John Fox, Jr. provides commentary on the changing roles of Progressive Era women in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, “A Cumberland Vendetta,” and “The Pardon of Becky Day.” Fox’s portrayals provide evidence that although he recognized the changes in his society with women spearheading reform, he did not entirely approve of these changes or of women taking an aggressive role in advocating change.

Horizontally mounted compressors offer the advantage of reduced height in central air-conditioning units but prove difficult to produce economically due to costs associated with the manufacture of acceptable lubrication systems for the compressors. This study develops an effective, affordable oil pump for use on a horizontal compressor. Concepts are proven through testing of prototype assemblies. Test results drive modifications for future prototypes, and prototypes demonstrating adequate performance are modified for ease of manufacture.

The Saltville Waste Disposal Site is a National Priority List site used during the 77- year operation (1895–1972) of an electrolytic chlorine and caustic soda plant. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine disease prevalence among Saltville Medical Center (SMC) patients. Diseases associated with chronic exposures to mercury, arsenic, and lead were reviewed in patient records and these data were analyzed. Ratios of illness observed at the SMC were compared to health studies of similar environmental exposures and disease prevalence among residents of neighboring communities. Prevalence ratios were calculated for residents and non-residents of Saltville who were SMC patients. Saltville …

The authors assess the future of the Australian-U.S. security relationship within the context of the Canberra's transformation and strategic shift. They conclude that this relationship will remain important and will be strengthened in some ways--interdependence will be central to Australian strategy--but they consider the building of large-scale American military bases in Australia unlikely. The challenge, they note, will be sustaining political support within Australian for this type of relationship.

The author examines three features of the war on terrorism as currently defined and conducted: (1) the administration's postulation of the terrorist threat, (2) the scope and feasibility of U.S. war aims, and (3) the war's political, fiscal, and military sustainability. He believes that the war on terrorism--as opposed to the campaign against al-Qaeda--lacks strategic clarity, embraces unrealistic objectives, and may not be sustainable over the long haul. He calls for downsizing the scope of the war on terrorism to reflect concrete U.S. security interests and the limits of American military power.

