Review Of The Passionate Fact: Storytelling In Natural History And Cultural Interpretation, Charles Yaple Nov 2003

Review Of The Passionate Fact: Storytelling In Natural History And Cultural Interpretation, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The phrase, "a must read" aptly fits this book if one is going to be an interpreter of natural or cultural history, an environmental educator, outdoor educator, or a teacher of any sort. Storytelling is an art, and Susan Strauss has mastered it to the point that she can explain the intricacies of orchestrating a good story. Recognized as one of the finest storytellers in the country, Strauss shows readers how to make ordinary information and scientific facts come alive. Professional performances, during a twenty year career, at institutions such as the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian Museum lend …

Alcohol And Anxiety: Subtle And Obvious Attributes Of Abuse In Adults With Social Anxiety Disorder And Panic Disorder, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope Nov 2003

Alcohol And Anxiety: Subtle And Obvious Attributes Of Abuse In Adults With Social Anxiety Disorder And Panic Disorder, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has found a relation between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism, but recent work found no differences in drinking levels among socially anxious individuals, dysthymics, and normal controls. Using a more sophisticated measure of substance abuse may further explicate the relation between social anxiety and drinking. We examined aspects of substance abuse in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder or panic disorder (psychiatric control group) as well as nondisordered individuals (normal control group). We used the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory–3 because it includes both face valid and subtle items to control for social desirability. Contrary to the hypotheses, …

The Environment Of Education: Identifying Effects Of The Hidden Curriculum On Students' Environmental Perceptions, Values, And Attitudes, Amy Duckert Nov 2003

The Environment Of Education: Identifying Effects Of The Hidden Curriculum On Students' Environmental Perceptions, Values, And Attitudes, Amy Duckert

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Our relationship with our environment is a function of culture and personal experience. Environmental perceptions, values, and attitudes are therefore linked to cultural standards. As Saul (2000) has stated, "Environmental problems result from environmental practices, and environmental practices are cultural activities" (p. 5). The link between environmental issues and cultural practices is clear, but the question of how to change cultural norms is a difficult one. Some environmental theorists claim the environmental movement has not paid enough attention to culture and has therefore failed to address problems at their true cause (Saul, 2000; Bowers, 1997).

Silica Based Solid Phase Extraction Sorbent With A Removable Alkyltrimethylammonium Surfactant Phase, Tony Oakes Nov 2003

Silica Based Solid Phase Extraction Sorbent With A Removable Alkyltrimethylammonium Surfactant Phase, Tony Oakes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Presented is a solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent having a removable "stationary phase." This removable phase that consists of alkyltrimethylammonium surfactant is initially immobilized onto hydrophilic strong cation exchange resin. The surfactant chain through hydrophobic interactions extracts hydrophobic analytes in the same manner as conventional bonded alkyl moieties on silica based non-polar sorbents. For the extraction of very hydrophobic species with conventional sorbents, solvents used for analyte elution are generally toxic and not directly instrument compatible. The chosen solvent must be strong enough to efficiently break hydrophobic interactions between the analyte and sorbent. Using a removable "stationary phase," hydrophobic interactions …

Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion Nov 2003

Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Although Erasmus (1467?-1536) lived in Switzerland for ten years, a longer period of time than in any country except his native Holland, and was, in fact, buried in Basel, scholars have written very little of substance on his lengthy connections with Switzerland and Swiss intellectuals and publishers. This is surprising because links between Erasmus and specific European countries have attracted a great deal of interest from leading Erasmus scholars. In his 1954 book Erasme et l 'Italie, Augustin Renaudet examined the important connections between Erasmus and Italian theologians and philosophers. Not only did Erasmus earn his doctorate in sacred theology …

A Study Of The Factors Related To The Successful Merger Of Information Technology Departments Within Local Government, Angela Patton Nov 2003

A Study Of The Factors Related To The Successful Merger Of Information Technology Departments Within Local Government, Angela Patton

Student Work

This study focuses on the merger process of Information Technology (IT) departments within local government. The research that exists indicates that local government mergers, in general, have a high rate of failure. In addition, the political, managerial, cultural, and behavioral aspects that impact these mergers are ignored. The importance of computers to the departments/agencies housed within local government has made the IT departments a critical part of the local government structure. This study looks at the problems faced by the merging IT departments within local government in order to gain a better understanding of this process and to increase the …

