Modularity And The Product Lifecycle, Peter Cebon, Oscar Hauptman, Chander Shekhar Dec 2003

Modularity And The Product Lifecycle, Peter Cebon, Oscar Hauptman, Chander Shekhar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Product lifecycle theory, which underlies theories of technical innovation in economics, strategy, marketing, and operations management, is based implicitly on the assumption that products are integrated wholes. The modularization of products undermines the specific synergies which drive the product lifecycle, and this undermining has impacts spanning from the structure of individual organizations to the structure of economies and the definition of industries.

The Perceived Value Of Certification By Certified Perioperative Nurses, Kathleen B. Gaberson, Kathryn Schroeter, Aileen R. Killen, Wendelny A. Valentine

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

We conducted this study to determine the perceived value of certification in perioperative nursing. Following development and pilot-testing, we mailed the 18-item Likert-type instrument, the Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT), to a sample of 2750 perioperative nurses who had earned the CNOR or CRNFA credential or both. A total of 1398 surveys were returned (50.8% response rate). Factor analysis extracted three factors, accounting for 61% of the variance: personal value, recognition by others, and professional practice. Internal consistency reliability testing (Cronbach's α) identified a standardized α of .924. Over 90% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with statements about …

Dietary Feedback Effects And Gender Differences In Stages Of Change For Fat And Fiber Intake Behavior, Janis M. Boury Dec 2003

Dietary Feedback Effects And Gender Differences In Stages Of Change For Fat And Fiber Intake Behavior, Janis M. Boury

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The stages of change (SOC) model has addressed changes people make to important habits such as smoking or diet. This study had three purposes (a) examining the influence of cultural role expectations for males and females on decisional balance (DB), (b) examining changes in stage assignment following feedback for the hidden nutrients of fat and fiber, (c) comparing the effects of feedback and tailored messages on change in fat and fiber intakes.;This study was an experimental control group design with 273 participants at baseline, 235 at intervention, and 197 at post-intervention. Most participants had some college. Baseline included general and …

Development And Validation Of A Measure To Assess Physician Readiness To Prescribe Drug Therapies For Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients, Siddhesh Ajit Kamat Dec 2003

Development And Validation Of A Measure To Assess Physician Readiness To Prescribe Drug Therapies For Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients, Siddhesh Ajit Kamat

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

National guidelines recommend the use of beta-blockers, aspirin, and ACE-inhibitors in the management of post MI patients. These target drug classes continue to be under-prescribed; information on physicians' decision-making process requires attention and behavior change interventions have been proposed. This pilot study uses the Transtheoretical Model of Change; physicians' salience for the pros and cons of prescribing target drug classes constitutes the decisional balance measure, which can be used to predict their stage of readiness. A survey instrument was mailed to a sample of West Virginia physicians and 55 usable responses (34%) were received. Majority of the physicians self-reported in …

Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Movement And Habitat Use In A Headwater Stream Of The Central Appalachian Mountains Of West Virginia, Marisa Nel Logan Dec 2003

Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Movement And Habitat Use In A Headwater Stream Of The Central Appalachian Mountains Of West Virginia, Marisa Nel Logan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are the only salmonid native to the Appalachians. They are a resilient species, populating small, low productive streams. Although such streams have historically been abundant in the Appalachians, brook trout populations have been threatened due to habitat degradation such as logging and acidification of waters. The objective of this study was to evaluate brook trout habitat use, home range, and movement patterns in an Appalachian headwater stream during spring and more specifically high flow events. I implanted brook trout with radio tags and tracked their movement for approximately 30 days during late spring 2002 and early …

Kill A Brand, Keep A Customer, Nirmalya Kumar Dec 2003

Kill A Brand, Keep A Customer, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Kill a Brand, Keep a CustomerMost brands don't make much money. Year after year, businesses generate 80% to 90% of their profits from less than 20% of their brands. Yet most companies tend to ignore loss-making brands, unaware of the hidden costs they incur. That's because executives believe it's easy to erase a brand; they have only to stop investing in it, they assume, and it will die a natural death. But they're wrong. When companies drop brands clumsily, they antagonize loyal customers: Research shows that seven times out of eight, when firms merge two brands, the market share of the …

Performance Of High And Low Book-To-Market Stocks With Strong Financial Signals: Evidence In Asia Markets 1991-2002, Choong Seok Joseph Kang, Kuan Yong David Ding Dec 2003