Choice and no-choice studies were conducted to determine the categories (antibiosis, antixenosis, and tolerance) of resistance of four buffalograsses (NE91-118, ‘Bonnie Brae’, ‘Cody’, and ‘Tatanka’) previously identified as resistant to the western chinch bug, Blissus occiduus Barber. Antibiosis studies found no significant differences in western chinch bug fecundity, nymphal development, or survival among the resistant and susceptible buffalograsses. Tolerance studies indicated that NE91-118, Cody, and Tatanka exhibited moderate-to-high levels of tolerance based on western chinch bug damage ratings and plant height, whereas Bonnie Brae exhibited moderate-to-low levels of tolerance. A method is presented for animating herds of animals that can follow terrain while being efficient enough to run in real-time. This method involves making simple modifications to Reynolds’ agent-based flocking algorithm. The modifications use only local properties of the terrain, and thus have low complexity. This method focuses on using terrain that can be described as an elevation grid, but it may be extendible to arbitrary terrain. The flocking algorithm with these modifications produces naturally behaving herds that follow the terrain. They will swerve around hills and attempt to follow paths that reduce energy expenditure. A consistent correlation between elevated esterase activity and methyl parathion resistance among Nebraska western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, populations has previously been documented. Characterization of general esterase activity using naphtholic esters as model substrates indicated that differences between resistant and susceptible strains could be maximized by optimizing assay conditions. The optimal conditions identified here were similar to those reported for other insect species. The majority of general esterase activity was found in the cytosolic fractions of resistant populations, whereas the activity was more evenly distributed between cytosolic and mitochondrial/nuclear fractions in the susceptible population. Field and laboratory studies were conducted in 2000 and 2001 to determine the feasibility of mass marking western corn rootworm adults, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, with RbCl in the field. Results showed that application of rubidium (Rb) in solution to both the soil (1 g Rb/plant) and whorl (1 g Rb/plant) of corn plants was optimal for labeling western corn rootworm adults during larval development. Development of larvae on Rb-enriched corn with this technique did not significantly influence adult dry weight or survival. Rb was also highly mobile in the plant. Selenium is implicated in many diseases, including cancer, but its function at the molecular level is poorly understood. BthD is one of three selenoproteins recently identified in Drosophila. To elucidate the function of BthD and the role of selenoproteins in cellular metabolism and health, we analyzed the developmental expression profile of this protein and used inducible RNA interference (RNAi) to ablate function. We find that BthD is dynamically expressed during Drosophila development. bthD mRNA and protein are abundant in the ovaries of female flies and are deposited into the developing oocyte. Prediction of host plant range and ecological impact of exotic phytophagous insects, such as insects for classical biological control of weeds, represents a major challenge. Recently, the flowerhead weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus Fröl.), introduced from Europe into North America to control exotic thistles (Carduus spp.), has become invasive. It feeds heavily on some, but not all species of native North American thistles (Cirsium spp.). This is a detailed study of the technique of cystolithotomy as practiced by the Muslim surgeon Alzahrawi (Albucasis) in Cordova more than 1000 years ago. In addition to translating the relevant chapter in his book Al-Tasreef, his technique is critically evaluated comparing it with that of his predecessors and his successors. The study confirmed the originality of Alzahrawi who described operative steps and invented operative instruments not known in the Greco-Roman era. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization in our institution. METHODS: A 5-day period prevalence study of all adult and pediatric patients. Excluded areas were the adult intensive care unit (screened on admission and weekly thereafter), the outpatient hemodialysis population (screened monthly), and newborns. Our facility is a referral/teaching hospital for the National Guard population and their dependants in Western Saudi Arabia. A total of 240 patients were screened. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical presentation of patients with benign adnexal tumors who had surgical management and the histopathological types of the tumors. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected on 110 patients who underwent surgery for benign adnexal tumor from January 1999 through to April 2002, in Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Sultanate of Oman. The histopathological types of the tumors were also studied. RESULTS: Abdominal pain was the commonest presenting symptom in 65% of the patients followed by abnormalities of vaginal bleeding. OBJECTIVE: Based on 11 months of prospective surveillance in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Abha General Hospital, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, The association of neonatal morbidity and mortality with different risk factors were studied for prediction of different factors of mortality. METHODS: All neonates admitted to the ICU during the period of study; April 2002 through to February 2003 were included. They were followed until discharge or death. RESULTS: Of the 277 infants admitted, 62 died (22.4%). The 3 common illnesses were prematurity with respiratory problems (31%), respiratory distress syndrome (27%) and perinatal asphyxia (7.6%). We report a case pf pseudomembranous colitis that developed in a patient with tuberculous abdominal lymphadenopathy during treatment with rifampicin. The patient had delayed presentation (3 months) after the start of rifampicin. She had one relapse after 2 months that was successfully treated, and she finished her antituberculosis therapy without any further relapses. Awareness of this serious complication of rifampicin therapy should be encountered.

This paper reports a 14-year-old male patient who developed necrotizing fasciitis of the leg after a minor trauma. He was admitted to our intensive care unit with septic shock and acute lung injury. The clinical course was complicated by bilateral multiple pneumoceles resulting in bilateral pneumothoraces. The causative organism was found to be Staphylococcus aureus. This young patient survived and was discharged home in fair general condition.

A perimenopausal patient presented with a history of irregular vaginal bleeding. Clinical examination revealed lower abdominal mass, and the pre operative diagnosis was an ovarian cyst. At laparotomy the ovaries and tubes were normal, and the cyst was anatomically attached to the uterus with a short pedicle. There was no obvious sign of malignancy at laparotomy. The histopathology of the cyst was a benign Mullerian type cyst. Bilateral tubal ligation performed at the same time revealed normal fallopian tubes.
