We show that the graded algebra of elliptic modular forms and their conjugates comprises a uniformly dense subspace of the space of all continuous functions on the compactification of the fundamental domain for the action of SL₂(Z) on the complex upper half-plane by fractional linear transformations.

Which Is The Fairest One Of All? A Positive Analysis Of Justice Theories, James Konow

Economics Faculty Works

This paper evaluates numerous positive and normative theories of justice in positive terms, i.e., in terms of how accurately they describe the impartial fairness preferences of real people. In addition, the paper proposes and defends an integrated justice theory based on preferences over four distinct and sometimes conflicting forces. These forces frame the analysis of the individual theories and inspire four corresponding theoretical classes: equality and need, utilitarianism and welfare economics, equity and desert, and context. This synthesis enables one to treat justice rigorously and to reconcile results that often appear contradictory or at odds with alternative theories.

It was recently shown possible to solve single item auctions without revealing any secret except for the solution. Namely, with vMB-share [4], the seller and the buyer only learn each other's identity and the selling price for a chosen M+1 pricing scheme. No trusted party was necessary. In this thesis, we show how vMB-share can be extended for the clearing of combinatorial negotiations with several items, buyers and sellers. We first show how the more general problem can be reduced to a virtual form, relatively similar to the single-item auctions. The main objective of the thesis is to develop a knowledge base for the design of asphalt concrete mixtures suiting various types and causes of pavement distress and to develop supporting guidelines for the selection of aggregate types, gradation and binder contents for desirable mixture properties.

To achieve this objective, a two-level model was developed. The upper-level is a Factorial Experimental Design Model (FEDM) for the pavement condition evaluation. It can be used as a prediction tool to estimate the Pavement Condition Index (PCI), and determine the percentages of the types of distresses (Load, Environmental, Others). The alignment of e-business academic programs with the e-business market is examined using a fit-gap analysis. Two high-end business schools, ranked independently by US News and Business Week, were chosen as sample. A total of 391 different e-commerce courses were identified, which were classified into 24 categories. Out of these, there are two broad and distinct tracks in e-business curricula, with one track paving the way for an e-business career with a prevailing focus on the business aspect and the other track leading to a career focusing on technology and Web-based systems development. Recent scholarship on regulatory oversight has focused on cost-benefit analysis of perscriptive regulations-regulations that restrict behavior such as pollution-and their use to cure market failures, and has overlooked the vast number of transfer regulations. Transfer regulations are regulations that channel funds to beneficiaries. These regulations are authorized by statutes that establish entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, pay one-time distributions to victims of misfortunes such as natural disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attack, and fund pork barrel spending. Cost-benefit analysis cannot be used to evaluate transfer regulations because all transfer regulations fail cost-benefit analysis; cost-effectiveness analysis, however, can be …

In the spring of 1998, the recently acquired U.N.O. Studio Center was not being fully utilized. Aware of this situation, film director Francis James was contacted by Steve Hank, an instructor in the Department of Drama and Communication (DRCM) at the University of New Orleans, about a possible partnership with his independent production of Tony Bravo: Scenes From a Forgotten Cinema. I was an intern with the Foundation from January 2003 to October 2003. During this period, I assisted with the preparation and presentation of three major events produced by the Foundation: the Tribute to the Classical Arts, the Big Easy Entertainment Awards, and Reds, Whites, and the Blues. I also observed the organization's inner workings. Included in this report, is the documentation and the contributions of my internship, and the history, programs, organizational management structure, and challenges faced by the Foundation. This report concludes with comprehensive list of suggestions for the Foundation.

The features and progress of Picker Engineering Program at Smith College are discussed. This program is the first undergraduate program leading to a degree in engineering at a women's liberal arts college. The program's goal is to educate engineers who are adaptable to the rapidly changing demands of society. The strategies which focus on productive ways of processing information, ways that involve the sort of intentions and conciousness necessary for meaningful learning are also discussed.

Effect Of Background Synaptic Activity On Excitatory-Postsynaptic Potential-Spike Coupling, Veronika Zsiros

Neurons receive large amount of synaptic inputs in vivo, which may impact the coupling between EPSPs and spikes. We mimicked the in vivo synaptic activity of the cell with the dynamic clamp system. We recorded from pyramidal cells in neocortical slices in vitro to investigate how timing and probability of spike generation in response to an EPSP is affected by background synaptic conductance under these conditions. We found that near threshold, background synaptic conductance improved the precision of spike timing by reducing the depolarization-related prolongation of the EPSP. The purpose of this study was to determine hospital executive management’s perceptions of how turbulence in the politico-legal sector of the macroenvironment impacted the strategic management systems of Tennessee hospitals. In particular, how did Federal and State funding restrictions (Medicare and TennCare) impact the strategic planning and implementation process of their hospitals? The study was also designed to gain insight regarding specific changes to strategic management systems that may have resulted from these funding restrictions.
