Intangible Capital In The Pharmaceutical & Chemical Industry;, Katherine I. Gleason, Mark Klock Jan 2003

Intangible Capital In The Pharmaceutical & Chemical Industry;, Katherine I. Gleason, Mark Klock

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We investigate whether measures of intangible capital based on advertising and R&D can explain variation in Tobin's Q ratio for the pharmaceutical & chemical industry using data from 1982 to 2001. The study is motivated by prior literature studying this relation in other industries, recent literature investigating intangible capital in this industry, and the larger controversy about whether stock valuations have been high due to irrational investors or large investment in intangible capital. We find that our measures of intangible capital are statistically significant determinants of Tobin's Q and explain twenty percent of the variation in our sample.

The City Network Paradigm: New Frontiers;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman Jan 2003

The City Network Paradigm: New Frontiers;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This chapter provides a survey of recent developments of positive as well as normative theories of city systems. Static theory of city system emphasizes the factors that result in the formation of cities through the interaction between two opposing forces: i) agglomeration economy; ii) agglomeration diseconomy. Furthermore, the theory examines the interaction between cities within the national economy through intercity trade and migration, which shape the internal population composition and industrial structure of cities within the system. New development of this theory has been influenced by industrial organization and economic growth together with the new urban economic paradigm. This chapter …

Reexamining The Maturity Effect Using Extensive Futures Data;, Elton Daal, Joseph Farhat, Peihwang P. Wei Jan 2003

Reexamining The Maturity Effect Using Extensive Futures Data;, Elton Daal, Joseph Farhat, Peihwang P. Wei

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In his seminal article, Samuelson (1965) proposes the maturity effect that volatility of futures prices should increase as futures contract approaches expiration. This study provides new evidence on the maturity effect by examining a more extensive set of futures contracts over longer period than previous studies: 8451 futures contracts drawn from 74 commodities and four International exchanges, (London, Sydney, Tokyo and Winnipeg Futures), in addition to the U.S. markets over the years from 1960 to 2000. Strong support is found for the maturity effect in agricultural and energy commodities, but not for financial futures. Moreover, negative covariance between spot price …

Skill Distribution And Income Disparity In A North-South Trade Model;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman Jan 2003

Skill Distribution And Income Disparity In A North-South Trade Model;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

What are the impacts of free trade agreement on the social welfare of different groups of labor force in a developed country? What is the impact of free trade on a developed country 19s income disparity? What is the effect of free trade on the skill distribution of a developed country? The objective of this paper is to address the above questions in a simple two-sector general-equilibrium North-South trade model in which both countries produce one final good and one high-tech intermediate input. Horizontally differentiated skilled workers produce the high-tech intermediate input. The final good is produced with the use …

January Reversal In The Us Weekend Effect;, Saner A. M. Al-Rjoub, M. Kabir Hassan, Oscar Varela Jan 2003

January Reversal In The Us Weekend Effect;, Saner A. M. Al-Rjoub, M. Kabir Hassan, Oscar Varela

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

Average returns for small firm size portfolios tend to decrease during the week in January, with Monday returns highest and Friday lowest. More striking are the results after controlling for Mondays and Fridays in the first and the last 3 weeks of January. Monday returns in this first week are significantly positive and inversely related to size. Monday returns are also significantly positive for the small firm size portfolio in the last 3 weeks of January. But returns on Friday are insignificantly different from zero after controlling for Fridays in the first week and the last three weeks of January. …

Tcm Decoding Using Neural Networks, Edit J. Kaminsky, Nikhil Deshpande

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a neural decoder for trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes. Decoding is performed with Radial Basis Function Networks and Multi-Layer Perceptrons. The neural decoder effectively implements an adaptive Viterbi algorithm for TCM which learns communication channel imperfections. The implementation and performance of the neural decoder for trellis encoded 16-QAM with amplitude imbalance are analyzed.

