Lessons From A Quiet Classic, Daniel R. Brooks
Lessons From A Quiet Classic, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Parasitology has a rich tradition of studies linking taxonomy, ecology, and life cycles and development. This tradition has produced an enormous amount of empirical evidence demonstrating that parasites form highly integrated reproductive-developmental-ecological systems that are highly persistent through space and time. As well, phylogenetic studies of parasites, especially of parasitic platyhelminths, represent 1 of the most progressive areas of systematic biology. Consequently, parasitologists should be at the forefront of research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) and integrative biology, and parasite systems should be model systems of choice for those research programs. Species of the digenean, Alloglossidium, provide a superb …

Taxonomic Revision Of Rhinebothroides (Eucestoda: Tetraphyllidea: Phyllobothriidae), Parasites Of Neotropical Freshwater Stingrays (Rajiformes: Myliobatoidei: Potamotrygonidae), Fernando P.L. Marques, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Extensive new collections of specimens of Rhinebothroides spp. from a wide range of Neotropical freshwater potamotrygonid stingrays in numerous localities permitted critical evaluation of the validity of the 7 nominal species in the genus. Some qualitative characters previously used in the taxonomy of this group are highly variable within and among populations, and most morphometric and meristic characters thought to have taxonomic value for this group overlapped among several previously defined nominal species. Characters that were consistent throughout populations and that clearly define morphotypes supported recognition of four species: R. freitasi (syn. R. circularisi and R. venezuelensis), R. glandularis …

A New Species Of Syncuaria Gilbert, 1927 (Nematoda: Acuarioidea: Acuariidae) In The Wood Stork, Mycteria Americana L. (Aves: Ciconiiformes: Ciconiidae) From The Área De Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Luping Zhang, Daniel R. Brooks, Douglas Causey
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Syncuaria mycteriae n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuarioidea) was collected under the lining of the gizzard of a wood stork, Mycteria americana L., from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The new species can be distinguished from all known species of Syncuaria by having irregular dotted ornamentations on the caudal alae of males, a complex distal end of the left spicule comprising three protuberances, and a spicule ratio of 1:9.3. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of 11 Syncuaria spp. based on 9 morphological characters produced two equally parsimonious cladograms with a consistency index of 85%, differing only in the placement of S. hargilae …

Two Species Of Acuaria Bremser, 1811 (Nematoda: Acuarioidea: Acuariidae) In Passerine Birds From The Área De Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Luping Zhang, Daniel R. Brooks, Douglas Causey
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Two species of Acuaria were collected from passerine birds from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Acuaria mayori Lent, Freitas and Proenca, 1945, was collected from Myiarchus nuttingi. Specimens from Costa Rica differ from the original description by having a spicule ratio of 1:1.5-1.7 versus 1:1.43-1.47, as well as shorter spicules and female tails. Acuaria wangi n. sp. in Hylophylax naevioides and Gymnopithys leucaspis resembles A. alii, A. crami, A. cyanocitta, A. minuta, A. pattoni, and A. cissae by having cordons extending posteriorly to the anterior portion of the glandular esophagus. Building Regional Security Cooperation In The Western Hemisphere: Issues And Recommendations, Max G. Manwaring Dr., Wendy Fontela Col, Mary Grizzard Dr., Dennis M. Rempe Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Dr. Max Manwaring and his team of conference rapporteurs have generated a substantive set of issues and recommendations. They have provided a viable means by which to begin the implementation of serious hemispheric security cooperation. Additionally, we have included U.S. Southern Command Commander General Hill's conference luncheon remarks as the Preface to our Issues and Recommendations report. The intent is to provide more context for readers who might not have attended the conference. We have also asked Ambassador Ambler Moss, the Director of the North-South Center, to expand that context with a short Afterward. This report comes at a critical …
Physical Activity And Stroke Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Chong Do Lee, Aaron R. Folsom, Steven N. Blair
Physical Activity And Stroke Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Chong Do Lee, Aaron R. Folsom, Steven N. Blair
Faculty Publications
Background and Purpose - Whether physical activity reduces stroke risk remains controversial. We used a meta-analysis to examine the overall association between physical activity or cardiorespiratory fitness and stroke incidence or mortality.
Methods - We searched MEDLINE from 1966 to 2002 and identified 23 studies (18 cohort and 5 case-control) that met inclusion criteria. We estimated the overall relative risk (RR) of stroke incidence or mortality for highly and moderately active individuals versus individuals with low levels of activity using the general variance-based method.
Results - The meta-analysis documented that there was a reduction in stroke risk for active or …

Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang
Automatic Video Summarization By Graph Modeling, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a unified approach for summarization based on the analysis of video structures and video highlights. Our approach emphasizes both the content balance and perceptual quality of a summary. Normalized cut algorithm is employed to globally and optimally partition a video into clusters. A motion attention model based on human perception is employed to compute the perceptual quality of shots and clusters. The clusters, together with the computed attention values, form a temporal graph similar to Markov chain that inherently describes the evolution and perceptual importance of video clusters. In our application, the flow of a temporal graph is …
Making The Key Agreement Protocol In Mobile Ad Hoc Network More Efficient, Gang Yao, Kui Ren, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Dengguo Feng
Making The Key Agreement Protocol In Mobile Ad Hoc Network More Efficient, Gang Yao, Kui Ren, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Dengguo Feng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mobile ad hoc networks offer convenient infrastructureless communications over the shared wireless channel. However, the nature of mobile ad hoc networks makes them vulnerable to security attacks, such as passive eavesdropping over the wireless channel and denial of service attacks by malicious nodes. To ensure the security, several cryptography protocols are implemented. Due to the resource scarcity in mobile ad hoc networks, the protocols must be communication efficient and need as less computational power as possible. Broadcast communication is an important operation for many application in mobile ad hoc networks. To securely broadcast a message, all the members in the …

Variations Of Diffie-Hellman Problem, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, Huafei Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper studies various computational and decisional Diffie-Hellman problems by providing reductions among them in the high granularity setting. We show that all three variations of computational Diffie-Hellman problem: square Diffie-Hellman problem, inverse Diffie-Hellman problem and divisible Diffie-Hellman problem, are equivalent with optimal reduction. Also, we are considering variations of the decisional Diffie-Hellman problem in single sample and polynomial samples settings, and we are able to show that all variations are equivalent except for the argument DDH ⇐ SDDH. We are not able to prove or disprove this statement, thus leave an interesting open problem. Keywords: Diffie-Hellman problem, Square Diffie-Hellman …
Moorean Absurdity And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams
Moorean Absurdity And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
G. E. Moore observed that to for me to assert, “I went to the pictures last Tuesday but I don’t believe that I did” would be “absurd” (1942: 543). Over half a century later, the explanation of the nature of this absurdity remains problematic. Such assertions are unlike semantically odd Liar-type assertions such as “What I’m now saying is not true” since my Moorean assertion might be true: you may consistently imagine a situation in which I went to the pictures last Tuesday but fail to believe that I did. Moreover, if you contradict my assertion then your words, “If …

Equitable Apportionment Of Ecosystem Services: New Water Law For A New Water Age, J.B. Ruhl
Equitable Apportionment Of Ecosystem Services: New Water Law For A New Water Age, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This article examines the interstate water controversy between Florida, Georgia, and Alabama regarding allocation of water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin (ACF). The three states have been unable after 20 years of negotiation to resolve conflicts between urbanization in Atlanta, commercial uses in Alabama, and ecological protection in Florida. This article proposes that, were the states to seek apportionment of water by the Supreme Court under the Court's doctrine of equitable apportionment, the ecosystem services flowing within the ACF should be an integral allocation factor in deciding the flow regime Georgia and Alabama must ensure enters the Florida portion of …
Judicial Independence And The Ambiguity Of Article Iii Protections, Tracey E. George
Judicial Independence And The Ambiguity Of Article Iii Protections, Tracey E. George
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Is the federal judiciary truly an independent body? A quick glance at the Constitution would suggest the answer is yes. The Constitution provides for life tenure and a difficult removal process for federal judges that together, as the common wisdom goes, shield federal judges from the shifting winds of the more political branches and the public at large. The author of this essay argues, however, that on a closer examination of the protections provided for by the Constitution, judicial independence might be more mirage than truism. Threats to judicial independence arise not only externally through the actions of the other …
Images Of Older Persons In Hong Kong Popular Films, Nga Man Wong
Images Of Older Persons In Hong Kong Popular Films, Nga Man Wong
Lingnan Theses
Film watching is a popular leisure activity in modern society. Films, as a medium, provide powerful tools to deliver social messages and to create images of particular social groups. The cinematic images portrayed by films toward a particular social group may consequently shape our social perceptions and expectations of that social group. The ways that cinematic images portray older persons are, therefore, a potentially major source for detecting social values and views about them.
As some cinematic images tend to reflect social attitudes and behaviours, the present research aimed at investigating how popular films portray the images of older persons. …

