A Structured Content Analysis Of Five Contemporary Etude Books For The Violin, Michael Kim Buckles Jan 2003

A Structured Content Analysis Of Five Contemporary Etude Books For The Violin, Michael Kim Buckles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The use of etudes has long been a time-honored device in developing, shaping, and expanding the technical skills of the violinist. Certain etude books, most notably those by Kreutzer, Rode, and Dont, have become standard. Yet, these classic etude books prove to be insufficient for the preparation of atonal, contemporary literature. Individual accounts by violin scholars and pedagogues indicate that there is a major void in contemporary etude literature for the violin, yet when the totality of what violin scholars and pedagogues have written over time is considered, it appears by numbers alone that no void exists today. While certainly …

Solid-Phase Dna Sequencing Reactions Performed In Micro-Capillary Reactors And Solid-Phase Reversible Immobilization In Microfluidic Chips For Purification Of Dye-Labeled Dna Sequencing Fragments, Yichuan Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation involves micro-capillary reactors for solid phase DNA sequencing, the identification of dye terminator sequencing fragments with time-resolved methods, and purification of dye-labeled DNA fragments using solid- phase reversible immobilization in microfluidic chips. Solid-phase micro-reactors have been prepared for DNA sequencing applications using slab gel electrophoresis. A PCR product was immobilized to the interior wall of a fused-silica capillary tube via a biotin-streptavidin linkage. Solid-phase sequencing was carried out in micro-capillary reactors using a four-lane, single color dye primer chemistry strategy. The read length was found to be 589 bases. The complementary DNA fragments generated …

Bureaucratic Influence In Congressional Roll-Call Voting, William Blair Jan 2003

Bureaucratic Influence In Congressional Roll-Call Voting, William Blair

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is on one of the many relationships that exist between the bureaucracy and government: decision-making by elected representatives and the political influence of government employees on their decision-making. Specifically, it is with bureaucrats and the degree to which they may utilize political influence to create a disproportionate influence over government policy and decision-making in the United States House of Representatives. I argue that the inherent qualities of bureaucrats suggest that they are significant and influential constituency for representatives. They are an identifiable constituency to representatives, and have the means and opportunity to wield political influence. …

The Effect On Water Quality Of Riverine Input Into Coastal Wetlands, Robert Raymond Lane Jan 2003

The Effect On Water Quality Of Riverine Input Into Coastal Wetlands, Robert Raymond Lane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on impact on water quality of two freshwater diversions, the Bonnet Carre Spillway and the Caernarvon freshwater diversion, as well as the Atchafalaya River Estuarine Complex. As water passed through the Bonnet Carre Spillway, there were reductions in total suspended sediment concentrations of 82-83%, in nitrite+nitrate of 28-42%, in total nitrogen (TN) of 26-30%, and in total phosphorus (TP) of 50-59%. The Si:N ratio generally increased and the N:P ratio decreased from the river to the plume edge in Lake Pontchartrain. At the Caernarvon diversion, there were reductions in concentrations of dissolved inorganic Si, N, and P …

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser Jan 2003

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conserving ecologically valuable areas is proclaimed a priority by governments, institutions, and citizens throughout the world. Preventing the erosion of the remaining indigenous cultures also receives widespread support. In response to these desires, numerous protected areas now exist; spaces that theoretically should attain both ecological and cultural preservation. However, many of these areas are found within a larger setting plagued by ongoing struggles to meet basic needs. Often these larger problems create a challenge to, if not work in opposition to, the original aims of protected areas. This study of nine communities looks at these and related issues in the …

Effects Of Submergence And Hypoxia On The Growth And Anatomy Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Seedlings, Denise M. D'Abundo Jan 2003

Effects Of Submergence And Hypoxia On The Growth And Anatomy Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Seedlings, Denise M. D'Abundo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Aerenchyma - a specialized tissue with abundant, interconnected gas spaces - facilitates oxygen transport from shoots to roots in many emergent wetland plants. The importance of oxygen transport to root elongation and aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was demonstrated in this investigation. Germinated seeds of Lemont (a commercial cultivar) and red rice (an agricultural weed) were positioned at 4.5, 2.5, or 1.0 cm below the surface of aerated or hypoxic water to control the duration of leaf submergence and the availability of oxygen. Primary root and leaf lengths were measured daily. Aerenchyma was compared among emergent and …

Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz Jan 2003

Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation considers the proper mathematical description for the physical problem of a miscible solute undergoing longitudinal convective-dispersive transport with constant production, first-order decay, and equilibrium sorption in a porous medium. Initial and input concentrations may be any continuously differentiable functions and the mathematical system is articulated for a finite domain. This domain yields a mass balance which requires Robin (i.e., third-type) boundaries, which describe a continuous flux but a discontinuous resident-concentration. The discontinuity in the resident concentration at the outflow boundary yields an underdetermined system when the exit concentration is not experimentally measured. This is resolved by defining the …

The Invasive Tropical Shrub Clidemia Hirta (Melastomataceae) In Its Native And Introduced Ranges: Tests Of Hypotheses Of Invasion, Saara Jennie Dewalt Jan 2003

The Invasive Tropical Shrub Clidemia Hirta (Melastomataceae) In Its Native And Introduced Ranges: Tests Of Hypotheses Of Invasion, Saara Jennie Dewalt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Exotic pest plants often grow to greater stature, become more abundant, and display increased shade tolerance in their introduced ranges than in their native ranges. These differences have been hypothesized to result from genetic shifts in biomass allocation, growth, or photosynthesis between genotypes in native and introduced ranges or from plastic, phenotypic responses to different environmental conditions, such as lower herbivore or fungal pest loads in areas of introduction. I used the tropical shrub Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) as a model exotic pest plant to test these two non-mutually exclusive hypotheses of invasion. Clidemia hirta invades forest understory and is more …

A Comparison Of Life Histories And Ecological Aspects Among Snappers (Pisces: Lutjanidae), Fernando Martinez-Andrade Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Life Histories And Ecological Aspects Among Snappers (Pisces: Lutjanidae), Fernando Martinez-Andrade

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An extensive search for data on life-history and ecological variables was conducted for a representative number of the species within the family Lutjanidae. After creating different databases and standardizing all data, these variables were examined in statistical, correlation and graphic analyses. Additionally, a series of Principal Component Analyses were used to examine patterns among variables. Life-history variables included age at length zero, asymptotic length, maximum length, longevity, asymptotic weight, length at maturity, age at maturity, reproductive life span, growth rate and mortality rate. Ecological variables included latitudinal and vertical distribution, habitat selection (represented by substrate type), and spawning seasons. The …

A Hybrid Collocation Method For Volterra Integral Equations With Weakly Singular Kernels, Yanzhao Cao, Terry Herdman, Yuesheng Xu Jan 2003

A Hybrid Collocation Method For Volterra Integral Equations With Weakly Singular Kernels, Yanzhao Cao, Terry Herdman, Yuesheng Xu

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The commonly used graded piecewise polynomial collocation method for weakly singular Volterra integral equations may cause serious round-off error problems due to its use of extremely nonuniform partitions and the sensitivity of such time-dependent equations to round-off errors. The singularity preserving ( nonpolynomial) collocation method is known to have only local convergence. To overcome the shortcoming of these well-known methods, we introduce a hybrid collocation method for solving Volterra integral equations of the second kind with weakly singular kernels. In this hybrid method we combine a singularity preserving ( nonpolynomial) collocation method used near the singular point of the derivative …

Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang Jan 2003

Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Suppose $S$ is a parametrized surface in complex projective 3-space $mathbf{P}^3$ given as the image of $phi: mathbf{P}^1 imes mathbf{P}^1 o mathbf{P}^3$. The implicitization problem is to compute an implicit equation $F=0$ of $S$ using the parametrization $phi$. An algorithm using syzygies exists for computing $F$ if $phi$ has no base points, i.e. $phi$ is everywhere defined. This work is an extension of this algorithm to the case of a surface with multiple base points of total multiplicity k. We accomplish this in three chapters. In Chapter 2, we develop the concept and properties of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in biprojective spaces. …

Collapse Of Spatiotemporal Chaos, Renate Wackerbauer, Kenneth Showalter Jan 2003

Collapse Of Spatiotemporal Chaos, Renate Wackerbauer, Kenneth Showalter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The transient nature of spatiotemporal chaos is examined in reaction-diffusion systems with coexisting stable states. We find the apparent asymptotic spatiotemporal chaos of the Gray-Scott system to be transient, with the average transient lifetime increasing exponentially with medium size. The collapse of spatiotemporal chaos arises when statistical spatial correlations produce a quasihomogeneous medium, and the system obeys its zero-dimensional dynamics to relax to its stable asymptotic state.

