Is There A Need To Involve Doctors In Management Of Health Care In Saudi Arabia, Ali M. Al-Shehri

Saudi Medical Journal

Recently, the role of doctors and managers in health care management has become a hot topic in the newspapers and public magazine in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The aim of this paper is to contribute constructively and scientifically to this topical issue by emphasizing that commonality and interaction between medicine and management dictate more involvement of doctors in management. Although one may argue that doctors are usually not well trained in resources management, scientific evidence supports the need for more involvement of doctors in managing health care system. In addition, government needs to make a strategic shift towards high …

A New Era For Preventive Genetic Programs In The Arabian Peninsula, Ali N. Al-Odaib, Khaled K. Abu-Amero, Pinar T. Ozand, Ali M. Al-Hellani

Saudi Medical Journal

In the Arabian Peninsula, high percentages of consanguineous marriages and the tribal nature of marriages have resulted in high incidence of genetically based disorders. The successful management of these disorders incurs a high financial cost, which is a great burden on the health care system. The practical solution to this problem is through prevention. Prevention of genetic disorders should be the utmost public health concern especially where these disorders are prevalent. Preventive genetics became possible with the advent of biochemical and molecular technologies. Biochemical neonatal screening based on tandem mass spectrometry technology and molecular technologies such as sequencing, DNA microarray …

Frustrated Fertility: Infertility And Psychological Distress Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil, Lynn K. White, Mary Casey Jacob Nov 2003

Frustrated Fertility: Infertility And Psychological Distress Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil, Lynn K. White, Mary Casey Jacob

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Using a random sample of 580 Midwestern women, we test the hypothesis that women who have experienced infertility report higher psychological distress. Approximately one third of our sample reports having experienced infertility sometime in their lives, although the majority of the infertile now have biological children. Drawing hypotheses from identity and stress theories, we examine whether roles or resources condition the effects of infertility or whether its effects are limited to childless women. Infertility combined with involuntary childlessness (including biological and social) is associated with significantly greater distress. For women in this category, the risk of distress is substantial.

Fum9 Is Required For C-5 Hydroxylation Of Fumonisins And Complements The Meitotically Defined Fum3 Locus In Gibberella Moniliformis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor Nov 2003

Fum9 Is Required For C-5 Hydroxylation Of Fumonisins And Complements The Meitotically Defined Fum3 Locus In Gibberella Moniliformis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Deletion of the Gibberella moniliformis FUM9 gene resulted in mutants that produce only fumonisins that lack a C-5 hydroxyl group. This phenotype is identical to that of previously described mutants with defective alleles at the meiotically defined Fum3 locus. Transformation with a wild-type FUM9 gene into a Fum3- defective mutant restored wild-type fumonisin production. These results indicate that the FUM9 protein catalyzes the C-5 hydroxylation of fumonisins and that FUM9 and the Fum3 locus are the same gene.

Comparative Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157 And Intimin-Negative Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli Strains In Neonatal Pigs, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien Nov 2003

Comparative Pathogenicity Of Escherichia Coli O157 And Intimin-Negative Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli Strains In Neonatal Pigs, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We compared the pathogenicity of intimin-negative non-O157:H7 Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O91:H21 and O104:H21 strains with the pathogenicity of intimin-positive O157:H7 and O157:H- strains in neonatal pigs. We also examined the role of Stx2d-activatable genes and the large hemolysinencoding plasmid of O91:H21 strain B2F1 in the pathogenesis of STEC disease in pigs. We found that all E. coli strains that made wild-type levels of Stx caused systemic illness and histological lesions in the brain and intestinal crypts, whereas none of the control Stx-negative E. coli strains evoked comparable central nervous system signs or intestinal lesions. By contrast, …

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott Nov 2003

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

n this paper, I argue that one of the most intense ways women are encouraged to enjoy sublime experiences is via attempts to control their bodies through excessive dieting. If this is so, then the societal-cultural contributions to the problem of eating disorders exceed the perpetuation of a certain beauty ideal to include the almost universal encouragement women receive to diet, coupled with the relative shortage of opportunities women are afforded to experience the sublime.

Neutron Radiography Study Of Water Transport In An Operating Fuel Cell: Effects Of Diffusion Media And Cathode Channel Properties, Jon Owejan Nov 2003

Neutron Radiography Study Of Water Transport In An Operating Fuel Cell: Effects Of Diffusion Media And Cathode Channel Properties, Jon Owejan

Theses

In a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, effective water management is required for optimal cell performance. While membrane hydration is needed for effective proton conduction, an excess of water, particularly on the cathode side, hinders transport of oxygen to the catalyst sites and lowers cell voltage. This study utilized neutron radiography to reveal the presence of liquid water while operating the PEMFC. These insitu experiments investigated both rectangular and triangular flow field geometries, various flow field surface energies, and several gas diffusion media samples. Correlations were drawn between accumulated water mass and performance data collected during the imaging process. The …

Tendencies Versus Boundaries: Levels Of Generality In Behavioral Law And Economics, Gregory Mitchell Nov 2003

Tendencies Versus Boundaries: Levels Of Generality In Behavioral Law And Economics, Gregory Mitchell

Vanderbilt Law Review

When evidence on the truth or falsity of a proposition is ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations, psychologists warn about "biased assimilation" of the evidence to support pre-existing theories, beliefs, and attitudes. Therefore, when a skeptic about the public policy implications of psychological research examines the complex mix of evidence on human rationality, he may find much to support his skepticism about the use of psychology to reform the law. Likewise, an optimist about the public policy contributions of psychology may find within this same body of evidence much to bolster his optimistic view that psychological research can be used …

Chicago Man, K-T Man, And The Future Of Behavioral Law And Economics, Robert A. Prentice Nov 2003

Chicago Man, K-T Man, And The Future Of Behavioral Law And Economics, Robert A. Prentice

Vanderbilt Law Review

Most law is aimed at shaping human behavior, encouraging that which is good for society and discouraging that which is bad.' Nonetheless, for most of the history of our legal system, laws were passed, cases were decided, and academics pontificated about the law based on nothing more than common sense assumptions about how people make decisions. A quarter century or more ago, the law and economics movement replaced these common sense assumptions with a well-considered and expressly stated assumption-that man is a rational maximizer of his expected utilities. Based on this premise, law and economics has dominated interdisciplinary thought in …

War And American Constitutional Order, Mark E. Brandon Nov 2003

War And American Constitutional Order, Mark E. Brandon

Vanderbilt Law Review

In their introduction to a fine new edition of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop claim that "[i]f the twentieth century has been an American century, it is because the work of America... has been to keep democracy strong where it is alive and to promote it where it is weak or nonexistent." By "democracy" they doubtless intend something akin to "constitutional democracy," "liberal democracy," or "republican government." I take each of these to be a rough proxy for a constitutionalist system that includes (1) institutions authorized by and accountable to the people (both …

Unfit To Serve: Permanently Barring People From Serving As Officers And Directors Of Publicly Traded Companies After The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Philip F.S. Berg

Vanderbilt Law Review

On June 4, 2003, lifestyle guru Martha Stewart was indicted on multiple criminal and civil charges by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC or Commission). The charges, including obstruction of justice and civil insider trading, stemmed from Stewart's sale of ImClone stock shortly before the Food and Drug Administration rejected a drug produced by ImClone and sent the company's stock price tumbling. Although Stewart could face a number of serious penalties under her criminal indictment, the primary remedy sought by the SEC for her civil insider trading charges is rather uncommon-a bar from serving as a director of Martha Stewart …
