliocephala. A single male, in Turdus grayi, apparently representing a new species, distinguishable from all other species of Synhimantus (Dispharynx) by having similar shaped left and right spicules, is described but not named.

Phylogeny For Species Of Haemonchus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea): Considerations Of Their Evolutionary History And Global Biogeography Among Camelidae And Pecora (Artiodactyla), Eric P. Hoberg, J. Ralph Lichtenfels, Lynda M. Gibbons
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic analysis of 25 morphological characters among the 12 species of Haemonchus resulted in one most parsimonious tree (60 steps; consistency index 5 0.67, retention index 5 0.80). Monophyly for Haemonchus was diagnosed by three unequivocal synapomorphies, including the asymmetric origin of the dorsal ray, relative size of the ventral rays, and the presence of a barb on each spicule tip. Species of Haemonchus have complex histories with respect to host and geographic associations: (1) origins in Africa with basal diversification in antelopes (H. krugeri, H. lawrencei, H. dinniki, H. horaki), (2) independent events of …

The Role Of Opt-Outs And Objectors In Class Action Litigation: Theoretical And Empirical Issues, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller
The Role Of Opt-Outs And Objectors In Class Action Litigation: Theoretical And Empirical Issues, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller
Vanderbilt Law Review
We study 236 cases in which we could ascertain quantitative in- formation about the number of objectors, 159 cases with quantitative information about the number of opt-outs, 205 cases with both the size of the class and the number of objectors, and 143 cases with both the size of the class and the number of opt-outs. Opt-outs from class participation and objections to class action resolution are rare: on average, less than 1 percent of class members opt-out, and about 1 percent of class members object to class-wide settlements. Opt-out-rates and objectorrates can be partly explained by observable factors in …
Informal Animation Sketching: Requirements And Design, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay
Informal Animation Sketching: Requirements And Design, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present an interface design for creating informal animations from sketches. Current tools for creating animation are extremely complex. This makes it difficult for designers to prototype animations and nearly impossible for novices to create them at all. Simple animation systems exist but severely restrict the types of motion that can be represented. To guide our design of an animation sketching interface, we conducted field studies into the needs of professional and novice animators. These studies show the wide variety of motions that users desire in informal animations and indicate how to prioritize these types of otion. The interface described …
A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandra B. Zellmer
A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandra B. Zellmer
Faculty Law Review Articles
The nation's preeminent preservation statute, the Wilderness Act of 1964, is now 40 years old. By authorizing a network of congressionally designated wilderness areas on public lands, the Act has proved invaluable for protecting special areas from the most intensive forms of intrusion by humankind But the Act is facing a midlife crisis, and legitimate questions have been raised about its continuing viability as a conservation tool. This Article concludes that the preservation of wild lands remains an essential component of federal public lands management, but that the Wilderness Act, standing alone, has not fulfilled its promise of securing an …

Mcdonald’S And Samoan Youth: A Case Study Of Globalization, Anna Schechter
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The topics of change, development and globalization are extremely pertinent to modern-day Samoa. The past ten years have lead to a vast increase in the inter-connectedness of Samoa to the world economically, socially, and culturally. This paper uses McDonald’s as a representation of the globalization occurring in Samoa in order to better understand the real impacts of these abstract terms. Samoan youth act as a medium in which to explore this topic. They are often the most attune to the impacts of globalization and perhaps even act as a catalyst for change. Thus this paper explores, specifically, the relationship between …

Evaluating Software Development: A Case Study With Pasture Land Management (Plms) Grazing Software, John M. Galbraith, Gordon E. Groover, Franklin (Lex) A. Bruce Jr, Nicholas D. Stone
Journal of Extension
A process for evaluating and improving public domain software is presented for agents and faculty who author software and Web-based training. Extension, education, and conservation employees participated in workshops to learn about a Pasture Land Management System software program that enables farmers to experiment with alternative grazing methods. Users were questioned at initial workshop training and again 6 months later. The workshop evaluation showed concern about the software complexity. The follow-up questionnaire revealed the respondents' priorities for technical improvements. The authors used the participants' feedback to evaluate existing problems and prioritize improvements in the usability and functionality of the software.

I jump in the lake, moving through crisp liquid, opening my eyes to the clarity of sunrays dancing on the sandy bottom that expands itself to an indefinite line between shore and water; my hair flows softly behind me as I glide away from the surface of reality, releasing all tension within and absorbing the surrounding purity. I float towards the surface, leaving the silent world beneath, taking a breath: I am renewed. It is this sensation, swimming on the shores of Lake Superior, that inpsired my utter infatuation with water. Having grown up on an island, I have lived …
