Understanding Price-Based Antidilution Protection: Five Principles To Apply When Negotiating A Down-Round Financing, Robert P. Bartlett Nov 2003

Understanding Price-Based Antidilution Protection: Five Principles To Apply When Negotiating A Down-Round Financing, Robert P. Bartlett

Scholarly Works

As most venture capital investors are aware, the economic downturn of the past two years—and the concomitant decrease in private company valuations—has created an opportunity for significant returns on new venture investments seldom seen since the early 1990s. Yet while the investment opportunities of the current economic environment may have attractive financial valuations, they frequently come with the added cost of significant transactional complexity. In particular, the issuance of securities by a private company at a price that is below the price previously paid by the company's investors (typically referred to as a “down-round” financing) may trigger one or more …

Larger Issues At Stake In Unnatural Sex Debate, Seow Hon Tan Nov 2003

Larger Issues At Stake In Unnatural Sex Debate, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The recent debate about the criminal prohibition of oral sex provides an occasion for considering larger, related issues. However prevalent the practice of oral sex and however archaic Section 377 of the Penal Code seems to those pushing for its repeal, the arguments offered have tended to take a piecemeal approach and display an ignorance of or disregard for the larger interests at stake.

Midazolam And Thiopentone Co-Induction: Looking For Improvement In Quality Of Anaesthesia, M A. Khan, F A. Khan Nov 2003

Midazolam And Thiopentone Co-Induction: Looking For Improvement In Quality Of Anaesthesia, M A. Khan, F A. Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Objective: To evaluate improvement in quality of anaesthesia induction using thiopentone and midazolam for co-induction of anaesthesia. An additional end point was taken as loss of response to a tetanic stimulation (50 Hz) delivered for 5 seconds after the loss of verbal contact and eyelash reflex. Methods: Ninety ASA I and II patients, within the age range of 20-60 years were studied. Patients were randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and group C.Results: Onset of induction and loss of response to a tetanic stimulation was achieved earlier in group B as compared to the other study groups (p < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Co-induction with midazolam 0.02 mg x kg(-1) followed by thiopentone 3 mg x kg(-1) was superior to other two groups. Induction of anaesthesia in this group was found to be smoother and faster, provided better hemodynamic stability, better airway maintenance and with lesser incidence of untoward effects.

“Vacation” At Sea: Judicial Remedies And Equitable Discretion In Administrative Law, Ronald M. Levin Nov 2003

“Vacation” At Sea: Judicial Remedies And Equitable Discretion In Administrative Law, Ronald M. Levin

Duke Law Journal

Scholars have rarely examined the remedial issues that federal courts may face when they find that an administrative agency has acted unlawfully. This Article presents a broad survey of that topic in the course of exploring a narrower doctrinal issue: the validity of "remand without vacation." That term denotes a practice whereby a court remands an agency action for further work but allows the action to remain in place during the remand proceedings. In recent years many appellate panels have resorted to this practice in order to minimize disruption of an ongoing administrative program or to protect private reliance interests. …

A Survey On Physical Delivery Versus Cash Settlement In Futures Contracts, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse Nov 2003

A Survey On Physical Delivery Versus Cash Settlement In Futures Contracts, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

A futures contract may adopt physical delivery or cash settlement to liquidate open positions after the maturity day. While traditionally physical delivery specification is favored, exchanges have recently turned to examine cash settlement possibilities. This paper summarizes current literature on settlement specifications with emphases on market manipulation, cash index construction, and hedging effectiveness comparisons

Tests Of Functional Form And Heteroscedasticity, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse Nov 2003

Tests Of Functional Form And Heteroscedasticity, Zhenlin Yang, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper considers tests of misspecification in a heteroscedastic transformation model. We derive Lagrange multiplier (LM) statistics for (i) testing functional form and heteroscedasticity jointly, (ii) testing functional form in the presence of heteroscedasticity, and (iii) testing heteroscedasticity in the presence of data transformation. We present LM statistics based on the expected information matrix. For cases (i) and (ii), this is done assuming the Box-Cox transformation. For case (iii), the test does not depend on whether the functional form is estimated or pre-specified. Small-sample properties of the tests are assessed by Monte Carlo simulation, and comparisons are made with the …

Manpower Allocation With Time Windows And Job Teaming Constraints, Xi Li, Yan Zhi Li, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues Nov 2003

Manpower Allocation With Time Windows And Job Teaming Constraints, Xi Li, Yan Zhi Li, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the Manpower Allocation Problem with Time Windows and Job-Teaming Constraints (MAPTWTC), we have a set of jobs located at various locations where each job requires a team of workers. Each job has a time window and a job duration, during which everyone on the team has to be present. The job requirement is satisfied if and only if the required composite team works for long enough duration within the job's time window. The objective of the problem is find a schedule to minimize a weighted sum of the total number of workers, the total travelling distances of all workers …

There is an old adage of “work smarter, not harder.” An e ective leader/manager has to be able to motivate others to be involved. All too often, we attempt to do it all ourselves, thinking we can do it more quickly than taking time to explain to another person.

