Consumer Expectations' Last Hope: A Response To Professor Kysar, James A. Henderson Jr., Aaron Twerski Nov 2003

Consumer Expectations' Last Hope: A Response To Professor Kysar, James A. Henderson Jr., Aaron Twerski

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The authors agree with Professor Kysar that the current version of the consumer expectations test for design defectiveness is an amorphous, unprincipled misreading of section 402A of the Restatement (Second) of Torts. And they agree that most courts apply risk-utility balancing in determining design defectiveness. But they disagree with Kysar's proposal to supplement risk-utility balancing with a reinvigorated consumer expectations test based on expert testimony regarding what consumers actually expect in the way of design safety. Judicial reliance on such testimony would be susceptible to result-oriented manipulation by litigants, would not guide manufacturers in making sensible design choices, would pressure …

Comparison Of Double Disc And Combined Disc Method For The Detection Of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases In Enterobacteriaceae, K Jabeen, A Zafar, Rumina Hasan Nov 2003

Comparison Of Double Disc And Combined Disc Method For The Detection Of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases In Enterobacteriaceae, K Jabeen, A Zafar, Rumina Hasan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective:
/="/">
To compare double disc approximation and combined disc method for their ability to detect extended spectrum b lactamase (ESBL) production in enterobacteriaceae and determine the percentage of isolates which are falsely reported as sensitive in absence of ESBL detection, in a clinical microbiology laboratory of a tertiary care hospital between September-October 2002.
/="/">Methods:
/="/">
Selected isolates were identified according to standard biochemical tests. Disc susceptibility tests were performed according to NCCLS. ESBL detection by combined disc [cefotaxime (30 ug) versus cefotaxime plus clavulanate (30+10 ug)] was compared with detection using double discs [amoxy-clavulanic acid (20+10 ug) and …

Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition: Do Academics Really Need To Know?, Anne Murphy Nov 2003

Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition: Do Academics Really Need To Know?, Anne Murphy

Journal Articles

The dominant approach to the study of learning throughout most of the twentieth century was to view learning as cognitive only, as if it were a process contained in the mind of the learner, decontextualised from the lived-in world

Synergetic Control For Dc-Dc Boost Converter: Implementation Options, Enrico Santi, Antonello Monti, Donghong Li, Karthik Proddutur, Roger A. Dougal Nov 2003

Synergetic Control For Dc-Dc Boost Converter: Implementation Options, Enrico Santi, Antonello Monti, Donghong Li, Karthik Proddutur, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

The theory of synergetic control was introduced in a power electronics context in a previous paper. In this paper, we review the theory, then focus on some practical aspects with reference to both simulations and actual hardware. In particular, we address management of the current limit condition and solve it with several different approaches. Adaptive and other control laws are also introduced to improve the control performance. The various controls are evaluated by applying the classical voltage reference step test and the step load test.

Middleware Infrastructure For Parallel And Distributed Programming Models In Heterogeneous Systems, Jameela Al-Jaroodi, Nader Mohamed, Hong Jiang, David Swanson Nov 2003

Middleware Infrastructure For Parallel And Distributed Programming Models In Heterogeneous Systems, Jameela Al-Jaroodi, Nader Mohamed, Hong Jiang, David Swanson

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we introduce a middleware infrastructure that provides software services for developing and deploying high-performance parallel programming models and distributed applications on clusters and networked heterogeneous systems. This middleware infrastructure utilizes distributed agents residing on the participating machines and communicating with one another to perform the required functions. An intensive study of the parallel programming models in Java has helped identify the common requirements for a runtime support environment, which we used to define the middleware functionality. A Java-based prototype, based on this architecture, has been developed along with a Java Object-Passing Interface (JOPI) class library. Since this …

Subpopulations Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Rev Coexist In Vivo And Differ In Phenotype, Prasith Baccam, Robert J. Thompson, Yuxing Li, Wendy O. Sparks, Michael Belshan, Karin S. Dorman, Yvonne Wannemuehler, J. Lindsay Oaks, James L. Cornette, Susan Carpenter

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Lentiviruses exist in vivo as a population of related, nonidentical genotypes, commonly referred to as quasispecies. The quasispecies structure is characteristic of complex adaptive systems and contributes to the high rate of evolution in lentiviruses that confounds efforts to develop effective vaccines and antiviral therapies. Here, we describe analyses of genetic data from longitudinal studies of genetic variation in a lentivirus regulatory protein, Rev, over the course of disease in ponies experimentally infected with equine infectious anemia virus. As observed with other lentivirus data, the Rev variants exhibited a quasispecies character. Phylogenetic and partition analyses suggested that the Rev quasispecies …

Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang Nov 2003

Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agriculture is a resource-intensive enterprise. The manner in which food production systems utilize resources has a large influence on environmental quality. To evaluate prospects for conserving natural resources while meeting increased demand for cereals, we interpret recent trends and future trajectories in crop yields, land and nitrogen fertilizer use, carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas emissions to identify key issues and challenges. Based on this assessment, we conclude that avoiding expansion of cultivation into natural ecosystems, increased nitrogen use efficiency, and improved soil quality are pivotal components of a sustainable agriculture that meets human needs and protects natural resources. To achieve …