Self-Efficacy, Motivation, And Outcome Expectation Correlates Of College Students' Intention Certainty, Carol Couvillion Landry Jan 2003

Self-Efficacy, Motivation, And Outcome Expectation Correlates Of College Students' Intention Certainty, Carol Couvillion Landry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored relationships between Self-Efficacy, Motivation, and Outcome Expectations and Intention Certainty. Intention Certainty is a new variable created for this study and comprised of existing conceptions of intention and decision certainty. The purpose of this study was fourfold. This study attempted to expand our understanding of the college retention dropout issue by exploring relationships between psychologically rich variables. Second, this study provided information considered useful for framing future research on retention from a different perspective that focuses on characteristics of individuals who stay, rather than those who leave higher education with the consideration of psychological constructs. Further, this …

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping For Agronomic And Fiber Quality Traits In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Using Molecular Markers, Muhanad Walid Akash Jan 2003

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping For Agronomic And Fiber Quality Traits In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Using Molecular Markers, Muhanad Walid Akash

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The breeding of Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars that combine high yield and fiber quality is a major challenge to the breeder. The understanding of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) contributing to agronomic and fiber quality traits offers an excellent route to solve this problem. A QTL analysis was carried out after an F2:3 population composed of 138 lines, derived from the intraspecific cross between Paymaster 54 and PeeDee 2165, was developed and a linkage map including 143 AFLP markers was constructed. The F2:3 population was grown in two locations, Alexandria and Baton Rouge in LA. The …

Granulometry, Chemistry And Physical Interactions Of Non-Colloidal Particulate Matter Transported By Urban Storm Water, Hong Lin Jan 2003

Granulometry, Chemistry And Physical Interactions Of Non-Colloidal Particulate Matter Transported By Urban Storm Water, Hong Lin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Urban rainfall-runoff is a major source of anthropogenic pollutions to the natural water bodies. Particulate matter generated from anthropogenic environments and activities is a constituent of environmental concern as well as a carrier substrate for reactive contaminants such as metals. Partitioning, transport and transformation of particulate-bound contaminants are determined by the granulometry, physical and geochemical properties of the particulate carriers. Previous research emphasized in the transport of colloidal and suspended particles in rainfall-runoff. The settleable and sediment material were ignored though they are a major granulometric fraction which may contain most of the sorbed or transported constituents such as metals, …

Investigation Of Bond Slip Between Concrete And Steel Reinforcement Under Dynamic Loading Conditions, John Henry Weathersby Jan 2003

Investigation Of Bond Slip Between Concrete And Steel Reinforcement Under Dynamic Loading Conditions, John Henry Weathersby

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Structural failures during recent earthquakes and terrorist attacks have demonstrated shortcomings in the design procedures for reinforced concrete structures. Earlier research has demonstrated that a major limitation of the Finite Element (FE) modeling of the response of reinforced concrete is the accurate modeling of the interaction of the concrete with the steel reinforcement. Presently, there are insufficient data on the dynamic nonlinear interaction between the concrete material and the steel reinforcement to develop a numerical model of this interaction. The primary objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the dynamic interaction (bond slip) of reinforcement with concrete and gain …

On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi Jan 2003

On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dynamically reconfigurable architectures have the ability to change their structure at each step of a computation. This dissertation studies various aspects of implementing dynamic reconfiguration, ranging from hardware building blocks and low-level architectures to modeling issues and high-level algorithm design. First we derive conditions under which classes of communication sets can be optimally scheduled on the circuit-switched tree (CST). Then we present a method to configure the CST to perform in constant time all communications scheduled for a step. This results in a constant time implementation of a step of a segmentable bus, a fundamental dynamically reconfigurable structure. We introduce …

Of Fathers And Sons: Generational Conflicts And Literary Lineage--The Case Of Ernest Hemingway And Ernest Gaines, Wolfgang Lepschy Jan 2003

Of Fathers And Sons: Generational Conflicts And Literary Lineage--The Case Of Ernest Hemingway And Ernest Gaines, Wolfgang Lepschy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Focusing on the depiction of the father-son relationship and the generational conflicts in their works, as well as the metaphorical literary father-son relationship between the two authors, this dissertation offers an intertextual reading of the works of Ernest Hemingway and Ernest J. Gaines. Part One examines Hemingway’s Nick Adams stories that feature the young hero’s growing disillusionment with and eventual rejection of his home and family. Parodying conventional stereotypes about Native American ways of life, Hemingway deconstructs prevailing notions of race by aligning Nick’s father with the wilderness and the Indians. Gaines’s earliest short stories focus on a reunion of …

Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez Jan 2003

Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Most of the research in the field of molecular imprinting has been focused on the development of new functional monomers, in order to improve the molecular recognition properties afforded by these materials. The role of the crosslinking monomer has often been overlooked, since it is considered an inert component that only provides a scaffold to support the binding sites. However, the crosslinking monomer represents a high percent (80-90%) of the composition of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), which can have a large influence on the MIPs properties. This research addresses the design, synthesis, and applications of new crosslinking monomers for molecular …

Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows In Squares Of Graphs, Rui Xu, Cun-Quan Zhang Jan 2003

Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows In Squares Of Graphs, Rui Xu, Cun-Quan Zhang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

It was conjectured by Tutte that every 4-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of graphs whose squares admit nowhere-zero $3$-flows and thus confirm Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture for the family of squares of graphs.

The Extinction Properties Of Reddened Galactic Ob Sightlines, Lynne Angela Valencic Jan 2003

The Extinction Properties Of Reddened Galactic Ob Sightlines, Lynne Angela Valencic

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A solid understanding of dust grains and their extinction properties is needed to better remove the effects of extinction from data and to comprehend the nature of the processes which modify grains. This requires a large sample of Galactic sightlines, extending far beyond the solar neighborhood, sampling not only a large volume of space but also a wide variety of environments. To fulfill this requirement, a database of sightlines toward 426 young, reddened stars was constructed using extinction curves based on IUE spectra. The curves were fit and the Fitzpatrick-Massa (FM) parameters were found. FM parameters allow for a quantitative …

Crowded And Selective Ultrafilters Under The Covering Property Axiom, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2003

Crowded And Selective Ultrafilters Under The Covering Property Axiom, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the paper we formulate an axiom CPA_{prism}^{game}, which is the most prominent version of the Covering Property Axiom CPA, and discuss several of its implications. In particular, we show that it implies that the following cardinal characteristics of continuum are equal to \omega1, while \continuum=\omega2: the independence number i, the reaping number r, the almost disjoint number a, and the ultrafilter base number u. We will also show that CPA_{prism}^{game} implies the existence of crowded and selective ultrafilters as well as nonselective P-points. In addition we prove that under CPA_{prism}^{game} every …

Closely Related G-Protein-Coupled Receptors Use Multiple And Distinct Domains On G-Protein Α-Subunits For Selective Coupling, Janna E. Slessareva, Hongzheng Ma, Karyn M. Depree, Lori A. Flood, Hyunsu Bae, Theresa M. Cabrera-Vera, Heidi E. Hamm, Stephen G. Graber Jan 2003

Closely Related G-Protein-Coupled Receptors Use Multiple And Distinct Domains On G-Protein Α-Subunits For Selective Coupling, Janna E. Slessareva, Hongzheng Ma, Karyn M. Depree, Lori A. Flood, Hyunsu Bae, Theresa M. Cabrera-Vera, Heidi E. Hamm, Stephen G. Graber

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The molecular basis of selectivity in G-protein receptor coupling has been explored by comparing the abilities of G-protein heterotrimers containing chimeric Galpha subunits, comprised of various regions of Gi1alpha, Gtalpha, and Gqalpha, to stabilize the high affinity agonist binding state of serotonin, adenosine, and muscarinic receptors. The data indicate that multiple and distinct determinants of selectivity exist for individual receptors. While the A1 adenosine receptor does not distinguish between Gi1alpha and Gtalpha sequences, the 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B serotonin and M2 muscarinic receptors can couple with Gi1 but not Gt. It is possible to distinguish domains that eliminate coupling and are …

Wavelet Algorithms For High-Resolution Image Reconstruction, Raymond H. Chan, Tony F. Chan, Lixin Shen, Zuowei Shen Jan 2003

Wavelet Algorithms For High-Resolution Image Reconstruction, Raymond H. Chan, Tony F. Chan, Lixin Shen, Zuowei Shen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

High-resolution image reconstruction refers to the reconstruction of high-resolution images from multiple low-resolution, shifted, degraded samples of a true image. In this paper, we analyze this problem from the wavelet point of view. By expressing the true image as a function in L(R2), we derive iterative algorithms which recover the function completely in the L sense from the given low-resolution functions. These algorithms decompose the function obtained from the previous iteration into different frequency components in the wavelet transform domain and add them into the new iterate to improve the approximation. We apply wavelet (packet) thresholding methods to denoise the …
