Issues In The Control Of Halfspace Systems, Ramprasad Potluri Jan 2003

Issues In The Control Of Halfspace Systems, Ramprasad Potluri

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

By the name HALFSPACE SYSTEMS, this dissertation refers to systems whose dynamics are modeled by linear constraints of the form Exk+1 <= Fxk + Buk (where E, F 2 andlt;mn, B 2 andlt;mp). This dissertation explores the concepts of BOUNDEDNESS, STABILITY, IRREDUNDANCY, and MAINTAINABILITY (which is the same as REACHABILITY OF A TARGET TUBE) that are related to the control of halfspace systems. Given that a halfspace system is bounded, and that a given static target tube is reachable for this system, this dissertation presents algorithms to MAINTAIN the system in this target tube. A DIFFERENCE INCLUSION has the form xk+1 = Axk + Buuk, where xk, xk+1 2 andlt;n, uk 2 andlt;p, A 2 andlt;nn, Bu 2 andlt;np, Ai 2 andlt;nn, Bj 2 andlt;np, and A and Bu belong to the convex hulls of (A1,A2, . . . ,Aq) and (B1, B2, . . . , Br) respectively. This dissertation investigates the possibility that halfspace systems have equivalent difference inclusion representation for the case of uk = 0. An affirmitive result in this direction may make it possible to apply to halfspace systems the control theory that exists for difference inclusions.

Peer-Led Team Learning In Introductory Biology And Chemistry Courses: A Parallel Approach, A. Tenney, B. Houck

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Peer-Led Team Learning has been in use in Introductory Biology and Introductory Chemistry since Fall 1999 at the University of Portland. lts effect on improved conceptual understanding, retention of students, and improvement in study skills will be discussed. An ancillary, but no less important benefit in the development of interest in science teaching among the peer leaders, is also addressed.

Persistence In Mathematics By Underrepresented Students: Experiences Of A Math Excel Program, C. M. Hake, M. L. Crow, T. Dick

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Success in mathematics by underrepresented and nontraditional college students is measured not only by academic performance (grades), but also by the continued participation and persistence of these students in mathematics coursework. The Math Excel program at Oregon State University attempts to build "learning communities" with a sharp academic focus in support of students concurrently taking introductory level mathematics courses. The Math Excel program is based heavily on Uri Treisman's Emerging Scholars Workshop model of collaborative problem solving. In this article, we examine the experience of minority students in the Educational Opportunities Program participating in the Math Excel program. While the …

Mathematics From China To Virginia By Way Of Singapore, H. Kim, C. Wu, A. Xue, J. Boyd

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Our article follows from an interesting concurrence of mathematical and educational lines. At least the concurrence seems so to us and we hope that those who read on will agree. The lines or streams are a joint minimester program at St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher‘s Schools, an interest in problem solving, and a Singapore connection. We shall describe the lines first and then describe the mathematics that we found at their intersection.

Psychological And Sleep Quality Differences Between Chronic Daily Headache And Temporomandibular Disorders Patients, Eduardo B. Vazquez Jan 2003

Psychological And Sleep Quality Differences Between Chronic Daily Headache And Temporomandibular Disorders Patients, Eduardo B. Vazquez

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The aim of this study was to investigate whether chronic daily headache (CDH) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients present with different psychological and sleep quality characteristics. Sixty seven patients diagnosed with CDH according to Silberstein et al.s classification criteria were matched by age, sex, pain intensity, and pain duration with 67 patients who had a primary diagnosis of myofascial pain (MP), and 67 patients with a primary diagnosis of TMJ intracapsular pain (IC) according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. The CDH group was comprised of three mutually exclusive diagnostic groups, that is transformed migraine (n=35), chronic tension-type headache …

A Single-Phase Dual-Output Ac-Dc Converter With High Quality Input Waveforms, Qiang Li Jan 2003

A Single-Phase Dual-Output Ac-Dc Converter With High Quality Input Waveforms, Qiang Li

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

A single-phase, buck-boost based, dual-output AC-DC converter is studied in this thesis. The converter has two DC outputs with opposite polarities, which share the same ground with the input power line. The power stage performance, including the input filter, is studied and procedure to select power components is given. The circuit model is analyzed to develop appropriate control. Zerocrossing distortion of the source input current is addressed and a solution is proposed. Experimental results are satisfactory in that a high power factor line current results for steady-state operation.

Analysis Of Electron Transport And Luminance Mechanisms In Srs Based Blue Emitting Actfel Devices, Praveen Sivakumar Jan 2003

Analysis Of Electron Transport And Luminance Mechanisms In Srs Based Blue Emitting Actfel Devices, Praveen Sivakumar

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of SrS based ACTFEL devices. Better understanding of the processes in the host phosphor will give us the possibility to design more efficient blue emitting ACTFEL devices. Towards this aim, a physical model, that describes the optoelectronic processes taking place in the phosphor, was developed and analytical equations were written. The analytical model was numerically simulated and the plots of flux flowing through the device and luminance output by the device were obtained. Experiments were performed to obtain the plots of current flowing through the device and luminance output …

Sibling Recurrence Risk Ratio Analysis Of The Metabolic Syndrome And Its Components Over Time., Wei J. Chen, Pi Hua Liu, Yen Yi Ho, Kuo Liong Chien, Min Tzu Lo, Wei Liang Shih, Yu Chun Yen, Wen Chung Lee

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to estimate both cross-sectional sibling recurrence risk ratio (lambdas) and lifetime lambdas for the metabolic syndrome and its individual components over time among sibships in the prospectively followed-up cohorts provided by the Genetic Analysis Workshop 13. Five measures included in the operational criteria of the metabolic syndrome by the Adult Treatment Panel III were examined. A method for estimating sibling recurrence risk with correction for complete ascertainment was used to estimate the numerator, and the prevalence in the whole cohort was used as the denominator of lambdas. Considerable variability in the lambdas was found …
