Effects Of Environmental Measures On Intelligence In Young Children: Growth Curve Modeling Of Longitudinal Data, K. A. Espy, Victoria J. Molfese, L. Dilalla Nov 2003

Effects Of Environmental Measures On Intelligence In Young Children: Growth Curve Modeling Of Longitudinal Data, K. A. Espy, Victoria J. Molfese, L. Dilalla

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Examined the effects of different environmental measures on individual intellectual growth patterns in 105 young children participating in a longitudinal study. Intelligence (Stanford-Binet, 4th edition) was measured at ages 3 through 6 yrs, and child's environment was assessed at age 3 years using SES data and scores on the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) Inventory. Growth curve analyses revealed that HOME scores exerted a constant influence on the expected composite, verbal, and nonverbal intellectual skills at each age. Only SES influenced the rate of growth, specifically nonverbal intellectual skills. The magnitudes of these effects were moderate, but …

Understanding And Confronting Species Uncertainty In Biology And Conservation, Jody Hey, Robin Waples, Michael L. Arnold, Roger K. Butlin, Richard G. Harrison Nov 2003

Understanding And Confronting Species Uncertainty In Biology And Conservation, Jody Hey, Robin Waples, Michael L. Arnold, Roger K. Butlin, Richard G. Harrison

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recent essays on the species problem have emphasized the commonality that many species concepts have with basic evolutionary theory. Although true, such consensus fails to address the nature of the ambiguity that is associated with species-related research. We argue that biologists who endure the species problem can benefit from a synthesis in which individual taxonomic species are used as hypotheses of evolutionary entities. We discuss two sources of species uncertainty: one that is a semantic confusion, and a second that is caused by the inherent uncertainty of evolutionary entities. The former can be dispelled with careful communication, whereas the latter …

Semantic E-Workflow Composition, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth Nov 2003

Semantic E-Workflow Composition, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Systems and infrastructures are currently being developed to support Web services. The main idea is to encapsulate an organization's functionality within an appropriate interface and advertise it as Web services. While in some cases Web services may be utilized in an isolated form, it is normal to expect Web services to be integrated as part of workflow processes. The composition of workflow processes that model e-service applications differs from the design of traditional workflows, in terms of the number of tasks (Web services) available to the composition process, in their heterogeneity, and in their autonomy. Therefore, two problems need to …

Some Free - Some Fee: The Emerging Business Model For E-Content Web Sites, Meg C. Murray, Ravi Narayanaswamy Nov 2003

Some Free - Some Fee: The Emerging Business Model For E-Content Web Sites, Meg C. Murray, Ravi Narayanaswamy

Faculty Articles

The rapid emergence of E-commerce with its competitive characteristics has transformed the business landscape. In its short lifespan of little more than a decade, the Internet marketplace has already seen a dramatic cycle of high peaks and low valleys. E-content sites, whose primary product is information, have had the most difficulty sustaining profitability. The central proposition is that a firm’s business model is an important locus of innovation and a crucial source of revenue creation for its stakeholders. Consequently, the question has become how can an Internet business and e-content Web site, in particular, support a sustainable business model. There …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Twin Interfacial Edge Cracks Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Piezoelectric Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Tian-You Fan Nov 2003

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Twin Interfacial Edge Cracks Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Piezoelectric Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Tian-You Fan

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the electroelastic potentials and the fracture parameters of a twin-edge-cracked piezoelectric bimaterial strip with a screw dislocation. By means of conformal mapping technique and the known dislocation solution, the antiplane displacement and inplane electric potentials are obtained in closed-form. The intensity factors and the energy release rate are extracted explicitly. In some limiting cases, the present solutions cover those in the literature.

A Macrokinetic Study Of The High-Temperature Solid-Phase Titanium-Carbon Reaction, Julia Y. Kostagorva, Hendrik J. Viljoen, Alexander S. Shteinberg Nov 2003

A Macrokinetic Study Of The High-Temperature Solid-Phase Titanium-Carbon Reaction, Julia Y. Kostagorva, Hendrik J. Viljoen, Alexander S. Shteinberg

Papers in Reaction Kinetics

An experimental method, electro thermal explosion (ETE), is used to measure the macro kinetic parameters of the high-temperature titanium/carbon reaction. Different stages of the reaction have been identified, but the focus of this study is on the reaction between solid titanium and solid carbon, i.e., prior to the melting of titanium. The reaction has high activation energy, and an electric current is used to heat the cylindrically shaped sample to a specified temperature. The current is shut off at a temperature below the melting point of titanium; any further temperature rise is only due to reaction. The output of the …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins Nov 2003

