The Influence Of Music On Preferred Intensity And Associated Physiological Responses, David Nuckols Nov 2003

The Influence Of Music On Preferred Intensity And Associated Physiological Responses, David Nuckols

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Music is a part of everyday life and has an effect on people in many different ways. Music can be as individual as the person who listens to it, and thus there are many genres for many different tastes. Music has accompanied exercise and sport for quite some time. It has been shown to have varying psychophysical effects including decreasing ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) at a given sub-max intensity, enhancing arousal control, and affective states at high and medium intensities. Also the improved synchronization of sub-maximal exercise with music may result in increased work output. The proposed ability of …

The Role Of Artistic Processes In Peace-Building In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Craig Zelizer Nov 2003

The Role Of Artistic Processes In Peace-Building In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Craig Zelizer

Peace and Conflict Studies

Throughout the world, community arts-based processes have become an essential component of peacebuilding work in societies experiencing severe conflicts. Both during a conflict and in post-conflict peacebuilding efforts, community based arts processes can be an especially effective tool to bring together identity groups through sharing common cultural experiences, raising awareness about past suffering, and engaging communities in creative projects. In this research project, the author spent fourteen months in Bosnia-Herzegovina researching the use of community arts-based peacebuilding efforts both during the war and in the post-conflict stage. This paper provides an overview of the research and offers several conclusions on …

Aada Confers Streptomycin Resistance In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Kristi L. Frank, Sharyl F. Bundle, Michele E. Kresge, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

To enhance genetic manipulation of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, we assayed the aadA gene for the ability to confer resistance to the antibiotics spectinomycin and streptomycin. Using the previously described pBSV2 as a backbone, a shuttle vector, termed pKFSS1, which carries the aadA open reading frame fused to the B. burgdorferi flgB promoter was constructed. The hybrid flgB promoter-aadA cassette confers resistance to spectinomycin and streptomycin in both B. burgdorferi and Escherichia coli. pKFSS1 has a replication origin derived from the 9-kb circular plasmid and can be comaintained in B. burgdorferi with extant shuttle vector pCE320, which has …

Women’S Educational Attainment And Intergenerational Patterns Of Fertility Behaviour In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba Nov 2003

Women’S Educational Attainment And Intergenerational Patterns Of Fertility Behaviour In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba

PSC Discussion Papers Series

There is a strong theoretical and empirical relationship between educational attainment and fertility behaviour. However, a fundamental question that has largely been neglected is the change in this relationship across cohorts resulting from differential improvement in educational opportunities for women over time and how it relates to fertility transition. Utilizing the 1998 DHS data from Kenya this study examines the differential effect of educational attainment on women’s use of modern contraception and desire for cessation of childbearing across generations. The findings indicate that even after controlling for husband’s education and other relevant factors, a woman’s advanced education is positively associated …

Relationship Between Blood Pressure And Stroke Risk In Patients With Symptomatic Carotid Occlusive Disease, P. M. Rothwell, S. C. Howard, J. D. Spence Nov 2003

Relationship Between Blood Pressure And Stroke Risk In Patients With Symptomatic Carotid Occlusive Disease, P. M. Rothwell, S. C. Howard, J. D. Spence

Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose - Blood pressure lowering in patients with a previous transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke reduces the risk of recurrent stroke and coronary vascular events. However, there is uncertainty about the risks and benefits in patients with severe carotid occlusive disease, particularly those with a carotid occlusion or bilateral ≥70% carotid stenosis in whom cerebral perfusion is often impaired and may depend directly on systemic blood pressure. Therefore, we studied the effect of carotid artery disease on the relationship between blood pressure and stroke risk in patients with recent TIA or stroke. Methods - We compared the …

Order Submission: The Choice Between Limit And Market Orders, Ingrid Lo, Stephen G. Sapp Nov 2003

Order Submission: The Choice Between Limit And Market Orders, Ingrid Lo, Stephen G. Sapp

Business Publications

Most financial markets allow investors to submit both limit and market orders but it is not always clear why agents choose one over the other. In this study we empirically investigate how several microstructure factors influence the choice and timing of submitting either limit or market orders using orders submitted to the Reuters 2000-2 system. Specifically we measure how these factors influence the expected time (duration) between successive orders using an autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) model. We find that the order submission process is not symmetric for market and limit orders. For example, we only find the lagged average volume, …

Djungarian Hamsters Exhibit Temperature-Dependent Dietary Fat Choice In Long Days, Sara Hiebert Burch, Kelley Carl Hauser , '99, Abbas Ebrahim , '00 Nov 2003

Djungarian Hamsters Exhibit Temperature-Dependent Dietary Fat Choice In Long Days, Sara Hiebert Burch, Kelley Carl Hauser , '99, Abbas Ebrahim , '00

Biology Faculty Works

Previous studies have shown that whole-animal thermal responses of ectotherms and heterotherms (e.g., hibernators), both of which experience a wide range of body temperatures, are related to the saturation level of somatic lipids, which in turn can be influenced by the ratio of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in the diet. This study demonstrates that Djungarian hamsters held in long days display ambient temperature dependent choice of dietary fats, increasing their preference for saturated fats when ambient temperature increases ( to 27 degreesC) and later reversing this preference when ambient temperature is returned to its original value ( 8 degreesC). …

Incidence And Correlates Of Breast Milk Feeding In Hospitalized Preterm Infants, K. A. Espy, T. E. Senn

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

The majority of epidemiological studies of breast feeding have been conducted in healthy, fullterm infant samples. Little is known about the incidence and correlates of breast milk feeding in preterm infants, particularly in those born outside of metropolitan areas. Therefore, hospital medical charts of 151 consecutively admitted preterm infants (