Performance Of High And Low Book-To-Market Stocks With Strong Financial Signals: Evidence In Asia Markets 1991-2002, Choong Seok Joseph Kang, Kuan Yong David Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Motivated by striking findings in recent US studies on return enhancing role in financial signals, we examine in the context of Asian stock markets if we can improve one- and two-year returns of high and low book-to-market (BTM) portfolios by retaining in the portfolios only the stocks whose current accounting/financial information indicates strong financial performance in the prior year. We find that doing so can substantially improve the future returns of such portfolios in all markets except Malaysia. We also find that a zero-investment winner-loser strategy on high BTM stocks (a strategy of longing the value stocks with strong financial …

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter Dec 2003

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter

San Diego Law Review

Courts should develop theory and practice of damages for incompensable losses based on the response of reasonable people to daily risks. Specifically, courts should compute damages based on the reasonable person's point of indifference between less risk and more expenditure on precaution. The Hand rule describes this point of indifference.

Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal Dec 2003

Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal

San Diego Law Review

Compensating for harms is the bedrock of the practice of tort law. The hypothetical ideal of "making the victim whole" guides many a classroom discussion and judicial opinion. Yet we all know that his ideal is often unattainable for a variety of practical and conceptual reasons. Focusing on the conceptual issues, a question might be asked: Are we ever Really able to make the victim whole? In this Article, I aim to stress and develop the aspects of the argument I find most convincing, while critiquing others.

For What Must We Pay? Causation And Counterfactual Baselines, Michael Moore Dec 2003

For What Must We Pay? Causation And Counterfactual Baselines, Michael Moore

San Diego Law Review

It is often thought that the hard core of our moral obligations - the social minimum, so to speak - is that we do no harm. Regardless of what may be virtuous, supererogatory, or obligatory in making the world a better place, at a minimum we should not make it a worse one. Further, we make the world a worse place whenever we worsen it compared to the way the world would have been without our actions. On this view, our actions must make a difference for us to violate our basic obligations. What gets recorded in our moral ledgers …

Rethinking Injury And Proximate Cause, John C.P. Goldberg Dec 2003

Rethinking Injury And Proximate Cause, John C.P. Goldberg

San Diego Law Review

Injury and proximate cause form two components of a plaintiff's prima facie negligence case. Although equals in this sense, they have received starkly different treatment at the hands of judges and scholars. Proximate cause has long attracted attention, yet has also managed to defy repeated efforts at characterization and explanation. Injury by contrast, seems to have been largely ignored. One of the many virtues of professor Perry's paper is that it prompts reconsideration of this disparate treatment from both ends. By offering a subtle and rich account of the related concept of "harm," Perry permits us to see that the …

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm Dec 2003

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm

San Diego Law Review

The first problem that we shall examine is raised by the cases in which by our tortious wrong act someone is either (1) made no worse off than he would have been because the injury is one he would have suffered anyway by another means or (2) made better off because, though the act produces an injury, it benefits him by interfering with an upcoming greater injury. Should we assign liability based on the fact that an injury was caused relative to how the person was in his prior uninjured state (namely, the causal approach)? Or, should we take account …

Compensation And Revenge, Emily Sherwin Dec 2003

Compensation And Revenge, Emily Sherwin

San Diego Law Review

Compensation is one of the least controversial goals of law; compensating for harms is assumed to be both efficient and morally praiseworthy. I shall argue that the moral component of this assumption needs refinement. Some of the features of legal remedies that pass as compensatory suggest that pursuit of compensation is not entirely virtuous.

Compensation: Justice Or Revenge?, Kenneth W. Simons Dec 2003

Compensation: Justice Or Revenge?, Kenneth W. Simons

San Diego Law Review

This Article will suggest that nonconsequentialist accounts of tort doctrine have much more explanatory power than she suggests and that the supposed fact that many tort victims act from vengeful motives has less. At the same time, her revenge interpretation does have value in illuminating some aspects of tort doctrine.

