Parametric Modeling Of Tooling: Workpiece Interaction With Engineered Abrasives, Hitesh Kataria Nov 2003

Parametric Modeling Of Tooling: Workpiece Interaction With Engineered Abrasives, Hitesh Kataria

Theses

Abrasive processes are some of the most important operations employed in manufacturing to remove unwanted material and introduce desired geometry and surface finish. However, some of the difficulties encountered when trying to model abrasive process are related to a multi-point of contact tooling composed of extremely hard and brittle particles which geometry, shape and distribution are unknown. With the introduction of engineered abrasives to the market over the past few years, the opportunity to drastically improve the quality and consistency of abrasive machining now exists. One of the main benefits of engineered abrasives is the ability to control the abrasive …

Toward An Integrated Communication Theory For Celebrity Endorsement In Fund Raising, Tracie M. Domino Nov 2003

Toward An Integrated Communication Theory For Celebrity Endorsement In Fund Raising, Tracie M. Domino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the history of the United States, Americans customarily have given away their money, as well as their time to serve the common good. Americans will give "to build something, to fight something, or to save something" (Fink, 1990, p. 136). They make gifts to causes, or the societal problems represented by organizational missions, that are important to them. Individuals give not only to advance a common good, but also to receive private goods, or benefits that are internal, intangible, and in some cases, tangible (Steinberg, 1989).

To create this feeling of reciprocity for prospective donors who have not actually …

Distributed Supervisory Control Of Workflows, Pranav Deshpande Nov 2003

Distributed Supervisory Control Of Workflows, Pranav Deshpande

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The need for redesigning existing business processes to improve their efficiency makes it essential to adequately represent, study, and automate them. The WFMC defines "workflow" as computerized facilitation or automation of a business process in whole or part. It is actually a representation of the given process, which is made up of well-defined collection of activities called tasks.

Modeling and specification of a workflow involves the following steps: 1) Provide formalism for modeling and specification of workflow 2) specify the tasks together with the associated information and 3) enter the applicable business rules in form of inter-task dependencies.

Earlier …

A Vlsi Architecture For Rijndael, The Advanced Encryption Standard, Naga M. Kosaraju Nov 2003

A Vlsi Architecture For Rijndael, The Advanced Encryption Standard, Naga M. Kosaraju

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The increasing application of cryptographic algorithms to ensure secure communications across virtual networks has led to an ever-growing demand for high performance hardware implementations of the encryption/decryption methods. The inevitable inclusion of the cryptographic algorithms in network communications has led to the development of several encryption standards, one of the prominent ones among which, is the Rijndael, the Advanced Encryption Standard. Rijndael was chosen as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) by the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), in October 2000, as a replacement for the Data Encryption Standard (DES). This thesis presents the architecture for the VLSI implementation …

Kinematic Analysis And Evaluation Of Wheelchair Mounted Robotic Arms, Edward Jacob Mccaffrey Nov 2003

Kinematic Analysis And Evaluation Of Wheelchair Mounted Robotic Arms, Edward Jacob Mccaffrey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is the kinematic analysis and evaluation of wheelchair mounted robotic arms. More specifically, to address the kinematics of the wheelchair mounted robotic arm (WMRA) with respect to its ability to reach positions commonly required by an assistive device in activities of daily living (ADL).

A robotic manipulator attached to a power wheelchair could enhance the manipulation functions of an individual with a disability. In this thesis, a procedure is developed for the kinematic analysis and evaluation of a wheelchair mounted robotic arm. In addition to developing the analytical procedure, the manipulator is evaluated, and design …

The Fleeting Effects Of Retrieval Cue Attributes In The Pier2 Memory Model, Amie L. Wilbanks Nov 2003

The Fleeting Effects Of Retrieval Cue Attributes In The Pier2 Memory Model, Amie L. Wilbanks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Processing Implicit and Explicit Representations (PIER2) is a model of memory that makes predictions about memory performance based on the interaction of known and newly acquired information by studying how implicitly activated associates affect episodic memory. Nelson and Zhang (2000) found a significant effect of cue connectivity in a multiple regression analysis of the variables known to affect cued recall, but at that time no manipulational experiments had studied the cue connectivity effect in the laboratory. The present paper presents a series of three experiments designed to investigate the effect of cue connectivity in the context of the PIER2 memory …

Simple Models For Predicting Dune Erosion Hazards Along The Outer Banks Of North Carolina, Lauren Mckinnon Wetzell Nov 2003

Simple Models For Predicting Dune Erosion Hazards Along The Outer Banks Of North Carolina, Lauren Mckinnon Wetzell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hurricane hazards result from the combined processes of wind, waves, storm surge, and overwash (Lennon et al., 1996). Predicting the severity of these hazards requires immense effort to quantify the processes and then predict how different coastal regions respond to them. A somewhat simpler, but no less daunting task is to begin to predict the hazards due to potential erosion of barrier islands. A four-part scale has been developed by Sallenger (2000) to provide a framework for understanding how barrier islands might respond during extreme storm events. These four regimes describe how beach and dune elevations interact with surge and …

Benin’S Constitutional Court: An Institutional Model For Enforcing Human Rights, Anna Rotman Nov 2003

Benin’S Constitutional Court: An Institutional Model For Enforcing Human Rights, Anna Rotman

ExpressO

This piece is based on field research the author conducted in Benin, West Africa during January 2003. The paper explores how the Court operates as a hybrid institution, by combining the competences traditionally associated with a constitutional court with the mandate of a national human rights commission. The paper argues that the Beninese Constitutional Court could provide an institutional model for guaranteeing human rights through a state-sponsored institution.

Tomato Dc3000 By Controlling Regulatory Rna, Transcriptional Activators, And Alternate Sigma Factors, Asita Chatterjee, Yaya Cui, Hailian Yang, Alan Collmer, James R. Alfano, Arun K. Chatterjee

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Concerted investigations of factors affecting host-pathogen interactions are now possible with the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and its model pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000, as their whole genome sequences have become available. As a prelude to analysis of the regulatory genes and their targets, we have focused on GacA, the response regulator of a two-component system. The DC3000 gene was cloned by testing for the reversal of phenotypes of an Erwinia GacA– mutant. A GacA– mutant of DC3000 constructed by marker exchange produces much-reduced levels of transcripts of three alternate sigma factors: HrpL, required for the production of effector …
