Slotting Allowances As A Facilitating Practice By Food Processors In Wholesale Grocery Markets: Profitability And Welfare Effects, Stephen F. Hamilton Nov 2003

Slotting Allowances As A Facilitating Practice By Food Processors In Wholesale Grocery Markets: Profitability And Welfare Effects, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

Slotting allowances, which are lump-sum transfers paid by food manufacturers to grocery retailers in return for various retail concessions, are becoming increasingly common in wholesale grocery markets. This article extends the literature on slotting allowances by considering two features that previously have been ignored: the role of food processors in determining these pricing arrangements, and the effect of slotting allowances on the size and distribution of economic surplus. Slotting allowances motivated by food processors increase procurement quantities and farm prices, and this raises farm surplus, increases total producer surplus, and improves consumer welfare in the food system.

Salinity Patterns: On Row Crops Under Subsurface Drip Irrigation (Sdi) On The Westside Of The San Joaquin Valley Of California, Charles M. Burt, Othman Al-Amoudi, Alejandro Paolini

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

The objectives of this study were to identify if there was detrimental salinity buildup in the upper layers of soil caused by the usage of SDI on row crops, identify the extent of any detrimental salinity buildup, and identify successful and/or essential practices used by farmers who use SDI.

Building A Learning Profession, Lawrence Ingvarson Nov 2003

Building A Learning Profession, Lawrence Ingvarson

Professional learning for teachers and school leaders

This paper is presented in two main sections: an overview of contemporary research on effective professional learning for practising educators, and recommendations for action to promote effective learning for practicing educators. It argues that we need to build capacity for learning, not only at teacher, school and system levels, but also at the level of the profession. Evidence is provided that the profession is ready and able to undertake this task. Policies are needed that will support the profession in building a national framework for continuing learning, from registration to advanced certification, guided by professional standards and assessments, and supported …

Water Quality Sampling, Analysis And Annual Load Determinations For Tss, Nitrogen And Phosphorus At The Wyman Road Bridge On The White River, Marc Nelson, Wade Cash

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A water quality sampling station was installed at the Wyman Road Bridge just below the confluence of the three main forks of the Upper White River in January 2000. This station is coordinated with the USGS gaging station at the same location. This station was instrumented to collect samples at sufficient intervals across the hydrograph to accurately estimate the flux of total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus into the upper end of Beaver Lake from the Upper White River.

Fisheries Research Report No. 146 - Catch Composition Of The Western Australian Temperate Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fisheries, 1994 To 1999, Rory Mcauley, Colin Simpfendorfer Nov 2003

Fisheries Research Report No. 146 - Catch Composition Of The Western Australian Temperate Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fisheries, 1994 To 1999, Rory Mcauley, Colin Simpfendorfer

Fisheries Research Reports

Catch composition data were collected from Western Australia’s temperate demersal gillnet and demersal longline fisheries, between Eucla and Geraldton, over a five-year period from July 1994 to June 1999. Results were compared to Department of Fisheries catch records compiled from fishers’ monthly catch returns. Discarded bycatch of several species was estimated by bootstrapping their observed catch rates. Dusky shark, Carcharhinus obscurus, gummy shark, Mustelus antarcticus, whiskery shark, Furgaleus macki, and Port Jackson shark, Heterodontus portusjacksoni, were identified as the main components of the fisheries’ catch, however, catches were found to vary regionally. School shark, Galeorhinus galeus, dogfish of the family …

Now they can read first-hand his thoughts about the importance of story and what his many years of experience suggest leads to effective storytelling.

Review Of John Muir: My Life With Nature, Rob Andrejewski Nov 2003

Review Of John Muir: My Life With Nature, Rob Andrejewski

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

More than 100 years ago, John Muir began speaking in defense of wilderness, captivating audiences with his unconventional style and complete absorption in the wonder and joy of the land. Though Muir spoke esoterically about transcendent "spirit beams" and the beauty of Yosemite's "range of light," his sincerity and emotion shook something deep within the national consciousness. His books and speaking tours energized the wilderness movement, invigorating supporters of the natural preservation system that would help define the country. Never before or since has the United States, possibly the world, had such a charismatic and enthusiastic champion of the wild …

Effects Of Neurobehavioral Assessment On Feeding And Weight Gain In Preterm Neonates, T. E. Senn, K. A. Espy Nov 2003

Effects Of Neurobehavioral Assessment On Feeding And Weight Gain In Preterm Neonates, T. E. Senn, K. A. Espy

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Neonatal intensive care unit personnel and parents often are concerned that developmental assessment will tire preterm neonates and impair their feeding ability and subsequent weight gain. Therefore, the amount of fluid consumed by 108 preterm neonates (≤36.5 wk gestational age) was compared before and after administration of the Neurobehavioral Assessment of the Preterm Infant (NAPI). In addition, the weight gain of 35 preterm neonates who were administered the NAPI was compared with that of a matched control group of 35 preterm neonates who were not administered the NAPI. There were no differences in the amount of fluid consumed before and …

Shiftgrams Ciphered, Analyzed, Richard Sabey

Word Ways

A list of the shiftwords or shiftgrams in some word stock, classified by the amount of shift, such as Leonard Gordon's "Letter-shift Words in the OSPD" (WW 3.1990-61), shows that some shifts produce more word pairs than others. To get some insight as to why, this article surveys the whole stock of shiftwords and shiftgrams of words of lengths 3-12 from a specified word stock, before going on to analyze words of some specified lengths in further depth.

Straddling The Electronic And Paper Realms—E-Filing: Part Ii, K.K. Duvivier Nov 2003

Straddling The Electronic And Paper Realms—E-Filing: Part Ii, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In August 2003, Colorado took another huge stride toward the electornic age by announcing that it would become the first state to allow free online filing of civil cases for qualifying low-income people. The last "Scrivener" column addressed how the courts' shift to electronic formats may alter the way lawyers and judges read and write legal documents. This column addresses some of the practical aspects of preparing documents that some readers will view on paper and others will view only in electronic format.
