UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This creative thesis, a long work of fiction, is about a rock critic, Gabe Sack, who writes for a Los Angeles-based music magazine. He is tired of his job and decides to quit. However, his boss gives him one final assignment: he must track down an obscure lounge singer and write a profile of him. With his friends Staley and Darcy in tow, Gabe drives to Las Vegas. During the trip, he reflects on his life, his attitude, and his relationships with others. He senses that his job, which requires him to criticize the work of others, has had negative …
A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer
A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Previous studies have established that mental skills training is an effective intervention for improving performance in athletes. Relaxation, imagery, and mental preparation interventions have demonstrated efficacy in the improvement of athletic performance. However, relaxation combined with imagery is more effective than either one alone. Similarly, past studies have indicated mental preparation interventions may be more effective in the improvement of athletic performance when combined with other interventions. In team sports such as swimming, optimum performance has been found to improve cohesion. However, whether cohesion leads to improvements in sports performance is undetermined. In this study, a multiple baseline across team …
Recognition And Identification Of Form Document Layouts, Kai Luo
Recognition And Identification Of Form Document Layouts, Kai Luo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, a hierarchical tree representation is introduced to represent the logical structure of a form document. But different forms might have the same logical structure, so the representation will be ambiguous. In this thesis, an improvement is proposed to solve the ambiguity problem by using the physical information of the blocks. To fulfill the application of hierarchical tree representation and extract the physical information of blocks, a pixel tracing approach is used to extract form layout structures from form documents. Compared with Hough transform, the pixel tracing algorithm requires less computation. This algorithm has been tested on 50 …

"In That New World Which Is The Old": New World/Old World Inversion In Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", Oliver Quimby Melton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
"'In That New World Which Is The Old': New World/Old World Inversion In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World" examines the inversion of the concepts Old World, specifically associated with England, and New World, specifically associated with America, in the novel Brave New World. After examining and denotatively defining the terms Old World and New World, this thesis argues that the New World/Old World inversion in Huxley's dystopian novel exists because of Anglo-American cultural and political events of the 1920s and early 1930s, namely, the United States' rise as a military, political, and cultural superpower following World War I and Great …
Study Of Subthreshold Behavior Of Finfet, Balasubramanian Murugan
Study Of Subthreshold Behavior Of Finfet, Balasubramanian Murugan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study of subthreshold behavior of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is critically important in the case of submicron devices for the successful design and implementation of digital circuits. Fin Field Effect Transistor (FinFET) is considered to be an alternate MOSFET structure in the deep sub-micron regime. A 3D Poisson equation solver is employed to study the subthreshold behavior of FinFET. Based on potential distribution inside the fin, the appropriate band bending and the subthreshold value called the S-factor is calculated. It is observed that the S-factor of the device increases as the channel width, Tfin increases. This …

These ideas include: …
The Relationship Of Cell Morphology, Density, And Mechanical Properties In A Rigid Polyurethane Foam, Michelle Cameron Nelson
The Relationship Of Cell Morphology, Density, And Mechanical Properties In A Rigid Polyurethane Foam, Michelle Cameron Nelson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Polyurethane foam, used as a supporting or insulating material, is sometimes formed in complex molds with significant variations in geometry and size. This work investigates the relationships between cell morphology, density, and mechanical properties in a molded polyurethane material using relatively small cylindrical molds. Understanding these relationships will help mechanical designers analyze and predict the responses of foam components accurately; Three mold sizes are used to study changes in cell morphology (cell area, cell diameter, aspect ratio, cell angle, cell edge length, cell face thickness, and cell edge thickness), density, and mechanical properties (Young's modulus, peak yield, and collapse stress) …
A Graphical Approach For Goodness-Of-Fit Of Poisson Model, Davin P Padilla
A Graphical Approach For Goodness-Of-Fit Of Poisson Model, Davin P Padilla
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Extensive work has been done on goodness-of-fit (GOF) tests for data assumed to have come from univariate continuous distributions; however, literature on GOF procedures for univariate discrete distributions is rather sparse in compariSon The Poisson distribution in particular has received much attention in the study of GOF tests due to its numerous applications as a model for observable phenomena. Hence, we survey existing GOF tests for Poissonity and present a useful guide to the most commonly used distribution-free GOF tests in practice. We then propose and investigate a graphical test of fit for the Poisson model that is based on …
The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry
The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Due to increased competition in the restaurant industry, employers need to offer more than monetary compensation to attract quality employees. Offering these non-economic benefits, or internal services, can aid in keeping employees satisfied and committed to their organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between internal service components and organizational commitment. Data was collected from three fine-dining restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada. The original hypotheses were not supported by the research results. Yet, the study did yield evidence indicating that satisfaction with some aspects of internal services was influential in predicting organization commitment. Implications for management …

