A "Maximal Tree" Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor System., Haiying Sun Oct 2003

A "Maximal Tree" Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor System., Haiying Sun

Student Work

The problem of scheduling tasks across distributed system has been approved to be NP-complete in its general case. When communication cost among system processors is not considered, polynominal-time optimal algorithms for solving scheduling problem are exit only in three special cases. In attempting to solve the problem in the general case, a number of heuristics have been developed. These algorithms intend to reduce the input task graph to one of the special cases and then optimal scheduling can be obtained accordingly. In this paper, we study all these heuristics, and present a improved heuristic --- “Maximal Tree graph approach for …

Using Polvika's Model To Create A Service-Learning Partnership, Gwendolyn F. Foss, Maria M. Bonaiuto, Z. Sue Johnson, Dee M. Moreland Oct 2003

Using Polvika's Model To Create A Service-Learning Partnership, Gwendolyn F. Foss, Maria M. Bonaiuto, Z. Sue Johnson, Dee M. Moreland

Partnerships/Community

Collaboration can maximize limited resources of universities, school systems, and public health departments by offering learning from experience. Polvika's theoretical model and principles from Community-Campus Partnerships for Health guided development of a service-learning partnership among a university, a county health department, and an alternative school in a large public school district. Of three commonly identified patterns of service-learning, this partnership demonstrated the pattern that equally emphasizes service to a community or agency, and mutual learning by all participants. All organizations in the partnership share a common goal to optimize the health of children in schools, and to provide quality learning …

Real Service = Real Learning: Making Political Science Relevant Through Service-Learning, Susan Dicklitch Oct 2003

Real Service = Real Learning: Making Political Science Relevant Through Service-Learning, Susan Dicklitch

Service Learning, General

When we open ourselves up to those around us, asking for and offering help and support, we discover our strengths and passions we never knew we had. We begin to reconnect with our fellow human beings, with our wisest and most human instincts, and with the core of who we are, which we call our soul. -(Paul Rogat Loeb, Soul of a Citizen) The perennial problem for the scholar and educator is how to combine scholarly interests with classroom material. Academics have often been castigated for living in the "ivory tower," for being uninterested in the real world, and for …

Il-7 Enhances Peripheral T Cell Reconstitution After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation., Onder Alpdogan, Stephanie J Muriglan, Jeffrey M Eng, Lucy M Willis, Andrew S Greenberg, Barry J Kappel, Marcel R M Van Den Brink Oct 2003

Il-7 Enhances Peripheral T Cell Reconstitution After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation., Onder Alpdogan, Stephanie J Muriglan, Jeffrey M Eng, Lucy M Willis, Andrew S Greenberg, Barry J Kappel, Marcel R M Van Den Brink

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

We used clinically relevant murine allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) models to study the mechanisms by which IL-7 administration can improve posttransplant peripheral T cell reconstitution. After transplant we could distinguish two populations of mature donor T cells: (a) alloreactive T cells with decreased expression of CD127 (IL-7 receptor alpha chain) and (b) nonalloreactive T cells, which express CD127 and undergo homeostatic proliferation. IL-7 administration increased the homeostatic proliferation of nonalloreactive T cells, but had no effect on alloreactive T cells and the development of graft-versus-host disease. Allogeneic transplant of purified hematopoietic stem cells and adoptive transfer of thymocytes into …

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan Oct 2003

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan

Michigan Law Review

The Logic of Collective Action has for decades supplied the logic of public-policy analysis. In this pioneering application of public choice theory, Mancur Olson elegantly punctured the premise - shared by a variety of political theories - that individuals can be expected to act consistently with the interest of the groups to which they belong. Absent externally imposed incentives, wealth-maximizing individuals, he argued, will rarely find it in their interest to contribute to goods that benefit the group as a whole, but rather will "free ride" on the contributions that other group members make. As a result, too few individuals …