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Reports

The nutritional value of the kernel meals of three species of lupin (Lupinus albus, L. angustifolius and L. luteus) was compared against each other and a reference ingredient of solvent extracted soybean meal, when fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Each lupin kernel meal was included in test diets at 300 g/kg and also at a greater level, representing 50% of the total protein content in the diet. The digestibility of protein of all lupin kernel meals was better than for the soybean meal. The highest protein digestibility was that from L. luteus kernel meal at 30% inclusion (100%), which …

Societal Stability And Political Reform : Chinese Politics In The 1990s, Yiu Chung Wong Nov 2003

Societal Stability And Political Reform : Chinese Politics In The 1990s, Yiu Chung Wong

CAPS Working Paper Series

On 28 September 1995, Jiang Zemin delivered one of the most important speeches in his tenure as the General Secretary of the CCP in the Fifth Plenum of 14th CCP Congress, which is entitled “To Handle Correctly Certain Relationships in the Process of Socialist Modernization Construction”. On the top of the agenda was the relationships between reform, development and stability. To him, reform, in particular economic reform, must be pursued; development is the enhancing of national strength and stability is the pre-condition of development. Indeed, it is the equilibrium of these three sets of relationships that the CCP leadership strove …

Minimality Of Solution Update In Conflict Resolution: An Application Of Revision Programming To Von Neumann-Morgenstern Approach, Inna Pivkina, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2003

Minimality Of Solution Update In Conflict Resolution: An Application Of Revision Programming To Von Neumann-Morgenstern Approach, Inna Pivkina, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In a 1944 book that started game theory (and mathematical approach to conflict resolution), von Neumann and Morgenstern proposed the notion of a solution. When the situation changes, the old solution is often no longer a solution, so it needs to be updated. In practical applications, it is usually desirable to keep the solution change "minimal" in some reasonable sense. We show that for a seemingly straightforward formalization of this minimality, checking whether a change is minimal is NP-hard. We also show that by representing the notion of a solution as a collection of revision rules, we can produce a …

The Epidemiology Of U.S. Immunization Law: A National Study For The National Immunizations Program, Centers For Disease Control And Prevention: Medicaid Coverage Of Immunizations For Non-Institutionalized Adults, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Alexandra M. Stewart, Marisa A. Cox, Alexis Lee

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

As a health policy matter, coverage of immunizations and their administration for all ages at levels recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has grown in importance for several reasons: 1) the growing attention to both manmade and naturally occurring public health threats; 2) recognition of the value of immunization to society; and 3) the relatively high cost of at least certain immunization services in relation to personal income. No population stands to benefit more from immunization coverage than low income persons.

Studies suggest that adult immunization status is particularly low, and that financial barriers play a role, …

Public Affairs Television And Third Party Roles: The Nightline Debates In South Africa (1985) And Israel (1988), Johannes Botes Nov 2003

Public Affairs Television And Third Party Roles: The Nightline Debates In South Africa (1985) And Israel (1988), Johannes Botes

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper examines the strategies, tactics and tasks of a media moderator during television debates regarding deep-rooted conflicts, as well as the overall intended and unintended roles and effects of these broadcasts. Two case studies—the Nightline (ABC-TV) broadcasts from South Africa (1985) and Israel (1988)—are examined by comparing the actions of a public affairs television moderator to conventional third party intervenors, as defined in conflict resolution literature. In the process the paper presents research regarding the manifest tactics and latent roles demonstrated by a television moderator and the manner in which these activities can be compared to the tasks of …

Joan Fitzpatrick: In Memoriam, Roland L. Hjorth Nov 2003

Joan Fitzpatrick: In Memoriam, Roland L. Hjorth

Washington Law Review

Joan Fitzpatrick graduated from Harvard Law School in 1975. Women were then beginning to enter the legal profession in increasing numbers, but role models were still important in encouraging women to become equal partners in our profession. Joan was an especially effective role model for our students. I think she realized that. It was one of the things that drove her to excel in everything she did. Joan told me—more than once in fact—that she earned every penny she made. It was a point of pride to her. She was a hard worker whose work yielded very important results. And …
