Was Arthur Andersen Different?: An Empirical Examination Of Major Accounting Firms' Audits Of Large Clients, Theodore Eisenberg, Jonathan R. Macey
Was Arthur Andersen Different?: An Empirical Examination Of Major Accounting Firms' Audits Of Large Clients, Theodore Eisenberg, Jonathan R. Macey
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
Enron and other corporate financial scandals focused attention on the accounting industry in general and on Arthur Andersen in particular. Part of the policy response to Enron, the criminal prosecution of Andersen, eliminated one of the few major audit firms capable of auditing many large, public corporations. This article explores whether Andersen’s performance, as measured by frequency of financial restatements, measurably differed from that of other large auditors. Financial restatements trigger significant negative market reactions and their frequency can be viewed as a measure of accounting performance. We analyze the financial restatement activity of approximately 1,000 large, public firms from …
3d Molecular Structures: Patentable Subject Matter Under 35 U.S.C. §101?, Ben Quarmby
3d Molecular Structures: Patentable Subject Matter Under 35 U.S.C. §101?, Ben Quarmby
Duke Law & Technology Review
With the advent of protein engineering, the determination of a protein’s 3D structure has taken on a whole new importance. This has prompted some to call for the United States Patent and Trademark Office [USPTO] to break with tradition and allow patents on the three-dimensional structural information of proteins. This iBrief will discuss whether such information would constitute patentable subject matter under 35 U.S.C. §101, and how much protection patents on this information could actually confer.

Pipeline Task Scheduling On Network Processors, Mark A. Franklin, Seema Data
Pipeline Task Scheduling On Network Processors, Mark A. Franklin, Seema Data
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Chip Multi-Processors (CMPs) are now available in a variety of systems and provide the opportunity for achieving high computational performance by exploiting application-level parallelism. In the communications environment, network processors (NPs), designed around CMP architectures, are generally usable in a pipelined manner. This leads to the issue of scheduling tasks on processor pipelines. This paper considers problems associated with determining optimal schedules for such pipelines. A system and algorithm called Greedy Pipe is presented. The algorithm employs a greedy heuristic to schedule tasks derived from multiple application flows on pipelines with an arbitrary number of stages. Tasks may be shared, …

Infrastructure For Performance Tuning Mpi Applications, Kathryn Marie Mohror
Infrastructure For Performance Tuning Mpi Applications, Kathryn Marie Mohror
Dissertations and Theses
Clusters of workstations are becoming increasingly popular as a low-budget alternative for supercomputing power. In these systems, message-passing is often used to allow the separate nodes to act as a single computing machine. Programmers of such systems face a daunting challenge in understanding the performance bottlenecks of their applications. This is largely due to the vast amount of performance data that is collected, and the time and expertise necessary to use traditional parallel performance tools to analyze that data.
The goal of this project is to increase the level of performance tool support for message-passing application programmers on clusters of …

Details of this accident have been withheld by the demining NGO that employed the Victim. A spreadsheet including the Victim’s name and very brief details of the accident was made available in 2007. Some details can be inferred from the information released. For example, the fact that there were three Victims implies that safety distances were not being enforced.

Using The Ablls With English Language Learners: Implications For Students And Teachers, Lorie G. Schultz
Using The Ablls With English Language Learners: Implications For Students And Teachers, Lorie G. Schultz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
English language learners are traditionally behind in academics such as reading, math and science. Hispanics, who make up the vast majority of English language learners, tend to not enroll in pre-school or higher education, have higher dropout rates and as adults earn less than whites. Common instructional strategies used in public schools are not meeting the needs of these students. The field of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) has typically offered a wide variety of poorly defined teaching strategies that are not based on empirical research. Within public schools, assessment tends to serve the purpose of …
