Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke Oct 2004

Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

The discussion here centers on how self-similarity, or parts resembling a whole, has been a recurring aspect in the most diverse fields of human thinking from antiquity to the present. Primary examples are drawn from physics, biology, cybernetics, alchemy, philosophy, myth and, of course, language and literature. The author argues that self-similar patterns are one of the persistent ways in which the human mind structures its experience and knowledge of the world, and then examines some of the questions that arise when an almost ubiquitous concept, structure or linguistic and literary phenomenon resurfaces in a new guise in …

Paradigm Shifts And New Worldviews: Kuhn, Laudan And Discovery In Molecular Biology, Priya Venkatesan Oct 2004

Paradigm Shifts And New Worldviews: Kuhn, Laudan And Discovery In Molecular Biology, Priya Venkatesan

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

The author poses an alternate set of ideas concerning paradigms, normal science, research traditions and scientific revolution on the basis of the unique and inherently distinctive development of molecular biology and genetics; for, a new set of conceptual tools concerning scientific progress are required for an adequate understanding of how biological processes were elucidated under the scientific auspices of the central dogma of the genetic code. This essay concentrates on a limited study of three aspects in genetics: the study of chromosome structure, dynamics and function, reverse transcriptases, and the discovery of RNA catalysts. In attempting to analyze …

The Origins Of American Felony Murder Rules, Guyora Binder Oct 2004

The Origins Of American Felony Murder Rules, Guyora Binder

Journal Articles

Contemporary commentators continue to instruct lawyers and law students that England bequeathed America a sweeping default principle of strict liability for all deaths caused in all felonies. This Article exposes the harsh "common law" felony murder rule as a myth. It retraces the origins of American felony murder rules to reveal their modern, American, and legislative sources, the rationality of their original scope, and the fairness of their original application. It demonstrates that the draconian doctrine of strict liability for all deaths resulting from all felonies was never enacted into English law or received into American law. This Article reviews …

When this fuel injector is …

Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres Oct 2004

Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres

OES Theses and Dissertations

The hydrology of wetlands, particularly how wetland soils collect, store, and redistribute water strongly affects how wetland systems function. In created wetlands, construction processes and materials influence the hydrology and consequently, the potential for successful reestablishment of target vegetation communities. During .2002- 2004, the Virginia Department of Transportation constructed large mitigation wetlands on two different Quaternary aged surfaces with very similar hydrogeomorphic conditions. The Sandy Bottom Nature Park site (SBNP) located in Hampton, VA and rests on the sandy loam Tabb Formation while the Charles City Wetland site (CCW) lies on the older and clay-rich Shirley Formation. This study documents …

Letters To John Lennon: A Play In Two Acts, Stacey Isom

English Theses & Dissertations

Letters to John Lennon is a two-act play about one woman's fantasies, nightmares, and memories that expose her desperate need to feel worthy of love. On the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death, Kay plans to go public with her identity as Lennon's illegitimate daughter. She believes this will result in her sudden rise to fame, a new peace movement, and the consummation of her love with a rock star. Several disasters keep her from her goals, the biggest of which is the arrival of Maury, who claims to be her real father. When Maury's claim seems authentic, Kay's …

A Phylogeny Of Genera Of The Fish Family Nemipteridae (Percoidei) Based On The Cytochrome B Gene, Denise R. Sliter Oct 2004

A Phylogeny Of Genera Of The Fish Family Nemipteridae (Percoidei) Based On The Cytochrome B Gene, Denise R. Sliter

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The species level taxonomy of the Nemipteridae is well understood but existing morphological data is insufficient to hypothesize a phylogeny of the five genera of this family of percoid fishes. Furthermore, there are three distinct and widely disparate habitat requirements within nemipterids and little is known how these evolved. Species in the genera Pentapodus, Scaevius and Scolopsis are typically found around shallow reefs. Nemipterus species are also found in shallow-water, but they inhabit strictly soft sediment bottoms. Parascolopsis is the only deep-water genus and its species are also found over soft sediments. Complete cytochrome b gene sequences (1140 base …

Strong Interactions Between Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) And Caribbean Reef Octopus (Octopus Briareus) In The Florida Keys, Jennifer Anne Lear Oct 2004

Strong Interactions Between Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) And Caribbean Reef Octopus (Octopus Briareus) In The Florida Keys, Jennifer Anne Lear

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Coexisting species may simultaneously compete for resources and interact as predator and prey, creating a strong interaction that can alter the structure of animal communities. This type of interaction potentially occurs between juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) and Caribbean reef octopus (Octopus briareus) within hard-bottom habitats in the Florida Keys, FL (USA), where octopuses may consume juvenile lobsters and also compete with them for limited crevice shelters. I conducted a series of field and mesocosm studies to investigate the nature of octopus-lobster interactions and their implications for the structure of their populations in the wild. …