Filling In The ‘Larger Puzzle’: Clinical Scholarship In The Wake Of The Lawyering Process, Susan L. Kay, Frank Bloch, Susan L. Brooks, Alex J. Hurder
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Gary Bellow's and Bea Moulton's The Lawyering Process challenged conventional legal education on every front, from the types of material included to the questions asked about law and lawyers. Their book has inspired a generation (or more) of clinicians to teach and think about law differently. In this article, the authors focus on the impact Bellow's and Moulton's book has had as a teaching text and as early clinical scholarship. The authors discuss four topics addressed in The Lawyering Process--the public role of lawyers, ethics and professionalism, theory of lawyering, and the clinical methodology-and how those topics are addressed in …
Toward Taping, Christopher Slobogin
Toward Taping, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Numerous authors, from all points on the political spectrum, have advocated that police interrogations be taped. But police rarely record custodial questioning, at least in full, and only a handful of courts have found this failure objectionable. This commentary outlines three different constitutional grounds for mandating that such recording become a routine practice. To set up the constitutional argument, the article first outlines why taping is needed despite the elaborate rules that now govern interrogation. Put simply, the reasoning is as follows: the Miranda regime has failed, voluntariness should once again be the focal point of interrogation regulation, and taping …

Proposal For A Model State Watershed Management Act, J.B. Ruhl, C.L. Lant, Steven E. Kraft, Leslie A. Duram, Tim Loftus
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
During the Montana Constitutional Convention of 1889, John Wesley Powell, envisioning a landscape of watershed commonwealths, proposed that Montana adopt watersheds as the boundaries of its counties. The idea did not catch on. Over time, the power of local governments to regulate land use has grown immensely, but the misfit between their political boundaries and environmental policy problem sheds has persisted. As our understanding of ecosystem dynamics improves, however, natural resources management policy is gravitating, once again, to the watershed as an appropriate unit of governance. Many federal and state natural resource management initiatives have come on line in the …
The New Labor Market For Lawyers: Will Female Lawyers Still Earn Less?, Joni Hersch
The New Labor Market For Lawyers: Will Female Lawyers Still Earn Less?, Joni Hersch
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
To examine the magnitude and source of the gender pay disparity among lawyers, this paper uses data from a large national survey reporting individual information for 1990 and 1993 on a wide array of work related and personal characteristics. The data show a large earnings shortfall for female lawyers earning their J.D. before 1990, even after controlling for differences in work history, hours worked, type of employer, and family characteristics. In contrast, female lawyers earning their J.D. between 1990 and 1993 earn more than their male counterparts. By examining the sources of the gender pay gap among the older cohort …
Constitutional Existence Conditions And Judicial Review, Michael C. Dorf, Matthew D. Adler
Constitutional Existence Conditions And Judicial Review, Michael C. Dorf, Matthew D. Adler
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Although critics of judicial review sometimes call for making the entire Constitution nonjusticiable, many familiar norms of constitutional law state what we call "existence conditions" that are necessarily enforced by judicial actors charged with the responsibility of applying, and thus as a preliminary step, identifying, propositions of sub-constitutional law such as statutes. Article I, Section 7, which sets forth the procedures by which a bill becomes a law, is an example: a putative law that did not go through the Article I, Section 7 process and does not satisfy an alternative test for legal validity (such as the treaty-making provision …

忠信與操縱 : 當代基督教《聖經》中文譯本研究, Cho Yuen Lam
Lingnan Theses
Rhetorically Reasonable Police Practices: Viewing The Supreme Court's Multiple Discourse Paths, Kathryn R. Urbonya
Rhetorically Reasonable Police Practices: Viewing The Supreme Court's Multiple Discourse Paths, Kathryn R. Urbonya
Faculty Publications
This Article analyzes the United States Supreme Court's numerous and shifting rhetorical discourse paths for declaring whether particular governmental practices constituted unreasonable searches or seizures under the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution. It examines how the Court has manipulated classic discourse paths arising from text, history, precedent and structure. It reveals that among and within each of these categories, the Court has created conflicting approaches. The Article argues that the Court's construction of Fourth Amendment reasonableness has depended upon which discourse paths it has selected as well as how it has characterized the values embedded within the discourse …