A Benefit-Cost Analysis Of An Interstate Seawater Desalination Plant Shared Between California And Nevada, Mcclain L Peterson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority (2002), increasing demands for water in southern Nevada will require the importation of additional water resources. The purpose of this thesis was to examine one possible imported resource: an interstate seawater desalination cooperative between entities in California and Nevada. This cooperative would provide a permanent transfer of Colorado River water from California to southern Nevada, in trade for a capital contribution toward California coastal seawater desalination. This study uses a benefit-cost approach as outlined in Dively and Zerbe (1994). Costs of both entities in Nevada and California were calculated and technical feasibility detailed. …

Identification Of Headers And Footers In Noisy Documents, Qin Liu
Identification Of Headers And Footers In Noisy Documents, Qin Liu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Optical Recognition Technology is typically used to convert hard copy printed material into its electronic form. Many presentational artifacts such as end-of-line hyphenations, running headers and footers are literally converted. These artifacts can possibly hinder proximity and exact match searching; This thesis develops an algorithm to extract running headers and footers from electronic documents generated by OCR. This method associates each page of the document with its neighboring pages and detects the headers and footers by comparing the page with its neighboring pages. Experiments are also taken to test the effectiveness of these algorithms.

Calibration Of Ysz Sensor For The Measurement Of Oxygen Concentration In Lbe, Ramkumar B Sivaraman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Although liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a good candidate for coolant in the sub-critical transmutation blanket, it is known to be corrosive to stainless steel tubes and containers used in nuclear installations. To prevent the long-term corrosion problem by producing and maintaining a protective oxide layer on exposed surface of stainless steel, it is essential to accurately measure and control the oxygen concentration dissolved in LBE. An automobile style voltametric oxygen sensors, with YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) as electrolyte and molten bismuth saturated with oxygen as reference was selected. An instrumentation system was designed specifically for calibrating the YSZ sensor …

After reviewing all traits, participants rated the potential date in terms of how …
Thesaurus-Aided Learning For Rule-Based Categorization Of Ocr Texts, Jeffrey Scott Coombs
Thesaurus-Aided Learning For Rule-Based Categorization Of Ocr Texts, Jeffrey Scott Coombs
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The question posed in this thesis is whether the effectiveness of the rule-based approach to automatic text categorization on OCR collections can be improved by using domain-specific thesauri. A rule-based categorizer was constructed consisting of a C++ program called C-KANT which consults documents and creates a program which can be executed by the CLIPS expert system shell. A series of tests using domain-specific thesauri revealed that a query expansion approach to rule-based automatic text categorization using domain-dependent thesauri will not improve the categorization of OCR texts. Although some improvement to categorization could be made using rules over a mixture of …

Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Contested claims about the public/private distinction have always been central to liberal democratic principles, to feminist ideologies, and (more narrowly) to domestic violence policymaKing Historically, treatment of domestic violence as a phenomenon that is relegated to the so-called 'private sphere' has served as justification for limiting such public policy remedies as prevention, intervention and recovery initiatives; From the grassroots battered women's movements of the 1970s to the current network of shelters, community agencies and advocacy groups, the last several decades have seen significant progress toward increasing public and political awareness of domestic violence. In the United States, many of these …

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo(4)(-)) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N Golli
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Perchlorate not only blocks the body's ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands' internal stores of iodine. Many of the steps that regulate metamorphosis in amphibians are also triggered by thyroid hormones therefore we investigated the ability of perchlorate to interfere with the development and metamorphosis of Rana pipiens . Aquaria containing concentrations of 40 ppb, 400 ppb, and 4000 ppb perchlorate with a 0 ppb perchlorate control as well as a magnesium control (since magnesium perchlorate was used) to evaluate the growth and development of …
The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski
The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Previous studies have indicated that carrier status has little effect on self-concept. However, rather than examine autosomal recessive illnesses, wherein genetic responsibility is shared by both parents, the present study samples women at risk of being sole carriers of an X-linked hereditary disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Previous research most often assessed global self-esteem, thus problems in particular domains (such as future parental role or desirability as a mate) have generally been overlooked. Herein, a stigmatizing process is hypothesized whereby one aspect of the self, genetic identity, may be spoiled through a diminished sense of worthiness to reproduce. Family attitudes toward …