Effects Of Initial Seated Position On Whiplash In Low Speed Rear-End Impacts Comparison And Study Using The Tno Rear Impact Dummy (Trid) Model, Manjunath P. Venkataramana Oct 2004

Effects Of Initial Seated Position On Whiplash In Low Speed Rear-End Impacts Comparison And Study Using The Tno Rear Impact Dummy (Trid) Model, Manjunath P. Venkataramana

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Despite numerous investigations devoted to its scrutiny, injury causing mechanism associated with rear-end impact collision producing injury such as Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) has remained a mystery. Several criteria have been proposed to predict the injury causing mechanism, but none have been universally accepted. The challenge lies in determining a set of testing procedures representative of real-world collisions, wherein the results obtained are not only the same as human testing, but remain consistent with various subjects and impact conditions. It is hypothesized that one of the most important considerations is the effect of initial seated position (ISP).

This thesis can …

Bacterial Degradation Of Disinfection By-Products In Drinking Water, Laura Inga Fauntleroy Oct 2004

Bacterial Degradation Of Disinfection By-Products In Drinking Water, Laura Inga Fauntleroy

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Chlorine became a major disinfectant for the removal of microbial contaminants in 1914. Current water chlorination procedures yield halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as haloalkanes and haloacetic acids (HAAs), due to the reaction of chlorine with naturally occurring organic compounds. Various water utilities have observed decreased HAAs levels in maximum residence time locations (MRTLs), where they were expected to be higher. These MRTLs have low free chlorine residual and high heterotrophic bacteria plate counts. Xanthobacter autotrophicus, GJ-10, is a bacterium that has been shown to contain dehalogenase enzymes and, therefore, can biodegrade HAAs. A number of water-system bacteria were …

The Devil We Already Know: Medieval Representations Of A Powerless Satan In Modern American Cinema, Kelly J. Wyman Oct 2004

The Devil We Already Know: Medieval Representations Of A Powerless Satan In Modern American Cinema, Kelly J. Wyman

Journal of Religion & Film

The character of Satan has been explored repeatedly in American films, although neither film nor religion scholars have extensively investigated the topic. This article examines the medieval Christian roots of Satan as seen in American cinema and proposes that the most identifiable difference between the medieval Devil and the Satan shown in American films is his level of power over humanity. Hollywood's Satans echo medieval depictions of Satan in form, appearance, and ways of interacting with humans. Although less frightening, pop culture's view of Satan - even when he is treated humorously - is thus linked through movies to medieval …

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil Oct 2004

Integrating Ecology And Relating Natural Systems To Agriculture: An Increased Priority For Extension Agricultural Programming, Kyle Cecil

Journal of Extension

Extension must modify its historical agricultural educational emphasis from one addressing primarily the production of food to one that addresses the production of food in a system encompassing the goals of individuals, society, and the environment. In the search to incorporate more ecological rationale into agricultural production, Extension educators should develop a deeper understanding of the nature of agroecosystems and the principles and processes by which they function. A contemporary Extension agricultural program that understands agroecology and believes in the need for a more sustainable production system will lead the way toward a more profitable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Machinery Cost Estimates For Amish Farms, Randall E. James Oct 2004

Machinery Cost Estimates For Amish Farms, Randall E. James

Journal of Extension

Agricultural enterprise budgets are helpful for modern farms. However, the lack of machinery costs for horse-drawn farms makes it difficult for Extension workers to adapt these budgets to Amish farms. A 2002 study estimated machinery costs on Amish farms in Geauga County, Ohio. Data was collected directly from groups of Amish farmers. The article also introduces the concept of including "horse days" in the total cost estimate. Extension workers in any of the over 30 states with Amish settlements could use information in this study to customize enterprise budgets into realistic educational tools for Amish farms.

Healthy Living In The Pacific Islands: Results Of A Focus Group Process To Identify Perceptions Of Health And Collaboration In The U.S-Affiliated Pacific Islands, Nicky Davison, Randall Workman, Yihe Goh Daida, Rachel Novotny

Journal of Extension

A focus group process was used to gather data on perceptions of health and community collaboration within 6 U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands as part of a process to encourage a community-based participatory approach to addressing community health issues and planning. The focus groups revealed Pacific Islanders' perceptions of health and key local health issues and elements of collaboration. The results were applied to a community-oriented planning process, resulting in the creation of a broad planning framework within which islands could implement their own activities. This approach shows potential for initiating future activities in which communities collaborate in the planning process.