Measuring Attraction To Organizations, Scott Highhouse, Filip Lievens, Evan F. Sinar Dec 2003

Measuring Attraction To Organizations, Scott Highhouse, Filip Lievens, Evan F. Sinar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational attraction measures are commonly used as surrogate assessments of organizational pursuit. Despite the range in content often encompassed by such instruments, no research has systematically examined the assumptions underlying their use. The authors address this issue by empirically distinguishing items assessing attractiveness, prestige, and behavioral intentions and by modeling their effects on organization pursuit. Undergraduates (N = 305) were randomly assigned to recruitment literature from one of five well-known companies and were asked to respond to a series of items commonly used in past research. Analyses of the item responses suggested that three components of organizational attraction can be …

Fiducial Predictive Densities And Econometric Duration Analysis, Zhenlin Yang Dec 2003

Fiducial Predictive Densities And Econometric Duration Analysis, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this article, we propose using fiducial predictive density (FPD) as a density estimate, which leads naturally to estimators of survivor and hazard functions and provides a simple way of constructing shortest prediction intervals. This approach is studied in detail in the context of two flexible duration models proposed in this paper, namely the trans-normal and trans-exponential families, by presenting the FPDs, their basic properties, their Bayesian correspondence and their applications in econometric duration analysis. Empirical evidences show that the FPD method provides better estimates of survivor and hazard functions, particularly the latter, than does the usual maximum likelihood method. …

Xstamps: A Multiversion Timestamps Concurrency Control Protocol For Xml Data, Khin-Myo Win, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the tremendous growth of XML data over the Web, efficient management of such data becomes a new challenge for database community. Several data management solutions, proposed in recent years, extend the capability of traditional database systems to meet the needs of XML data while alternative approaches introduce new generation databases, named as native XML database management systems. Although traditional databases have mature transaction management and concurrency control techniques, there is still a need to tailor techniques for native XML databases in order to deal with distinct characteristics of XML. In this paper, we propose XStamps, a multiversion timestamps concurrency …

Structuring Lecture Videos For Distance Learning Applications, Chong-Wah Ngo, Feng Wang, Ting-Chuen Pong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents an automatic and novel approach in structuring and indexing lecture videos for distance learning applications. By structuring video content, we can support both topic indexing and semantic querying of multimedia documents. In this paper, our aim is to link the discussion topics extracted from the electronic slides with their associated video and audio segments. Two major techniques in our proposed approach include video text analysis and speech recognition. Initially, a video is partitioned into shots based on slide transitions. For each shot, the embedded video texts are detected, reconstructed and segmented as high-resolution foreground texts for commercial …

How Are Social Identities Linked To Self-Conception And Intergroup Orientation? The Moderating Effect Of Implicit Theories, Ying-Yi Hong, Gloria Chan, Chi-Yue Chiu, Rosanna Y. M. Wong, Ian G. Hansen, Sau-Lai Lee, Jennifer Yuk-Yue Tong, Ho-Ying Fu Dec 2003

How Are Social Identities Linked To Self-Conception And Intergroup Orientation? The Moderating Effect Of Implicit Theories, Ying-Yi Hong, Gloria Chan, Chi-Yue Chiu, Rosanna Y. M. Wong, Ian G. Hansen, Sau-Lai Lee, Jennifer Yuk-Yue Tong, Ho-Ying Fu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social identity approaches assume that social identification affects both self-conception and intergroup orientation. The authors contend that such social identification effects are accentuated when people hold a fixed view of human character and attribute immutable dispositions to social groups. To these individuals, social identities are immutable, concrete entities capable of guiding self-conception and intergroup orientation. Social identification effects are attenuated when people hold a malleable view of human character and thus do not view social identities as fixed, concrete entities. The authors tested and found support for this contention in three studies that were conducted in the context of the …

Predicting Nonlinear Network Traffic Using Fuzzy Neural Network, Zhaoxia Wang, Tingzhu Hao, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan Dec 2003

Predicting Nonlinear Network Traffic Using Fuzzy Neural Network, Zhaoxia Wang, Tingzhu Hao, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Network traffic is a complex and nonlinear process, which is significantly affected by immeasurable parameters and variables. This paper addresses the use of the five-layer fuzzy neural network (FNN) for predicting the nonlinear network traffic. The structure of this system is introduced in detail. Through training the FNN using back-propagation algorithm with inertia] terms the traffic series can be well predicted by this FNN system. We analyze the performance of the FNN in terms of prediction ability as compared with solely neural network. The simulation demonstrates that the proposed FNN is superior to the solely neural network systems. In addition, …