Absorption Spectroscopy Of Colored Dissolved Organic Carbon In Georgia (Usa) Rivers: The Impact Of Molecular Size Distribution, Yosef Z. Yacobi, James J. Alberts, Monika Takacs, Michelle Mcelvaine Jan 2003

Absorption Spectroscopy Of Colored Dissolved Organic Carbon In Georgia (Usa) Rivers: The Impact Of Molecular Size Distribution, Yosef Z. Yacobi, James J. Alberts, Monika Takacs, Michelle Mcelvaine

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was collected in six rivers that transect the coastal plain of Georgia in July 1999 and February 2000. DOC concentrations ranged from 4.9 to 40.7 g m-3 and from 7.1 to 40.5 g m-3, respectively. The absorption coefficient at 440 nm was highly correlated with DOC concentration, suggesting that the optical parameter may be utilized for rapid estimation of DOC in these waters. The isolated DOC was separated into fractions of operationally defined molecular size, using an ultrafiltration technique that yielded three fractions: <10 ("small"), 10-50 ("medium") and >50 ("large") kilodalton. The smallest fraction was the most abundant (>50%) in …

Dewey, Bruner, And "Seas Of Stories" In The High Stakes Testing Debate, Kristen Campbell Wilcox Jan 2003

Dewey, Bruner, And "Seas Of Stories" In The High Stakes Testing Debate, Kristen Campbell Wilcox

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

This paper proposes that many of the questions surrounding high stakes testing being debated today are important, yet fall short of moving teachers, parents, students, administrators and legislators to think deeply about how optimal teaching and learning can be achieved in a high stakes testing environment. Finally, the high stakes testing debate is viewed, to borrow a term from Bruner, as a "sea of stories" in which the stakeholders see the same things, but come away with remarkably differing stories of what is happening (1996, p. 147). The principles of learning espoused by Dewey and Bruner put these "seas of …

A Performer's Guide To Multimedia Compositions For Clarinet And Visuals: A Tutorial Focusing On Works By Joel Chabade, Merrill Ellis, William O. Smith, And Reynold Weidenaar., Mary Alice Druhan

LSU Major Papers

The clarinetist of today is challenged by advancements in contemporary music and technology. In addition to the difficulties with contemporary clarinet techniques and with the onset of electronic music, multimedia compositions from the last forty years have presented an additional obstacle: the visual element. This written document provides a concise historical perspective of multimedia compositions utilizing clarinet and a tutorial focusing on the preparation of four multimedia works. A catalog of multimedia compositions for clarinet with visuals is included to provide information about literature and availability. This document contains an historical essay, summarizing developments in technology and changes in music …

The Use Of The Cornet In The Operettas Of Gilbert And Sullivan, John Christopher Schuesselin Jan 2003

The Use Of The Cornet In The Operettas Of Gilbert And Sullivan, John Christopher Schuesselin

LSU Major Papers

In this project the cornet parts in the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan are examined. First the cornet parts of Gilbert and Sullivan are compared to another composer of operetta, Jacques Offenbach, as well as a composer of opera, Giacomo Puccini. Next, the most important passages for cornet from the works of Gilbert and Sullivan are selected. They are grouped into three main categories: fanfare passages, section passages, and soloistic passages. Following each example are comments regarding context (what is taking place on stage and text) as well as performance suggestions (details concerning balance, phrasing, and orchestration). Appendix A contains …

Breaking The Silicon Ceiling: Women In Engineering Freshmen Seminar, Aura Ganz, Susannah Howe, Vanessa Rivera, Yuechun Chu

Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper we describe a pilot study for freshmen women engineering students we launched at the College of Engineering at UMass Amherst in the fall of 2002. This pilot study, which targeted increased retention of women in engineering, was comprised of the following three main elements: a weekly seminar, use of Pocket PCs and a web-based information and exchange center. The students' feedback to our seminar was very positive. The students noted that the seminar allayed their fears and concerns about pursuing engineering, provided a (classroom and online) forum for networking with their peers and other women engineers. This …

Decoherence In Two Coupled Qubits, Kristian Rabenstein, Dmitri V. Averin Jan 2003

Decoherence In Two Coupled Qubits, Kristian Rabenstein, Dmitri V. Averin

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have developed quantitative description of quantum coherent oscillations in the system of two coupled qubits in the presence of weak decoherence that in general can be correlated between the two qubits. It is shown that in the experimentally realized scheme of excitation of the oscillations, their waveform is not very sensitive to the magnitude of decoherence correlations. Modification of this scheme into potentially useful probe of the degree of decoherence correlations at the two qubits is suggested.
