Lower Columbia River Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Survey 2001-2004, Mark Sytsma, Jeffery Cordell, John Chapman, Robyn Draheim Oct 2004

Lower Columbia River Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Survey 2001-2004, Mark Sytsma, Jeffery Cordell, John Chapman, Robyn Draheim

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Rates of aquatic nonindigenous species (ANS) introductions and their social, economic, and ecological impacts are increasing. Introductions of nonnative marine organisms have increased exponentially over the last two centuries and expenditures on outreach, control, and research exceed millions of dollars per species for several invaders of particular concern to the United States. These trends suggest that major changes are occurring in the freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems of North America, but their magnitude is probably underestimated.

Shinto Perspectives In Miyazaki's Anime Film "Spirited Away", James W. Boyd, Tetsuya Nishimura Oct 2004

Shinto Perspectives In Miyazaki's Anime Film "Spirited Away", James W. Boyd, Tetsuya Nishimura

Journal of Religion & Film

Among the anime films by Hayao Miyazaki made available in English translation, Spirited Away contains the most folk and Shrine Shinto motifs. The central locale of the film is a bathhouse where a great variety of creatures, including kami, come to bathe and be refreshed. This feature, plus the portrayal of various other folk beliefs and Shrine Shinto perspectives, suggests that Miyazaki is affirming some basic Japanese cultural values which can be a source of confidence and renewal for contemporary viewers.

Semi-Autonomous Human-Uav Interfaces For Fixed-Wing Mini-Uavs, Randal Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Morgan Quigley Oct 2004

Semi-Autonomous Human-Uav Interfaces For Fixed-Wing Mini-Uavs, Randal Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Morgan Quigley

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: DARPA, AFOSR. We present several human-robot interfaces that support real-time control of a small semi-autonomous UAV. These interfaces are designed for searching tasks and other missions that typically do not have a precise predetermined flight plan. We present a detailed analysis of a PDA interface and describe how our other interfaces relate to this analysis. We then offer quantative and qualitative performance comparisons of the interfaces, as well as an analysis of their possible real-world applications.

4-H Experiential Education--A Model For 4-H Science As Inquiry, Virginia D. Bourdeau Oct 2004

4-H Experiential Education--A Model For 4-H Science As Inquiry, Virginia D. Bourdeau

Journal of Extension

Science education can be improved by immersing learners in the process of using scientific knowledge to "do" science at their 4-H club or school outdoor learning center. In Oregon school-based 4-H programs, the 4-H Science Inquiry in Action model assists volunteers and teachers in moving away from "cookbook experiments" toward learner-centered experiential programs. Using the 4-H Inquiry in Action model, 4-H Agents, leaders, and schoolteachers can make any pre-scripted activity more engaging for youth learners.

Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design …

Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young Oct 2004

Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article offers a retrospective analysis of feminist research on tax and family law and developments in these fields since the early 1980s. We identify the sometimes contradictory trends-both in legislation and in case law-that raise questions about the influence that feminist research has had on these areas of law. We then flag some ongoing challenges confronting feminists engaged in law reform efforts. Some common themes will emerge, but notable differences are also evident in the ways that feminist thought has played out in tax and family law.
