OBJECTIVE: Addiction to opium and heroin is not only an important social and individual problem in the world but it also affects the human physiology and multiple systems. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of chronic heroin consumption on basal and vagus electrical-stimulated total gastric acid and pepsin secretion in rats. METHODS: The study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran from August 2002 to June 2003. Both male and female rats weighing 200-250g were used. Rats received daily doses of heroin intraperitoneally starting from 0.2 mg/kg to 0.1mg/kg/day …

Endocrinopathies In Patients With Thalassemias, Abdulmohsen H. Al-Elq, Hussain H. Al-Saeed
Saudi Medical Journal
Thalassemia major is a hereditary disorder of hemoglobin synthesis resulting in severe anemia. Treatment consists of multiple blood transfusions, a complication of which is iron overload. Excessive iron is then deposited in almost all tissues but primarily in the liver, heart and the endocrine glands. Lately, desferrioxamine has been used as a chelating agent in an attempt to prevent the complications of tissue damage by iron deposition. Early introduction of the chelating agent to combat iron overload in vulnerable organs leads to improved life expectancy. However, these patients often present with multiple endocrine dysfunction such as growth failure, hypogonadism, abnormalities …

Annually, all the undergraduates of Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya are required to prepare a final project as part of the degree requirement. It is hoped that the student will be apply concepts learned in the university into the production of the project. For my final project, I have chosen to do a study and design of a three-dimensional (3D) integration tool which able to integrate 3D objects into the virtual environment. This is a group project that develops a tool which is user-friendly and suitable for user who always desire to integrate 3D objects …

Longevity Research And Bioethics, Robert A. Bohrer
Longevity Research And Bioethics, Robert A. Bohrer
Faculty Scholarship
AS THE PACE OF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCE accelerates and the era of globalization brings new threats as well as new promises, the world of biotechnology is increasingly forced to confront bioethical issues that once would have been merely theoretical discussions of purely speculative issues in the distant future. This article is intended to provide a perspective on the general problem of ethical frameworks in social decision making and provide an introduction to three fundamental ethical systems: utilitarianism, Kantianism, and Rawlsian justice or fairness. Those frameworks can be used to discuss most areas of significant ethical controversy in biotechnology; however, the focus …

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews
Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
In 1990, one-fourth of all national television commercials contained disclosures, yet none of the disclosures adhered to all of the Federal Trade Commission's "clear and conspicuous" standard (CCS). As a result of marketplace changes and a 2001 Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division joint workshop, the authors anticipate an increase in the number of disclosures and greater adherence to the CCS. The authors find a significant increase in disclosure incidence; however, adherence declines or remains unchanged for most individual guidelines. Finally, the authors provide public policy implications and offer suggestions to increase adherence to the CCS.
Simultaneous Measurement Of Middle-Ear Input Impedance And Forward/Reverse Transmission In Cat, Susan E. Voss, Christopher A. Shera
Simultaneous Measurement Of Middle-Ear Input Impedance And Forward/Reverse Transmission In Cat, Susan E. Voss, Christopher A. Shera
Engineering: Faculty Publications
Reported here is a technique for measuring forward and reverse middle-ear transmission that exploits distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) to drive the middle ear "in reverse" without opening the inner ear. The technique allows measurement of DPOAEs, middle-ear input impedance, and forward and reverse middle-ear transfer functions in the same animal. Intermodulation distortion in the cochlea generates a DPOAE at frequency 2f1-f 2 measurable in both ear-canal pressure and the velocity of the stapes. The forward transfer function is computed from stapes velocities and corresponding ear-canal pressures measured at the two primary frequencies; the reverse transfer function is computed from velocity …

An Examination Of Patents, Licensing, Research Tools, And The Tragedy Of The Anticommons In Biotechnology Innovation, Michael S. Mireles
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The continued development of and affordable access to potentially life saving pharmaceuticals, gene therapies and diagnostics is unquestionably a socially important issue. However, crafting government policy to encourage the development of and allowing affordable access to those services and products is difficult. On one hand, the development of those services and products requires a large investment of funds because of the complexity, collaborative nature, and uncertainty of the development of those products and services. Accordingly, investors require the safety of strong and stable patent rights to ensure a return on their investment in the development of a commercial end-product or …

Occipital Nerve Block Rapidly Eliminates Allodynia Far From The Site Of Headache: A Case Report, William B. Young, Valentin Mateos, Avi Ashkenazi
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Seventy to 80% of persons with migraine develop allodynia during the course of a severe attack. During a migraine attack, allodynia spreads topographically to extratrigeminal territory. Dynamic mechanical allodynia, otherwise known as brush allodynia (BA), is a subtype of allodynia that is easily tested. Ashkenazi & Young recently reported on the immediate benefits of greater occipital nerve (GON) block on brush allodynia and pain in migraine and in cluster headache. In these studies, testing was performed at fixed sites in the trigeminal and cervical distributions. Allodynia in thoracic dermatomes was not studied.
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Environment, Cass R. Sunstein
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Environment, Cass R. Sunstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This review-essay explores the uses and limits of cost-benefit analysis in the context of environmental protection, focusing on three recent books: Priceless, by Frank Ackerman and Lisa Heinzerling; Cellular Phones, Public Fears, and A Culture of Precaution, by Adam Burgess; and Catastrophe: Risk and Response, by Richard A. Posner. The review-essay emphasizes three principal limitations on the use of cost-benefit analysis. First, it is important to distinguish between the easy cases for cost-benefit analysis, in which the beneficiaries of regulation pay all or almost all of its cost, from the harder cases, in which the beneficiaries pay little for the …
External Influences Of Children's Socialization To Gender Roles, Sarah A. Chartschlaa
External Influences Of Children's Socialization To Gender Roles, Sarah A. Chartschlaa
Senior Honors Theses
It is evident in North American society that there are certain roles placed on boys and girls in accordance with their gender. These gender roles are imposed on children from birth and are taught until eventually they are accepted as absolute truth. Newborn babies are carried out of the hospital in either a pink blanket or a blue blanket depending on gender. Gifts of trucks or dolls are given to toddlers depending on the child's sex. Stories about princesses are read to little girls, while stories of dragons and swords are read to little boys. This socialization of gender roles …
