Explaining Speculative Expansions;, Wei Xiao Jan 2003

Explaining Speculative Expansions;, Wei Xiao

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In this paper we use a modified neoclassical business cycle model to test two competing explanations of the expansion of the 1990s. The model can have indeterminate, multiple equilibria that give rise to expectation-driven business cycles. We fit into the model series of estimated speculative and productivity shocks and compare its predictions with empirical data. Our results suggest that the speculation hypothesis has more explanatory power than the productivity hypothesis in terms of matching the data. Speculative behavior of investors, therefore, may have contributed to the investment boom, the prolonged expansion, and the subsequent recession of the period 1991-2001.

Theories Of System Of Cities;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman, Alex Anas Jan 2003

Theories Of System Of Cities;, Hesham M. Abdel-Rahman, Alex Anas

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

Economic theories of systems of cities explain why production and consumption activities are concentrated in a number of urban areas of different sizes and industrial composition rather than uniformly distributed in space. These theories have been successively influenced by four paradigms: i) conventional urban economics emphasizing the tension between economies due to the spatial concentration of activity and diseconomies arising from that concentration; ii) the theory of industrial organization as it relates to inter-industry linkages and to product differentiation; iii) the New Economic Geography which ignores land markets but emphasizes trade among cities, fixed agricultural hinterlands and the endogenous emergence …

Instability Of Sunspot Equilibria In Real Business Cycles Under Adaptive Learning;, John Duffy, Wei Xiao Jan 2003

Instability Of Sunspot Equilibria In Real Business Cycles Under Adaptive Learning;, John Duffy, Wei Xiao

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We examine the stability of equilibrium in sunspot-driven real business cycle (RBC) models under adaptive learning. We show that the general reduced form of this class of models can admit rational expectations equilibria that are both indeterminate and stable under adaptive learning. Indeterminacy of equilibrium allows for the possibility that non-fundamental 1csunspot 1d variable realizations can serve as the main driving force of the model, and several researchers have put forward calibrated structural models where sunspot shocks play such a role. We show analytically how the structural restrictions that researchers have imposed on this type of model lead to reduced …

Insider Trading, Nasdaq Quotes, And Market Maker Competition;, Katherine I. Gleason Jan 2003

Insider Trading, Nasdaq Quotes, And Market Maker Competition;, Katherine I. Gleason

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This study provides evidence of a direct relationship between inside spreads and insider trading activity that is stronger when there are fewer market makers or more concentrated market maker market share. No evidence is found of a relationship between quote size at the inside and insider trading. The results are consistent with the Stoll (1978) hypothesis that inside quotes will be more responsive to informed trading risk under less competitive market making conditions. However, the results do not indicate that quote size is more responsive than spread to informed trading risk as predicted by DuPont (2000).

Heterogeneous Beliefs And Employee Stock Options;, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang Jan 2003

Heterogeneous Beliefs And Employee Stock Options;, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This paper uses a market valuation model to explore why firms grant employee stock options. When insider managers and outside investors have different opinions about the future prospects of the firm, employee stock options can be used to capture future investor overvaluation and to save employee compensation costs. Options can enhance the stock value for existing shareholders if the difference in opinion is highly volatile. The equilibrium option grant is positively correlated with both the perception error of investors, and the volatility of this error, as well as the correlation between investors 19 error and firm fundamental value. The model …

The Impact Of Grants, Tax Credit And Education Savings Account On Parental Contributions To College Expenses And The Educational Attainment Of Children, Michael D. Morris Jan 2003

The Impact Of Grants, Tax Credit And Education Savings Account On Parental Contributions To College Expenses And The Educational Attainment Of Children, Michael D. Morris

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This paper presents a multi-period, dynamic programming model of household choices on savings, consumption, having children and helping to fund children's education. Data from the National Longitudinal Survey young women cohort are used to estimate the parameters of the model. The full structural model is estimated using a simulated maximum likelihood procedure utilizing the dynamic programming model solution to create simulated data samples from which nonparametric kernel estimators are used to construct the densities in the likelihood. The estimated model is able to match the general trends in the NLS data, particularly as related to the interaction between children, savings …

Diversification Benefit Of Japanese Real Estate Over The Last Four Decades, Neal Maroney, Atsuyuki Naka Jan 2003

Diversification Benefit Of Japanese Real Estate Over The Last Four Decades, Neal Maroney, Atsuyuki Naka

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

This paper examines the benefits of diversifying into real estate and other assets that typify the wealth held by Japanese investors by examining movements in mean variance frontiers. We employ spanning tests to assess statistical significance of frontier shifts without specifying a benchmark asset pricing model. We also examine the impact of shifts in mean variance frontiers before and after the precipitous decline in Japanese real estate and stock market values in the 90s. Spanning tests show that real estate, short, and long-term bonds provide diversification benefits while domestic and US equities do not. Significant shifts in mean variance frontiers …

Is Overreaction An Explanation For The Value Effect? A Study Using Implied Volatility From Option Prices;, Wei He, Peihwang P. Wei Jan 2003

Is Overreaction An Explanation For The Value Effect? A Study Using Implied Volatility From Option Prices;, Wei He, Peihwang P. Wei

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

Many empirical studies document the value effect. One explanation is that investors overreact to growth aspects for growth stocks. We apply Stein's (1989) method to investigate whether the degree of overreaction differs between value and growth stocks using the implied volatility from option prices. A finding of overreaction for either value stocks or growth stocks would lend support to overreaction as an explanation for the value effect. Empirical results here indicate a stronger degree of overreaction for growth stocks.