Editor’S Reflections: Peacemaking Among Helping Parties, Honggang Yang Nov 2003

Editor’S Reflections: Peacemaking Among Helping Parties, Honggang Yang

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

I would like to take this opportunity to initiate a dialogue over some issues of conflict management among ourselves as third parties or helping professionals. The challenges of managing interpersonal conflicts or performing internal peacemaking are as real and relevant as the challenges of our professional undertaking in handling “outside” disputes. While recognizing there are no ready formulae to address these challenges, I invite you to join in the open-minded dialogues to examine expectations and premises often assumed among helping professionals in the fields.

The Prospect Of Multi-Level Voting In Post-Peace Accord Northern Ireland, Roger Mac Ginty Nov 2003

The Prospect Of Multi-Level Voting In Post-Peace Accord Northern Ireland, Roger Mac Ginty

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article reviews the possibility of multi-level voting in Northern Ireland in the wake of the 1998 peace accord. Post-peace accord elections can act as powerful indicators of the fate of a peace. Using Reif and Schmitt’s framework of second-order elections, it finds some evidence of varying electoral behaviour according to the electoral arena. The article also uses original data from a major opinion survey to assess public attitudes towards the suite of governing institutions with powers in or over a devolved Northern Ireland. The evidence of multi-level voting is limited and does not extend to electors abandoning ethnic voting …

Early Warning: A Radioactive Rio Grande, Norm Buske, The Radioactivist Campaign (Trac) Nov 2003

Early Warning: A Radioactive Rio Grande, Norm Buske, The Radioactivist Campaign (Trac)

The RadioActivist Campaign

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Risk Reduction and Environmental Stewardship Program monitors contaminants migrating off the 40 square mile, Department of Energy (DOE) site. While LANL has reported contaminated storm water running off the site after the wildfires of 2000, LANL has not reported any nuclear waste leaking into the Rio Grande. In Fall 2002 and Spring 2003, The RadioActivist Campaign (TRAC) joined a research team, collaborating with Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS), to study the LANL bank of the Rio Grande. TRAC checked whether any radioactivity from LANL is already leaking into the Rio Grande at detectable …

Doe Environmental Management Programs In New Mexico: Environmental And Economic Impacts, Nuclear Watch Of New Mexico, Lloyd Jeff Dumas, Bernd Franke, Jay Coghlan, Colin King, Geoff Petrie

Nuclear Watch of New Mexico

In August 2001 Nuclear Watch of New Mexico (NWNM) was funded by the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment (MTA) Fund to conduct an “Assessment of the Environmental and Economic Impacts of Department of Energy Environmental Management Programs in New Mexico.”

New Mexico is home to two of the three nuclear weapons laboratories in the United States, Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. New Mexico also hosts the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the world’s only deep geological disposal site for radioactive transuranic wastes (which are primarily plutonium contaminated wastes resulting from bomb research and production). These three sites were the focus …

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine Nov 2003

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine

Pets Collection

The research on organizational framing and the metaphor of institutional “thinking” highlight the ways that social problems organizations shape the ameliorative services they deliver. Social problems work then perpetuates representations of problems that may not match the conditions clients face. This study extends social problems literature to argue that organizations sometimes “think” differently about the problems they intend to solve than do persons involved with these problems in everyday life. Using ethnographic research and interviews, this article contrasts the way in which animal sheltering, as an institution, frames the problem of unwanted animals with how the public interprets that problem. …

Assessing Animal Welfare At The Farm And Group Level: The Interplay Of Science And Values, D. Fraser Nov 2003

Assessing Animal Welfare At The Farm And Group Level: The Interplay Of Science And Values, D. Fraser

Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection

In the social debate about animal welfare we can identify three different views about how animals should be raised and how their welfare should be judged: (1) the view that animals should be raised under conditions that promote good biological functioning in the sense of health, growth and reproduction, (2) the view that animals should be raised in ways that minimise suffering and promote contentment, and (3) the view that animals should be allowed to lead relatively natural lives. When attempting to assess animal welfare, different scientists select different criteria, reflecting one or more of these value-dependent views. Even when …
