The research effort centers on the development of advanced numerical models to assess conditions that significantly impact the transport of volatile actinides during the melt casting process and represents a joint effort between researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer Jan 2003

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The goal of this research project is to provide technical support to process designers working on the development of the fuel cycles for transmutation applications. Detailed process models are developed to better define the impact of fuel choice on the transmuter fuel cycle, including relative process losses, waste generation, and plant capital cost. These process models provide insight regarding required plant size and number of plants needed to mesh with the fuel recycling line. They also determine requirements for automation.

Manufacturing models for large-scale production in a hot cell environment are also developed. Combined, these two models allow the assessment …

Two Colored Women's Conversation About The Relevance Of Feminist Law Journals In The Twenty-First Century, Taunya Lovell Banks, Penelope Andrews Jan 2003

Two Colored Women's Conversation About The Relevance Of Feminist Law Journals In The Twenty-First Century, Taunya Lovell Banks, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

This is a critique by two non-white law professors in the form of a conversation about the relevance offeminist law journals on their lives and scholarship. We conclude that the impression that feministscholarship now is accepted in mainstream law reviews may be illusory and thus there is a continuing need for feminist law journals. In the past rather than creating a new type of journal, feminist law journals tend to replicate the traditional law journal model. Only the focus is different. Twenty years later not only do race and sexuality continue to separate us, but increasingly, careerism as well. The …

Sitting On The Rail: The Westralian Worker's Response To Wartime Issues, Robert P. Corr Jan 2003

Sitting On The Rail: The Westralian Worker's Response To Wartime Issues, Robert P. Corr

Theses

The Westralian Worker occupies a privileged place in Western Australia's labour history, as the working class movement's official organ. This study seeks to understand how the paper dealt with its conflicting roles as reflector and projector of labour movement opinion - the observer-agent dichotomy. It does so by analysing the Worker's response to some of the major issues facing labour during World War I. The peace movement, anti-German attitudes, the persecution of the IWW, and the conscription debates are considered. It will be argued that the Worker attempted to accommodate a wide range of views, but as organised labour's divisions …

Nowe Zasady Wyboru Członków Zarządu W Spółkach Z Udziałem Skarbu Państwa, Robert Pietrusiński Jan 2003

Nowe Zasady Wyboru Członków Zarządu W Spółkach Z Udziałem Skarbu Państwa, Robert Pietrusiński

European Management Studies

Ostatnia zmiana przepisów ustawy o komercjalizacji i prywatyzacji zmieniła zasady powoływania członków zarządu w spółkach …

Standardy Corporate Governance - Europa A Polska, Artur Malinowski Jan 2003

Standardy Corporate Governance - Europa A Polska, Artur Malinowski

European Management Studies

Punktem wyjścia w rozważaniach nad standardami corporate governance są Zasady Nadzoru Korporacyjnego OECD będące podstawowym i powszechnie akceptowanym wyznacznikiem standardów ładu korporacyjnego. W artykule Zasady OECD stanowią dwa dalsze punkty odniesienia - do wybranych elementów europejskich kodyfikacji dobrych praktyk korporacyjnych i do polskiej konstrukcji Dobrych Praktyk w Spółkach Publicznych. Taka perspektywa pozwala poznać i ocenić specyfikę ładu korporacyjnego w wybranych krajach członkowskich OECD.

European Management Studies

Opracowanie przedstawia ustawowy model ładu korporacyjnego polskiej spółki publicznej w kontekście międzynarodowych i krajowych standardów (tzw. dobrych praktyk).

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally: Public Policy Issues Of The Georgia Hope Scholarship Program And The Lottery For Education, Ross Rubenstein Jan 2003

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally: Public Policy Issues Of The Georgia Hope Scholarship Program And The Lottery For Education, Ross Rubenstein

Center for Policy Research

The HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally_ scholarship program, which began in 1993, is one of the most popular public policies ever enacted in the state of Georgia. This lottery-funded program pays for tuition, fees, and books at any public college or university in the state for any Georgia student who graduates from high school with a B or better grade point average (GPA). To keep the scholarship, students must maintain the B or better GPA in college. The program's popularity has spread well beyond Georgia's borders; at least a dozen other states have instituted similar broad-based merit scholarship programs, and …

Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange Jan 2003

Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange

Center for Policy Research

This paper establishes the existence of a previously overlooked relationship between agglomeration and hours worked. Among non-professionals, hours worked decrease with the density of workers in the same occupation. Among professionals, a positive relationship is found. This relationship is twice as strong for the young as for the middle-aged. Moreover, young professional hours worked are shown to be especially sensitive to the presence of rivals. We show that these patterns are consistent with the selection of hard workers into cities and the high productivity of agglomerated labor. The behavior of young professionals is also consistent with the presence of keen …

Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao Jan 2003

Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

Popular and policy discussions have focused extensively on "entrepreneurship." While entrepreneurship is often viewed from the perspective of the individual's benefits--an increase in standard of living, flexibility in hours, and so forth--much of the policy interest derives from the presumption that entrepreneurs provide economy-wide benefits in the form of new products, lower prices, innovations, and increased productivity. How large are these effects? Using a rich panel of state-level data, we quantify the relationship between productivity growth--by state and by industry--and entrepreneurship. Specifically, we use state-of-the-art econometric techniques for panel data to determine whether variations in the birth rate and death …

On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner Jan 2003

On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner

Center for Policy Research

We examine the incidence, form, and research consequences of measurement error in measure of fatal injury risk in United States workplaces using both BLS and NIOSH data. We find evidence of substantial measurement errors in the fatality risk researchers attach to individual workers when estimating the implicit price of risk and the value of a statistical life. We first examine possible classical attenuation bias in the fatality risk coefficient. However, because we also find non-classical measurement error that differs across multiple risk measures and is not independent of other regressors, more complex statistical procedures than a standard instrumental variables estimator …

The Biomechanical Aspects Of Pedestrian Protection, Krishnakanth Aekbote, Peter Schuster, Sunny Kankanala, Srini Sundararajan, Stephen W. Rouhana Jan 2003

The Biomechanical Aspects Of Pedestrian Protection, Krishnakanth Aekbote, Peter Schuster, Sunny Kankanala, Srini Sundararajan, Stephen W. Rouhana

Mechanical Engineering

In this paper a biomechanical basis for pedestrian protection is presented based on reviews of epidemiological and biomechanical studies conducted over the last three decades. Epidemiological studies reveal the nature and cause of pedestrian crashes and injuries sustained in the field. The various factors that influence pedestrian crashes and fatalities such as pedestrian demographics, time and location of crash, type of vehicles involved and their design characteristics, impact speeds, and nature and severity of injuries sustained are covered in the epidemiology section. The biomechanical studies identify the injury mechanisms and the biomechanical tolerances. Several biomechanical studies that attempt to identify …