An Automated Procedure For Simulating Complex Arrival Processes: A Web-Based Approach, Sachin Sumant Nov 2003

An Automated Procedure For Simulating Complex Arrival Processes: A Web-Based Approach, Sachin Sumant

Theses

In industry, simulation is one of the most widely used probabilistic modeling tools for modeling highly complex systems. Major sources of complexity include the inputs that drive the logic of the model. Effective simulation input modeling requires the use of accurate and efficient input modeling procedures. This research focuses on nonstationary arrival processes. The fundamental stochastic model on which this study is conducted is the nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) which has successfully been used to characterize arrival processes where the arrival rate changes over time. Although a number of methods exist for modeling the rate and mean value functions that …

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger Nov 2003

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger

Theses

This thesis discusses photographs exhibited at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology from April 28 - May 10, 2003. In these photographs of desecrated landscapes at liminal times of day, the eerie light and vibrant colors of dusk and dawn enable me to create views of my personal world, a foreign and perilous place for some audiences, an intoxicating and disquieting environment for others. As the light gives way to darkness, the deepening shadows of the vegetation come alive as monstrous figures. Fears lurk in the darkness and become threatening creatures of the …

Pricing And Qos Of Information Services In A Competitive Market, Zhen Liu, Laura Wynter, Cathy Xia Nov 2003

Pricing And Qos Of Information Services In A Competitive Market, Zhen Liu, Laura Wynter, Cathy Xia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Design of e-commerce services that are competitive in a quickly responding market requires the analyses of prices and price structures. We develop a general model of an e-commerce market that allows us to analyze optimal price structures, both flat and usage-based. Based on the price structure of a major web hosting provider, we consider single-tier and two-tier (burst-rate) pricing, and our result suggests that the more complex two-tier structure may not be worth the marketing effort, as the firm's equilibrium profits will not increase through the use of this structure. An essential feature of our approach is that we model …

Web Unit Mining: Finding And Classifying Subgraphs Of Web Pages, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2003

Web Unit Mining: Finding And Classifying Subgraphs Of Web Pages, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In web classification, most researchers assume that the objects to classify are individual web pages from one or more web sites. In practice, the assumption is too restrictive since a web page itself may not always correspond to a concept instance of some semantic concept (or category) given to the classification task. In this paper, we want to relax this assumption and allow a concept instance to be represented by a subgraph of web pages or a set of web pages. We identify several new issues to be addressed when the assumption is removed, and formulate the web unit mining …

Task Allocation Via Multi-Agent Coalition Formation: Taxonomy, Algorithms And Complexity, Hoong Chuin Lau, L. Zhang Nov 2003

Task Allocation Via Multi-Agent Coalition Formation: Taxonomy, Algorithms And Complexity, Hoong Chuin Lau, L. Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coalition formation has become a key topic in multiagent research. In this paper, we propose a preliminary classification for the coalition formation problem based on three driving factors (demands, resources and profit objectives). We divide our analysis into 5 cases. For each case, we present algorithms and complexity results. We anticipate that with future research, this classification can be extended in similar fashion to the comprehensive classification for the job scheduling problem.

A Robust Dissolve Detector By Support Vector Machine, Chong-Wah Ngo Nov 2003

A Robust Dissolve Detector By Support Vector Machine, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the robust detection and classification of dissolve sequences in videos. Our approach is based on the multi-resolution representation of temporal slices extracted from 3D image volume. At the low-resolution (LR) scale, the problem of dissolve detection is reduced as cut transition detection. At the highresolution (HR) space, Gabor wavelet features are computed for regions that surround the cuts located at LR scale. The computed features are then input to support vector machines for pattern classification. Encouraging results have been obtained through experiments.

Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger Nov 2003

Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger

Journal of International Women's Studies

Cyber-space presents many contradictions to those seeking to use it for activist ends in a transnational world. This paper explores some of these contradictions by examining various uses of the internet in efforts to raise awareness about the situation for women in Afghanistan during the period the Taliban came to power and controlled a majority of the country. I explore differences in approaches, images, and tone within examples of internet activism, emphasizing the Web work of the Feminist Majority Foundation, set in comparison with that of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. Due to the prominence of the …

Psychological Factors Influencing Perceived Entrepreneurial Success Among Nigerian Women In Small-Scale Businesses, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Ugonma Eme Umoren Nov 2003

Psychological Factors Influencing Perceived Entrepreneurial Success Among Nigerian Women In Small-Scale Businesses, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Ugonma Eme Umoren

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper considered self-concept, perceived managerial competence, work stress and business commitment as important psychological variables for perceived entrepreneurial success among female entrepreneurs. A study was conducted to examine these factors, using 213 female entrepreneurs. The results showed that although all the predictor variables jointly accounted for perceived entrepreneurial success only business commitment contributed significantly. But in the independent prediction of the variables, only self-concept and business commitment were significant. Additionally, number of children significantly influenced perceived success with females having 5 children and more, and those having 1-2 children reporting better success than those without children or having 3-4 …

Women Learners In The Classroom: Exploring The Experience Of Voice, Listening, And Silence, Anita Sinner Nov 2003

Women Learners In The Classroom: Exploring The Experience Of Voice, Listening, And Silence, Anita Sinner

Journal of International Women's Studies

The question of voice is central to a feminist perspective. The dichotomies of voice and silence have long held positions of power and marginalization in the context of the classroom community. In a recent investigation into the learning experiences of three women, Giustina, Tina and Christina, the theme of voice, listening, and silence surfaced as participants reflected on their participation in college and university courses in Canada. These case studies offer a forum to discuss the classroom experiences of women and perhaps shift perspectives on the meaning of voice, listening, and silence in learning.

In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain Nov 2003

In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain

Journal of International Women's Studies

The problem of inequality for women in Bangladesh is more social than legal. As regards to the law, except for personal matters, inequalities in the provisions of law are hardly found. Personal matters, however, are regulated by religious laws or customs. In the legal system of Bangladesh though these laws or customs are incorporated separately under the head of Personal Law, these are not, however, as a whole derived from religious laws or customs. Some changes through introducing enactments or promulgating ordinances were made in their application. Still, these have been insufficient to establish equality between women and men. This …
